Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Very disappointed

One star doesn't adequately describe my anger at the charges levied by Celebrity for a genuinely unavoidable cancellation. Along with the agent and one excursion we are out of pocket by over £1000. My wife has a lot of pain and is under a consultant. A recent consultations means we can't make the cruise. The agent is nit interested saying claim on insurance. We tried to appeal at the tail end of last year before we've booked insurance because why would we pay for insurance in a year we don't need it. I am now investigating what action I can take because as pensioners, this began as a once in a lifetime joint 70th birthday treat but instead, the agent wouldn't cooperate and it leaves a sour taste.

This is my second experience with…

This is my second experience with Celebrity Cruises, and I am once again left feeling disappointed. My first cruise had numerous issues: the room was below standard, the AC was malfunctioning, the curtains were torn and taped together, and the faucet leaked. Believing in second chances, I decided to book another cruise on a different ship. Unfortunately, this time I faced multiple overcharges for the minibar that I never used, as I don’t drink. Additionally, they incorrectly double-charged my final bill, leading to overdraft fees and several bounced payments. Throughout both experiences, I never received any accountability or support from the staff to address my concerns.

How is this cruise line still in business?

Just the worst holiday experience. Poor food, awful cabin, unfriendly crew. I have sailed with many different cruise lines and would now never sail with another RCL company again, all I can assume is they are in financial difficulty.

I was disappointed with Celebrity

I was disappointed with Celebrity , felt the Caribbean cruise far superior . The night entertainment was very limited . I have a dairy and egg I tolerance and had to ask which food was suitable for every course every item every meal. The restaurant was great they accommodated my intolerance down to a T . The after noon treat only accommodated me it’s took three days to get this organised for the cruiser I was sharing with then we did get separate treats to suit If this had been my first cruise I’d never go on a cruise again .

We had a 12 night cruise from Hong Kong…

We had a 12 night cruise from Hong Kong to Singapore on Solstice. Few hiccups but all seemed ok until we left Vietnam heading to Thailand. I developed severe abdo pain, attended the medical room and came across the rudist medical staff I have ever come across (and working in the health profession I've met a few). I was promptly sent to a local hospital in Bangkok - received excellent care during my 2 night stay and diagnosed with food poisoning! Obviously I missed the last 6 days of my holiday due to this and continued to receive medical care back home where my diagnosis was confirmed as Campylabacter. I told the ship I knew exactly which food I had eaten to contract this which they said they'd look into, and I also know other guests were ill on this cruise too which I know does happen in places where there are lots of people sharing areas. My concern is the lack of interest Celebrity seem to have with such issues, and their main priority was to make sure my husband had packed our belongings and left the ship! We have contacted them numerous times since our return home and feel their lack lustre approach leaves a lot to be desired! The second half of my holiday was ruined and we ended up returning home earlier to continue my medical care.

Disappointed on a cruise

We had a 7 day cruise out of San Juan 12/14/24-12/21/24 for four days of that cruise we couldn’t watch tv every time we said something guest services said it’s being worked on and that’s it blew us off the last night of cruise they sent us a $9-$14 bottle of wine keep in mind we purchased a non alcoholic drink package we do not drink why would that be their THOUGHTFUL gesture! They nickel and dime guests for every little thing and they don’t want to compensate their guests for what we obviously purchased a balcony room with a TV !! Look around for another cruise line this one’s customer service leaves a lot to be desired!!

Damaged suitcase

Celebrity cruises damaged the retracting handle of my suitcase and are only offering 60% of the cost to replace it. Told me to take it to the repair shop but there are no suitcase repair shops in Edinburgh. The retractable handle is so bent it will not retract deeming the case as unusable. I reported this in the terminal, filled out the forms, took pictures and videos. I sent it to the relevant dept but they are not willing to payout the replacement cost. I have sailed over 10 cruises with them but they could not careless. They are taking 40% off the cost saying it is depreciation value, i am astounded at this pettyness. Surely if you damage a suitcase you replace it in full.

Celebrity long haul and passengers with mobility issues definitely a NO NO

Long haul cruises definitely not suitable for passengers in wheelchairs. No visible disability policy. You have to request assistance at many levels. It’s not automatic. No priority given for lift access in spite of lofts breaking down frequently. No special assistance for embarkation and disembarkation. Staff really do their best but with no special assistance or reserved areas for disabled passengers it means you have to reach out and ask for help all the time. Frustrating and stressful. I would never do a long haul cruise with them again. In fact I have been put off for life. Money talks and it fees like a money grabbing organisation. The staff are very friendly and helpful and do their best but can only work within their staff status and company policy.

DO NOT BOOK SOLSTICE CLASS SHIPS

Recently book a cruise on a Celebrity solstice class ship. I paid extra for the Aqua Class cabin expecting that I would be insured a better experience. I was so wrong. During the cruise we were interrupted over and over with incessant POUNDING 24 hours a day on the ceiling of our cabin from TREADMILLS located on the floor above. I complained to the spa, the gym, the “guest non-relations” and left a message for the captain. At one point they blamed me for the problem telling me I should have know this before booking the cruise and then they rudely offered me EARPLUGS?? We were “assured” that the issue would be addressed but it never was. I complained after the cruise to the corporate office and they just thanked me for informing them of “an issue they were already aware of” AVOID CELEBRITY AND ALL SOLSTICE CLASS SHIPS AT ALL COST. To fix this Celebrity needs to learn customer service and be honest with the defects in the design of their ships and the inability of their crew.

Worst buffett food of any cruise line, but the best dining room food of any cruise line we've been on.

The dining room food is the best we've had compared with Norwegian, Carnival, and Princess cruise lines. The buffet food is the worst of any cruise line we've ever been on. So on port days you are stuck with the buffet food for breakfast and lunch. Also the alcohol prices are the highest , including drink packages, of any of the other cruise lines. The cheapest glass of wine is $18 after gratuities. An IPA beer is $18 after gratuities as well. They offered us a 30% discount on the drink package and it would have been $595 for 5 days plus a 20% gratuity! Oh well, I needed to cut down on my drinking anyway. We are on day 3 and so far it's been OK, nothing to brag about.
