From Paralyzing Back Injury to Running a Half Marathon in Four Months

I just posted the following to the CBT Student Hub, where members can ask questions and share experience with the program. Hi Friends, I wrote a lot in the beginning, then fell out of the habit, and now here I am in my final week of the program. Just an update and status report. The timing is very good to complete the first pass, because just yesterday I experienced what was a miracle for me. Four months ago I had to cancel participation in my first attempted half marathon run. I had trained too hard in too short a time, had a solid history of anterior pelvic tilt (which I always thought was normal), and a horrible record of no core strengthening or stretching. Running and beach muscle had gotten all the attention. This I believe added up to a lumbar disk herniation and branch nerve pinch that left me unable to stand or lay flat for more than 1 minute or so. More or less paralyzed for a solid month. It really took most of that month for the diagnosis, then I got some steroidal relief, the herniation began to self rectify, and I began Core Balance Training to correct all the things that weren't there to support my normal training. The way I initially felt, I fully expected a whole year to go by before running again, or as many suggested, that at age 66, my running days were over. Well, about a month into CBT, two months after injury, I took my first light steps on a treadmill. And yesterday, I completed my first ever half marathon with a time of 2:03:27. For my age, that is a reasonable time for a full length, 12 or more weeks, of hard optimal training. So really, this seems amazing to me, and I wish all here similar good healing fortune. I can't give CBT full credit for the body's wonderful ability to heal itself. But I am convinced that from the first week, CBT put my spine into an environment where it could heal itself the fastest, and withstand training forces which would otherwise slow or reverse that healing. I enthusiastically look forward to repeating the program at least once. I will appreciate the elementary details more, having experienced the entire program, and I definitely still have spots to focus on where I have significant difficulty. Will try to stay in touch better too! - Doug
