Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Celebrity Reflection - would recommend

Celebrity Reflection 11 July. Clean tidy and spacious cabin. Uber friendly staff. Fantastic food and excellent service at meal times. Food choice was excellent and quality was equally as good. Only criticism; not overly quick to serve drinks, but we just about got our monies worth!

Golden wedding anniversary and lack of best wishes from celebrity

We have used celebrity cruises for years and loved them. However we decided after doing Rockies, Banff, Vancouver we would celebrate our golden wedding anniversary 50years sailing round Alaska. Our travel agent informed them and so did we on the ship. On the day in question nothing even though other cabins had happy birthday happy anniversary. What a complete let down. Hubby went to guest relations to mention his disappointment and in the afternoon we received a call stating they would be sending a bottle of wine even though we had a drinks package. He told them it was a little too late. They have apologised but this has left a sour taste

Awful customer service

We have booked on Apex for later in July 2025 and have to say that to date the whole experience since booking has been awful. We can't book and pay for packages because of an issue with Celebrity processing Mastercard payments - they have finally admitted it is there issue after weeks of saying its a problem with our bank. They even told us to go and apply for an Amex car to make it easier for them! After many calls, email etc still no resolution. They promise to call us back, never do and do not reply to emails. Can't buy packages, can't book meals, trips etc. Told to just "sort it out onboard". Honestly the worst experience I have had with any holiday company. Do yourselves a favour and cruise with someone else. If we could cancel the whole trip now and get our money back I would. In comparison, Princess cruises customer service is impeccable.

Best of Greece Cruise on Celebrity Infinity

We just got back from a 7-day Best of Greece Cruise. We travelled with a group of friends. We had fun time. The staff right from housekeeping to the restaurants, to the bar, the music were really good. The staff went over and beyond. Check-in and check- out was smooth and very well organized. Once we checked in, we got to our room pretty fast. The food choices were excellent. Enjoyed the Thallasotherapy pool. However, I have an issue with them keeping water in the room. Considering it was a hot day, who goes to read that you would be charged 5 Euros. We had the Premium drink Package, they should have kept bottles of water complimentary.

HORRIBLE FOODS, COFFEE, DRINKS

The foods is so bad I only ate french fries and pizza the entire trip. The coffee is so horrible, I can't smell any coffee. It's just the dark bitter water. The Colombia coffee from Walmart at home tastes 10 times better than on Celebrity cruises. This tasteless coffee on the ship ruined all my mornings. The fruits are old, mushy and tasteless. The ship is so cheap cutting up the banana into small 3 pieces. None of the fruits are worth eating. I sailed another Celebrity ship and Royal Caribbean last year and experienced the exact same low foods quality. The Royal Caribbean company cuts costs by serving cheap foods and drinks. The employees doesn't look happy. They must be overworked and underpaid. An AquaClass price is $5K per person. They apparently kept the customer's money and fed them craps. I never recommend Royal Caribbean, Celebrity to families and friends.

Our worse cruise ever

Our worse cruise ever Woken every morning at 7am to an annoying announcement to say we have docked. No quite places on the ship. Boy band playing 'Ibiza' music every evening in the main atrium.Couldn't even have a conversation with the person next to you. Brought a WiFi package pre cruise then found you could only email and see Facebook, when asked the upgrade price was £23 person per day. No kettle or water in our cabin ,but a fridge full of 'to pay for drinks ' Pre paid drinks package very limited- no cocktails or draught beer Same food served in main restaurant night after night. And no tables for 4,6 or 8 so you could meet other Guests . It was always the same table ! for 2 . Formal night- people dressed in shorts etc still allowed in restaurant, despite notice saying they won't be - total waste of time taking nice clothes and jewellery. Extra payments being put on our account that we were unaware of - when questioned Guest services they said the account would be on hold just in case we did any shopping on board and then the money would be refunded the day after the end of the cruise. Yes it was - but for days Celebrity Cruises had my money earning them interest! No we would never go we Celebrity Cruises again.

This is my opinion of Celebrity

Having now cruised with Celebrity several times on different ships, I feel I can give an overall opinion: On the plus side; the staff, generally, put in a lot of effort to be polite and helpful. The ships are well presented and clean (although have encountered ants on all of them). The food is exceptionally, with an astonishing variety . Sometimes it borders on Michelin Star territory! On the negative; this is an American line and their objective is to extract as much money from you as humanly possible. So expect 20% gratuity(!) at every opportunity. Everything is charged, nothing is a gift, you are there to be milked of your money,on an industrial scale. Depending on which package you have purchased, you have access to a range of beverages but this is not free-range, they will police what you consume and the bar staff can be quite stingy in providing service. Be aware this is not high end cruising, while not entry level, it is very much an everyman experience, so do not expect blue ribbon service. It is more "sort yourself out" rather than "concierge"! The guests are predominantly US, so it is heavily geared to them. If you are in the far East; Australians making up the rest. The entertainment is a mixed bag, so it's try it and see; you might be pleasantly surprised or seriously underwhelmed! What is very annoying, is the dreadful music that is loudly played across the decks when guests are relaxing on the sun beds (if you can get one). Please switch it off, or at least turn the volume down. The inevitably "Spring Bteak style Yankee pool parties seem to like it but they are so well lubricated, they would never notice.... Overall, I would recommend the company and I will continue to use but they have many issues that need fixing, if the accountants will let them spend the money on the right areas. There are plenty of better lines, so spend your hard earned cash wisely!

Loved the ship

Loved the ship, the friendly and accomodating staff, food and entertainment. Great cruise line! Unfortunately their customer service leading up to the trip was surprisingly disappointing. I had to call three times on the same issue and each time was given a totally different answer That does not instill confidence.
