Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Very disappointed with my experience so…

Very disappointed with my experience so far. I booked a Prime Varanda, and at the time of reservation, it showed as being in the middle of the ship. However, when I checked later, I realized they had assigned me a cabin at the very front. I get seasick when sailing at the ends of the ship. I called customer service and spent over an hour on the phone, but they refused to change my cabin. If I canceled, I would lose my deposit. The only alternative they offered was to combine my and my wife's reservation with my children's into a single cabin in the middle of the ship—despite originally booking two separate cabins. I'm extremely disappointed with the service. It’s hard to believe the entire ship is fully booked! They could and should have been more flexible and considerate toward us as passengers. The result? All four of us now have to share one cabin! Here is the description of your Prime Varanda: Prime Veranda Stateroom . Amenities: Sleeps 2-4. Studio, 1 bathroom. 246 sqft. Located on higher decks. Midship, central deck locations. Balcony with seating. As you can see, it says very Clear: MIDSHIP!

Customer service is very poor nowadays …

I have been on quite a few cruises most of them either with celebrity or Princess. I am due to go on a cruise later this month and have called Celebrity customer services 3 times to try and get some help with a booking. The level of customer service since my earlier cruises seems to have dropped dramatically. Before it was a pleasure to deal with Celebrity and you left feeling valued and your business appreciated. The level of customer service now is poor and if they can get off the hook in helping you or not making any changes then that’s what they seem to do. It’s excuse after excuse that they can’t contact this department or that department and you have to wait until you are boarding to make any requests or link bookings. I am wondering if they are partnered with British airways who also seem to be a poor imitation of the company they once were. Top tip - give Princess a try instead of Celebrity

Won't transfer deposits in emergency situations

We placed a deposit for a curse then a few months later my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer. Due to her treatments we are unable to go on our trip as planned. We reached out in hopes of having a credit for a future cruse once she is able to travel again. We were told our only option was to pay $100 for each person to switch the deposit and had to pick the dates to switch it to now which we can't do until she's completed treatment. So we lost our $500 deposit which is ridiculous for a company to do when they could have easily kept the deposit and allowed us to use it for a future trip.

Be careful, if you have food allergy

My kid was served with food that contain peanut butter sauce after I told them that she has severe peanut allergy. I understand some people might say you need to take responsibility if it's a buffet, but we were in a main dinning restaurant, we checked with the waiter several times and he told us, there's no peanuts or any nuts in it at all. But she had immediate allergic reaction after she took a few bites, luckily I gave her the medicine right away since her tongue had started swelling and she couldn't breath. In the following 5 hours, she went through vomiting, rash, swelling, and stomach ache. We couldn't go anywhere, we stayed with her and watched her the whole afternoon and the whole night, to make sure she's fine. My daughter didn't eat anything that day. Everybody was exhausted. But hey, who cares, as long no one dies they refused to take the responsibility, they refused to even partially refund. They said they will try to submit a refund request, but they didn't. They said their manager will call me back within a week, but they didn't, they promised again said a manager will call me within that day, but hey, you can imagine the results, another week passed, no one called, no one care. So please please please, if you have food allergy, please think twice before you go with them.

Celebrity Infinity January 2025 disappointing cruise

Very Disappointed with my recent cruse on celebrity infinity, our aqua class cabin was shabby, dirty stained furniture, and the shower in dire need of refurbishment. There was loud music everywhere on the ship which was a real nuisance, and the evening shows were so loud that people including myself had to have their hands over their ears. Slow service in the “blu” restaurant and having to queue rather than walk in to “ any time dining” sometimes was also very disappointing. The menus in blu were also very limited. the whole ship needs refurbishing. No one enforced sanitising so everyone just walked past any that happened to be there which were very few. The library was barely half stocked (with no books in English (!) and I was unable to purchase basic necessities onboard such as tissues/toothpaste etc, the ship only having the usual shops selling watches etc. the only positive was the staff were lovely and worked very hard in all areas…..

BBC Ripoff Britain

I just watched the review on BBC Rip Off Britain about the elderly coupled, who got sent off on five flights and then missed their cruise. Celebrity Cruises offered £500 in vouchers instead of refunding their £2000 fare. Absolutely disgusting CC has not fully refunded this elderly couple's fare and awful publicity for CC.

Devastated

Devastated. I had our cruise on hold and had hours before it cancelled to make the payment for our deposit which I was actively trying to do. I called their help line and they told me that even though the hold time had not yet been reached, my booking was still cancelled. No care, no organisation, no compassion whatsoever for the fact that I have now missed out on my once in a lifetime trip. I'm devastated by what they did to me. Don't trust them.

Good but very bad.

We booked our first ever cruise on Celebrity and we traveled on the Solstice from Singapore to Hong Kong. Pluses:- good embarkation process, a well presented older ship, the food was excellent and the staff were brilliant. No faults at all on that score. The bad:- Ports of call are mainly industrial ports and one port of call, Laem Chabang is a very busy port. On the date of call the port was jammed up with Lorrie’s that jeopardised guests excursion plans. Guest were forced to walk out to meet taxis through dangerous conditions. This could have been avoided by not using an industrial port. Passenger safety on shore is disregarded. No transport at some ports of call to the port entrance. Because they use these ports it costs guests more in taxis to nearby towns as the ports are miles away from anywhere decent. The quality of the drinks package is poor. Drinks outside of your package are very poor quality. Don’t ask for a Porn Star Martini as what they give you is nothing like a Porn Star Martini and it cost $18US for the privilege of throwing it away! The shows are mediocre. We had two decent shows. The rest were bordering on amateur. Everything is an upsell opportunity for Celebrity. From the minute you board to when you disembark it’s sell sell sell. We hadn’t been on ten minutes before it was pushing the speciality restaurants and then towards the end it was pushing the overpriced airport and hotel transfer service stating the lie about a shortage of taxis in Hong Kong. We would probably cruise again but because of the use of industrial ports and the inability of the bars unable to make a decent drink at huge cost, it’s unlikely to be with Celebrity.
