From Paralyzing Back Injury to Running a Half Marathon in Four Months

I just posted the following to the CBT Student Hub, where members can ask questions and share experience with the program. Hi Friends, I wrote a lot in the beginning, then fell out of the habit, and now here I am in my final week of the program. Just an update and status report. The timing is very good to complete the first pass, because just yesterday I experienced what was a miracle for me. Four months ago I had to cancel participation in my first attempted half marathon run. I had trained too hard in too short a time, had a solid history of anterior pelvic tilt (which I always thought was normal), and a horrible record of no core strengthening or stretching. Running and beach muscle had gotten all the attention. This I believe added up to a lumbar disk herniation and branch nerve pinch that left me unable to stand or lay flat for more than 1 minute or so. More or less paralyzed for a solid month. It really took most of that month for the diagnosis, then I got some steroidal relief, the herniation began to self rectify, and I began Core Balance Training to correct all the things that weren't there to support my normal training. The way I initially felt, I fully expected a whole year to go by before running again, or as many suggested, that at age 66, my running days were over. Well, about a month into CBT, two months after injury, I took my first light steps on a treadmill. And yesterday, I completed my first ever half marathon with a time of 2:03:27. For my age, that is a reasonable time for a full length, 12 or more weeks, of hard optimal training. So really, this seems amazing to me, and I wish all here similar good healing fortune. I can't give CBT full credit for the body's wonderful ability to heal itself. But I am convinced that from the first week, CBT put my spine into an environment where it could heal itself the fastest, and withstand training forces which would otherwise slow or reverse that healing. I enthusiastically look forward to repeating the program at least once. I will appreciate the elementary details more, having experienced the entire program, and I definitely still have spots to focus on where I have significant difficulty. Will try to stay in touch better too! - Doug

CBT program taught me what I couldn’t possibly imagine was missing for regaining my health.

Following the CBT program exceeds - in quality and in outcomes - all the other efforts I have made in the last two years to overcome my sciatic-like issues. I had no real back pain but crippling stiffness— coupled with insanely painful thigh muscle contractions that made life impossible to manage by any standards. I've had two years of sleep-deprived nights, awakening every hour (sometimes even more often) with excruciating cramping pain. Straightening out my legs took 20 minutes when I got out of bed and also every time I sat down for more than 15 minutes. I daresay the idea of dying (I am 67) seemed to pull at me during the darkest hours of this 2 year ordeal... MRI's showed bursitis and tendonitis in the groin area plus severe stenosis at L-3, L-4 but not severe enough for any neurologist (I saw 4) to suggest a laminectomy or any back surgery, at least not before trying everything else... which I did. I tried Chriropractic, Orthobionomy, Feldencrais, Kineseology, acupuncture, PT, including one specialized in pelvic floor issues — The results were always two steps forward, followed by one and and 9/10th steps back! The more I improved, the worse the immediate relapse and increase in pain. My legs were so sensitive they often responded to touch with spasms. I was at my wits end. Within the first four days of the CBT’s free trial period (I was desperate, trying anything and everything that showed promise) I could barely assume the beginner floor positions without going into leg cramps. But I did feel subtle improvements and was reminded to « slow down » not try harder. Now I'm on week four and, unbelievably, getting my life back again. My pain levels are down by 70% and I can sleep three hours (instead of barely one) without awakening in pain. My cramps are completely gone and my recovery from stiffness after sitting or sleeping takes two or three minutes to shake off, instead of 20. Core Balancing hit the nail on the head for me. It’s the 10% effort rule that saved me, again and again. I finally understood that it was not about "muscling through" but about developing a clear awareness of how I am using my muscles, and which ones, specifically. How had I gotten so out of balance in the first place? Walking in an unnatural fashion to compensate for an arthritic hip that finally got fixed ten years too late! I am now back to a nearly normal life where I no longer feel exhausted because of constant pain. I have full, long days without running out of energy. I am getting things done and feel inspired again by the good things life has to offer. This CBT has been a game changer for me. I am doing everything to let everyone know how absolutely spot on this program is for anyone experiencing ANY back-related symptoms. What is so fundamental to know is how it’s balanced muscle tone that keeps the spine in place and able to heal, not the other way around! To resolve my « pinched nerve » I had to use my muscles in a way that would bring support (and the chance to heal) to my spine! What a concept completely upside down from anything I had ever heard from conventional medicine. The analogy of how a tent stays up- coupled with knowing how each body movement and every posture is regulated by two equal and opposing sets of muscles —the tent strings—was really pivotal for an understanding of what my body needed to get back its healthy core balance. It doesn’t really serve much to explain it—the CBT program made me experience it, to become viscerally aware of it, so that the constant awareness would eventually become pure habit, maintained without thinking… Surgery is completely off the table for me now. I’ve even cancelled the second steroid injection I had scheduled for my spine because my pain levels are manageable and informing me of my actual progress! I'm finally 'out of the woods,' and back amongst the living (and the dancing!!!) I am walking without a cane but with a slight limp, and pretty much back to a normal schedule of my former daily activities. I am even coming out of retirement and returning to work— so strongly has my healthy energy returned! I had nearly given up, believing I might be doomed to a permanently handicapped life full of chronic suffering. Bless Dr Peebles for his groundbreaking, simple, and gentle approach, for his amazing customer support team, and for all the rich coaching offered on the platform with additional written and live Q & A forums online. I got hope back, and sufficient health for a rich and productive life for years to come- God willing!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

I am actually sad and greatful that today is my last day of the core balance training program. I cannot recommend it enough. I am a massage therapist and have taken yoga teacher training and still I did not have the awareness around my low back that Dr Ryan has instilled. My back was hurting so bad because I was not engaging my deep core, I had a sway back that I did not realize was getting worse and worse. Until one day I could almost no longer walk. Now 3 months after that I feel like a new person. I was disappointed by the chiropractor and didn’t think that was helping me much and was costing me too much. I would get massage and that would help some but I still didn’t understand how I needed to use my body in order to secure my low back and not create pain. Now for the rest of my life I know how to do just that. Thank you Dr. Ryan, you have put together something truly wonderful and worth every dollar. I would not hesitate to buy / take part in this course again and again.

I am very glad that I participated in the CBT program and owe a great big thank you to Dr. Ryan for his commitment to helping people with back pain. I started the program in May 2022 and since then have learned so much about the structure of the body especially in relation to posture and how to function daily with low back pain. The program is very well structured and easy to follow on a daily basis. Since doing the program I am back to doing my 2+ mile walks four times a week and enjoying playtime with my grandkids. My commitment is to spend twenty minutes four to five times a week doing the exercises which have helped me to strengthen my core. It's not a lot of time to give but consistency has definitely given me good results. I do recommend this program to anyone with back pain and am happy I found it.

Highly recommend the Core Balance…

I highly recommend the Core Balance Training Program! I have had a decrease in my back pain since starting the program. Overall, the difference has been small, but that is significant enough for me given I have a form of spinal rheumatoid arthritis, and any improvements are awesome. I loved that the lessons were short enough to listen every morning and felt they were the perfect length. I incorporated it into my morning stretching/meditation routine. I have a very strong core to begin with and pretty good balance, but the lessons in this program helped improve both my body awareness and core balance. I am easily able to incorporate the anchor lessons while walking daily. I truly believe that I the benefits I've experienced will have a lasting effect! Thank you Dr. Ryan for sharing your program!

My name is Marjorie Seeman

My name is Marjorie Seeman, I have suffered from back pain since I was young due to undiagnosed scoliosis. Every workout, all day long even in bed at night I’m in pain! Tried pain clinics I don’t believe in covering up pain with pills, used a very good chiropractor but in the end it wasn’t working! Dr Ryan Peebles popped up on my phone one day maybe two years ago so I didn’t have anything to lose! I invested in his training methods and I felt better but I kind of lost my way and let my training go to the wayside and probably didn’t understand the concepts back then as well as I should have! So back to the chiropractor again and it seemed to help at first but then it didn’t so I contacted Dr Ryan again and I’m redoing and reviewing and making sure I’m doing this for myself because I’m sick of not being out of pain. All day long at work I concentrate on engaging my core breathing into it and my back is feeling better and better! I’m on my feet for eight hours and my back was killing me so bad I started to walk bent over but not anymore! I don’t expect perfection but this time I’m committed to myself and I’m understanding the concepts much better! I feel much better overall and I practice every night! My back feels much better than before and I believe I’m on the path to a better life for myself! So currently October 2022 I am renewing my investment in myself and Dr Ryan’s program! He is kind and he understands back pain because he’s had it and he’s there for you! He gets back with you whenever you need his help!

Core Balance Training was the answer for me

The program of Core Balance Training helped me understand muscle imbalance and how that imbalance is likely the cause of my physical pains in my back. Not only did the program and show me how to alleviate my back pain, but in my particular case, it gave me the confidence that I can relieve my pain independently with some simple exercises combined with breathwork, without seeking additional help from trainers, physical therapists or other treatment (not that other treatments can't be helpful).

I was very hesitant signing up for…

I was very hesitant signing up for another online course - I had tried several others promising to cure my back pain in just a few weeks and definitely did not experience my pain becoming much better in that time frame. What made CBT stand out at first was the absence of flashing headlines, long pages to scroll through that read the manifest of what the course promises; rather, it was a simple video with a very well explained and unique approach to back pain and how to understand it. After signing up, the set up of the course itself is great. You get an email every morning with instructions on certain mindsets and exercises - the daily email is also a great motivator that will keep you from “putting it off till tomorrow”. The simplicity and breakdown of movements that will help you regain core strength and, most importantly, the understanding of your own body and mind, is incredible and unlike any other online course. Within the first few days of staring the course I could feel something connecting - I could feel muscles I hadn’t felt in months. This ultimately gave me a tremendous boost in confidence and made me look forward to waking up to a new email the next morning. The one-on-one coaching with Ryan is priceless. He takes the time and energy to give you a very personal assessment and will have you take videos of you performing the exercises to give you the best feedback possible. His charismatic character and wealth of knowledge is a big motivating factor that really helped me fix my back and stay motivated though out the length of the course. I would recommend this course to anyone with back pain, especially for people who have a busy life and only have a few minutes to spear each day - you literally get up in the morning, spend about ten minutes on the ground, and then go about your life noticing that your back pain has gotten just a bit better than the day before.

It's a Journey!

Hi my name is Birgit Zacher Hanson, and I've had back pain for the past 5 years on a daily basis. Prior to that, I've always had issues with my back. I'm 5’9 tall, used to be an athlete and I used to think that back pain was just part of my day to day. Admittedly, I started too late taking my daily pain seriously and working on it consistently. Over my lifetime though, I've been in chiropractic care. I've been receiving massages. I worked in the last 4 years with several different physical therapists, a pelvic floor therapist, a corrective and muscle activation therapist. I've worked with acupuncture. I even went to Bali to meet with a medicine woman. I really can say, I haven’t left a stone unturned. I've also received some injections as well from the pain management folks. Everything helped a little bit, but when I found Dr. Peebles’ program, it has made the MOST fundamental difference. It helped me start at the beginning, truly at the beginning with the simplest insights, connecting me to my own body, and applying what I had learned over the past 4-5 years, over a lifetime really, in such a way that I could correct my posture and truly understand the causes of my pain. When I first did his program about two years ago I went skiing a few months later for 2 days and didn’t have any pain. I also went hiking for 2 days, didn't have pain. Then I discontinued and the pain creeped back. I started the program again 2 weeks ago and I can tell how quickly my core is strengthening. I only have positive things to say about this course and how well it is laid out, thought out, and executed. And Dr. Peebles really cares. He is very personal and responsive to questions. I appreciate him so much. But, like everything else, you have to actually “do the program on a daily basis” to get better. It's a commitment. I wish you lots of success on your journey.

I am eternally grateful to Dr.Ryan’s Core Balance Training program. It completely transformed my body from being constantly on the edge of disaster to being fully confident in my ability to have a capable body at all times. I work my ass off doing landscaping, construction, and restaurant work, and surf almost every day. I haven’t missed a day due to back issues in two years!

25 years of lower back issues now gone after 3 months

My profession is in the IT world and I work on computer networks, solving problems. which is why I always search for a root cause of any issue. This was one tough “bug” I carried for a long time!" For some reason, the larger healthcare community can't figure this one out and simply resort to the usual therapies without addressing the ROOT CAUSE (the same is true with disease and obesity issues). 12-Month Follow Up: I have been pain-free since October 2021! 25 years of lower back issues now gone after 3 months of simple movements!

Gave me back my active life!

Core Balance Trailing gave me back my active life! I have always loved to backpack, hike, bike, sup and do yoga. Unfortunately, my back problems were cutting me off from these experiences and causing me a great deal of pain and discomfort. There were days I could hardly walk and was having nerve pain shooting all the way from my back to my foot. Through this program I was able to learn what patterns were causing this and retrain my body to optimal movement. I was even able to hike the 200 mile John Muir Trail through the Sierras this summer! I thought often on that trip about how grateful I am to be able to do things like that that bring me such joy and that my back is healthy to do so. I hope others can experience the same relief I have an get back to enjoying life to its fullest!

From contracted limb-dominant movement to expanded core-dominant movement

I've been struggling with lower back pain since I had an injury when I was 8. I tried everything from physical therapy to chiropractics, neuromuscular therapy, craniosacral therapy, massage, acupuncture, meditation and yoga. It all helped, especially doing yoga 3x/week for 10 years, but I was still in pain at times. CBT taught me a new paradigm of movement, from a contracted limb-dominant movement to an expanded core-dominant movement. Rewiring my body to move like this naturally got me out of pain, and has made each day so much more comfortable, and movement so much more fun. Thank you Dr. Ryan!

A Very effective course!!

I found Ryan's course on Facebook at a time I had constant back ache, especially after I did my exercise walk outside. The exercises are very effective, when practiced consistently. My favorite is the dead bug. I actually feel that exercise in my lower back. Ryan's tutorials are easy to follow (although the exercises can and should be challenging) as he explains the exercise, its effects and where we need to focus so that it works.

This is a great program for helping back pain as well as just learning about your body and how to improve the way it moves.

Life changing

I’ve struggled with tension and pain throughout my core for years… lower back, hips, neck, shoulders. And I’ve tried more solutions than I can remember. Ryan’s program is easily the best… bc it’s the only one that’s worked. I’m less than 4 weeks in and it’s already life changing. I’m releasing tension and fixing imbalances that I’ve had for decades. The exercises are simple but profoundly effective. When you have tension in your deep core muscles, no amount of stretching or body work will fix it. If you’re experiencing any type of core imbalance, get this program… it’ll be the best money you’ve ever spent!

Helpful Course for Back Improvements & Learning

I have been taking the Core Balance Training course for awhile now and love the holistic approach. Ryan is great, and so easy to listen to. He speaks about concepts so well, making sure it's easy to understand and you know why it's important. Then you practice different movements, and even breath work, while learning about the muscles you're using and why it's important for your back. I have learned so much, and really enjoy the course. It feels like I'm getting the PT secrets for how to really take care of your back, and I know I'm going to use these concepts and exercises for the rest of my life!

Relief When I Thought Relief Was Impossible

I have had back pain for literally 40 + years and have seen lots of doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, etc., but nothing has ever given me the relief of the Core Balance Training Program. The system and easy-to-follow videos have given me a day-to-day progression model I value plus the ability to improve my mobility, live the athletic lifestyle I want and literally almost remove day-to-day pain from my life as a 63-year-old. I could not be more pleased.

This is an amazing course. Highly recommended.

I am only two weeks into this course and I am already seeing positive changes. Dr. Ryan is the real deal and I am always amazed that he manages to answer and respond to every question and comment students leave after each lesson in the course. Considering the fact that I have to pay 125 per visit to my PT, to get access to Dr. Ryan, and this program for 3 months for only 197 dollars is a steal. I can't wait to see what the coming weeks and months bring.
