Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? Bin seit über 10 Jahren hoch zufriedener Kunde von Celebrity Cruises. War immer mit den Leistungen zufrieden. Gelegentlich gab es kleinere Probleme mit der Buchung. Aber die konnte ich immer problemlos telefonisch mit dem freundlichen und kompetenten Team aus Hamburg zur vollen Zufriedenheit klären. Jetzt hat Celebrity Cruises sein backoffice nach München verlegt. Seither gibt einen ganz schrecklichen neuen Internetauftritt. Die Mitarbeiter sind auch sehr freundlich aber leider von keiner Sachkenntnis getrübt. Die kennen nicht einmal die Schiffe von Celebrity. Vom Produkt selber ganz zu schweigen. Hab das Gespräch abgebrochen und bei einer anderen Gesellschaft gebucht.

WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

be careful with website bookings

we booked a cruise for feb. 8th. 2014, but due to an error on their website we ended up with a reservation for march 8th. 2014. When we tried to cancel, they wanted 50% cancellation fee, even if their website made a faulty booking. We had to go through a Visa cancellation to get our money back.

Amazing cruise line

We went to 4 cruises with Celebrity and I can honestly say we had the best time! Our favourite is Millennium, but Summit and Eclipse are also very good. Service, food, accommodation and more is 5*. I cannot wait to have another cruise on Celebrity.

Honeymoon bliss

Got on a 7 day on the summit southern Caribbean, most amazing islands service was best ever and food too and we got cruise using our cruisemiles so cost was minimal

Alt for vildt - fantastisk meget for pengene!

Vi har prøvet mange forskellige rederier efterhånden. Royal Caribbean, Azamara, Sea Dream yacht Club og Norwegian Cruise Lines, bare for at nævne de største. Vores seneste cruise med Celebrity Eclipse, var også det første med dette rederi. Aldrig har vi fået så meget for pengene. Det siger sig selv at det ikke slår Sea Dream Yacht Club, men der er også forskel på at betale kr. 700,- pr. dag og betale kr. 3.000,- pr. dag. Kahytterne (Vi havde en billig udvendig kahyt med balkon) var bedre end både Azamara og Sea Dream, maden i specialitetsrestauranterne var på niveau med Sea Dream og Azamara. Eneste minus var at det var så som så med den meget personlige service. Det siger næsten sig selv på et skib til over 3.000 passagerer. Til gengæld var skibet helt fantastisk både i indretning og design. Der var stort set ikke et eneste sted på skibet, hvor man kunne se mere end 75 mennesker ad gangen ud over poolområdet, teatret og cafeteriet. Skibet var indrettet så man fik oplevelsen af at være på et lille skib, men man kunne nyde godt af de mange faciliteter som er på et stort skib. Designet var moderne og smagsfuldt. Der var lækkert design overalt, menuer på iPad, ice bar, molekylær bar og så var det hele bare SÅ gennemført. Børneklubben var helt enestående og efter vores mening bedre end både NCL og Royal Caribbean. Eneste minus er at der ikke rigtigt er noget vandområde til småbørn (ikke pottetrænede). Efter vores opfattelse kan Celebrity sagtens konkurrere med Sea Dream og Azamara, hvis man kan leve med at skulle dele besætningens opmærksomhed med 3.000 andre passagerer. OPDATERING 12. FEBRUAR 2012 Vi er netop kommet hjem fra vores andet cruise med Celebrity. Denne gang valgte vi at sejle fra New York med Celebrity Silhouette i 12 dage rundt i Caribien. I modsætning til vores første cruise, var der denne gang alt for mange småting som irriterede os. Skibets roomservice fungerede overhovedet ikke. Vi kom til at vente væsentlig længere end de lovede 40 minutter. Vi ventede i helt op til halvanden time, selvom vi i to omgange blev lovet at maden var på vej. Kaffen var tynd og direkte udrikkelig (vi troede først at der var tale om te) og kahytten blev kun gjort ren, når vi bad om det. Checkin og ombordstigningen i Bayonne virkede uorganiseret og det var meget trættende at skulle stå op i en kø i mere end 60 minutter med to små børn. Hovedrestauranten fungerede heller ikke optimalt. Vi rejste 10 personer sammen og sad ved et 10-mands bord. Hovedretterne blev ikke serveret samtidig og ofte oplevede vi at børnene først fik deres mad, når de voksne fik deres hovedretter, med det resultat at børnene den første aften faldt i søvn inden maden blev serveret (Vi havde endda bestilt den tidlige seating kl. 18.00). Vi oplevede også at rødvinen først blev serveret efter at vi havde spist vores hovedret. Det bør ikke ske på et premium-rederi. I det hele taget tog det meget lang tid i hovedrestauranten. Faktisk nåede vi ikke i teatret én eneste aften, fordi vi enten havde ventet på desserten eller også bare generelt havde siddet for længe mellem retterne. Maden i hovedrestauranten var generelt kønsløst og efter vores opfattelse bedre på Royal Caribbean. Supperne var ikke engang pyntet af med et stykke persille, de blev serveret i nogle tarvelige og slidte porcelænsskåle uden dikke-darer. Det havde ikke kostet mange ressourcer lige at pynte af inden servering. Vi prøvede tre af skibets specialitetsrestauranter ombord. Den første var Qusine, som vi også havde prøvet på Eclipse. Vi har ikke helt så begejstret som på det første cruise. Æggeskallerne til creme brulleen var nu af plastik og der var ikke brugt rigtige sushi ris i deres sushi lollipops, men i stedet noget melet stads, som stort set var uspiseligt. De to andre specialitetsrestauranter som vi prøvede var Murano og Lawn Club Grill. Disse restauranter overraskede til gengæld meget positivt. Murano havde en meget høj standard og et ekstremt højt bundniveau. Det var en stor fornøjelse. Lawn Club Grill var Celebritys seneste påfund og findes så vidt vi ved kun på Silhouette og på den nye Reflection. Det er en udendørs restaurant ud til græsplænen på øverste dæk, hvor man selv kan grille sin mad. Kødet var helt fantastisk, personalet var SÅ venligst og vores to små drenge på to hhv. fire år, var henrykt. VORES ANBEFALING Celebrity Cruises holder stadigvæk til trods for de problemer vi har oplevet. Vi betalte kun ca. kr. 800,- pr. person pr. dag i en udvendig kahyt med balkon og de nye Celebrity skibe er ofte billigere end de nye Royal Caribbean skibe. Med prisen in mente, er der ikke noget at være i tvivl om. Celebrity er stadig suverænt godt til prisen og vil man være sikker på at man får en 5-stjernet madoplevelse hver eneste aften, skal man bare huske at have afsat USD 40,- pr. person pr. dag til opgradering til en af de vellykkede specialitetsrestauranter. Rejser man med børn, anbefaler vi at de er fyldt 3 år, så de selv kan deltage i de mange aktiviteter i Fun Factory. Der var både pizza party, slumber party, besøg på broen osv. For unge par under 50 år og familier med børn, anbefaler vi at man vælger et 7 dages cruise frem for et 12 eller 14 dages cruise, da de lange ture tiltrækker mange gamle.
