Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

On the Apex

On the Apex, the ship's common facilities are terrific. I am less happy with the room layout and size. 1. The TV placement only allows for decent viewing from the bed not the couch. Makes it impossible to watch from the couch when your spouse goes to bed early. 2. The room appears more narrow than on earlier class ships. No coffee table.

I can’t believe all the problems I have…

I can’t believe all the problems I have had on this cruise. They were all little things but they have now added up. First my bag was pretty much destroyed somewhere from drop off to my room. It was sent down and they literally stapled it together and expected me to see that as acceptable. I had to argue with them to totally replace it. 2nd I was served a Scotch Egg and discovered the sausage was raw when I took a bite, minor I know, it all adds up. 3 only 2 out of 4 excursion tickets made it to my room so I had to go to guest services and have them print me another set. 4 I prefer to eat at the buffet for pretty much all my meals, twice did someone wait on me at my table and I had to go get my drink which took forever because there were only 2 bartenders. My food was usually cold by the time I got back and once my plate was taken. Multiple managers were made aware, the head of food service came and spoke to me. I was appreciative for his concern but I don’t feel anything was accomplished because nothing has changed. 5 I was charged for minibar items that either were never in my fridge initially when I got on board. I had put 1up on the counter by other things I never intended to drink but I guess was not visible enough because I got charged for 2, one that never existed and one that was there. 6 my beach excursions in St John’s was awful, it was a complete dump. 7 you can’t walk into Effy look at 1 thing without being swarmed by high pressure sales assistants. I will say they are lovely people but they need to back off. FYI, if they tell you the low price they are offering is only for that day I’m calling BS. I’m sure that price will be honored at anytime and might get cheaper closer to the end. I think that’s it but I have 3 days to go. This is my 4th cruise so I know this doesn’t happen on other ships, or at least to this extent, but it’s been enough things that makes me wonder about consistency across the fleet. Celebrity is supposed to be RC’s upscale line but if they want to call it that they need to pay attention to details better. If you are wondering, even though it should not make a difference, I am concierge (sp?) class and I have the premium beverage package. Also, the complimentary free bottle of champagne for my class is disgusting. Good thing it’s free and subjective

The best cruise line - recommended

We sailed on Celebrity Summit around the Caribbean for my big birthday celebrations. I had booked an inside cabin and was very pleased to get a free upgrade to an oceanview two weeks before we sailed. I suspect it was because I am a member of the Captains Club and it was my big birthday. They also recognised my birthday and delivered a card and bottle of red wine to my cabin. I also got a birthday cake and staff sang happy birthday to me in the restaurant. They really helped to make my birthday special. We really enjoyed our cruise as it was not overcrowded like other cruises we'd been on. There always seemed to be seating available everywhere and we felt very relaxed. The only downside were the evening meals - whilst overall it was fine; three out of seven nights my meat was overcooked. They served a very well done steak to me on my birthday despite the fact I'd asked for medium. I can only conclude that we had a party of six and this proved challenging for the chef to get all the meals out together. The sommelier Jenny and wine were top-notch. Brilliant service and so friendly. We particularly liked the Spa Cafe and the Abba singalong night. The excursions were well organised too. We'd recommend Celebrity - relaxed ships that never felt overcrowded and the other passengers didn't seem as pushy or shouty as on other budget cruise lines.

Celebrity Cost Cutters

We cruised on the Celebrity Equinox in the Mediterranean in July this year. The cruise was good but we definitely noticed that they had been cost cutting particularly with the drinks that were being served. I’m not sure how they managed it but every mixer they served whether it be coke, lemonade or tonic water was flat. They serve high quality expensive gins and vodkas and then waste them with cheap mixers that went flat the second they were poured. The rose wine on the standard drinks package was undrinkable and they had the audacity to charge $12 for it. Whoever chose this wine should be sacked. However what I couldn’t understand was, whoever thought it was a good idea to have Newcastle brown ale on tap at the pool bar. They definitely saved money on that one as I never saw one person order it the entire cruise. Celebrity chose to cut costs and believe me, it was noticeable.

We have recently returned from a cruise…

We have recently returned from a cruise on Apex from Southampton to Portugal,Canaries Madeira and Spain. We booked late and only a retreat suite was available definitely not worth the extra price. The food in Luminaire was not particularly special the service was even worse. The service on the retreat deck was extremely slow. We had our dinner in the other restaurants the menus are all repetitive on a base served with just a twist to suit the restaurant you were in. The specialist restaurants were more than disappointing especially for the extra money charged for them. Our suite was at the front of the boat and I’ve never been in such a noisy room, all night it sounded like something was banging on the walls never had a nights sleep.Complained to our Butler on several occasions but nothing was ever done. We have booked to go on Apex again in June 2025 to Norway but I think that I will give it a miss. Very over rated.

Tired & rundown Celebrity Equinox

Used Vuelling airline as part of deal-Spanish Ryanair-no comfort, drinks or food.Long wait at Barcelona airport for transfer to ship as they waited to fill coach.Cabin ready on arrival-newly cleaned(!)-very dirty stained sofa, smear marks on back of cabin door(there for 9 nights),general tatty feeling to cabin, curtains to balcony hanging off hooks.Very expensive excursions & drinks.Main dining room menu limited & repetitive.Shows ok but nothing special.Night 4 of 9 partner became ill, needed urgent medical attention, put in isolation until evening of night 8.I became ill night 6 of 9 & put in isolation until I left the ship -NOROVIRUS.They did change procedures in self-serve areas, but far too late.Didn,t make it clear how many people were ill & didn’t announce what to do if you got it.Guest Services not very helpful.Doctor was lovely.Made us go down to the medical centre for treatment & even took me back to cabin in a wheelchair in the lift letting other guests use it when I was highly contagious!Luckily we got refunded for excursions, but it took some pressure & phone -calls. Disembarkation very disorganised, coach transfer to airport waited for 45 mins just to fill up,with many people saying how little time they,d have to check-in.Our Gate was being called by the time we cleared passport control & we had to rush.Having lost 7 days of our holiday I,m not sure I,ll use the only ‘compensation ‘ we got-money towards a future Celebrity cruise!Only our cabin steward really kept smiling all through our holiday!

Beyond my expectations!!

Wow wow wow! With apex being in Southampton we really wanted to try this cruise line for the 1st time and it loved beyond our expectations. The crew were super friendly and went the extra mile for everything. The ship itself is Beautiful. I was a little skeptical as I’ve been on much larger ships like the Iona, and Oasis of the seas and I thought maybe this might be a little small but I was so wrong! If anything it was designed better than this bigger ships. Entertainment 12/10. Just fantastic!! We will 100% being booking to go back on celebrity again.

There was False advertising

There was False advertising. I have screenshots of details with up to 75% off the 2nd guest as a Banner on the specific cruise that we chose. However, the discount was not applied, even thought the terms and conditions were specifically stated that it did not exclude the trip I chose. We spoke to the support/help team and queried this, we got very vague answers and when questioned it, they hung up on us. Very disappointed with the misleading and false advertising

Worst cruise ever

We are on celebrity equinox at the moment, concierge class. Only one nice restaurant to choose from. Food awful. We are sticking to the buffet. Not much to do through the day. Staff are lovely. Thank goodness we got the drinks package. Not only do they add tips to the cruise they also charge 20% onto any drinks you buy. Total rip off. We have been on many cruises. I would say this is the worst. I'll never book with celebrity again.
