Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Over-priced, Over-promoted and Under-delivered cruise experience

We sailed on the Celebrity Edge out of Sydney Australia in December 2024. The cruise was an Australian Wine Cruise. The ship was modern and OK as far as that goes however, the overall cruise experience was over-priced, over-promoted (by the cruise line itself and various Travel Agents) and it certainly under-delivered. We chose the much vaunted Retreat class and that's indeed where the over adjectives and the under-delivered comes in. The lauded butler service was highly unsatisfactory and the Retreat lounge and deck left one feeling this is in some ways inferior even to business class lounges at airports. Perhaps worse than all of this was Celebrity Cruise Line's non-response to my communications with them. I tried to reach out to them with my feedback and I was obviously seeking some redress however, they apparently chose to totally ignore my three emails (the first reporting my concerns and two follow ups after not even getting an auto-generated acknowledgment). I can not recommend this line and will never sail with them again. UPDATE 30th March 2025 Well sadly, notwithstanding my emails to the cruise line and my review here, absolutely no contact has been received from Celebrity Cruises. It is little wonder then that this site shows a 63% one star rating!

Second cruise with Celebrity

Second cruise with Celebrity, wonderful time on both, Solstice and Millennium. Indonesia and India. Balcony cabin. Wonderful service, all staff were so good. Food including steaks was very good, even the buffet. Lots to do and especially enjoyed the coffe lounge. Not one for watching the shows but on the whole heard excellent reviews.Booked to go to South America in January, can't wait 😀

Celebrity Solstice - 5* or 3* rust bucket?

We recently booked a cruise on the Celebrity Solstice, understanding it to be a 5* cruise company. In the event it proved to be a 3* rust bucket. Our balcony rail was not varnished and was just rough wood, The paint was peeling off in handfuls from the rusty walls. Inside the furniture was worn and there were a number of badly done repairs. There was no hospitality tray or fruit basket or binoculars or other things associated with 5* cruising. We had to ask for bath robes which, when they came, had been washed and tumbled to death so they were totally shrunk and misshapen. Food was OK but there was a lack of variety in the fruit and vegetable department. Definitely not the experience we had booked for.

1st time booking a cruise. Phone call to customer service.

1st time booking a cruise.Pre cruise phone call. Rang up to alter the meal time booking . I couldn’t hear what the lady was saying- her accent was quite strong and she did not articulate clearly, she sounded really fed up. I apologised for having to ask her to repeat but this was not acknowledged. I didn’t know the name of the ship ( I know where to look now) and she was clearly so annoyed with me. I explained I was a new comer & was doing my best- no reply to that. I asked for our meal times to be changed & then nothing happened- no goodbye, thank you, that has been done for you, just nothing although I wasn’t cut off the line technically. She just didn’t speak & the call ended. It left such an awful taste. Maybe she was exhausted & had been working too many hours which isn’t a good reflection on the company. I went online and made the change there (🤞, no acknowledgment- how do I know it’s been done?? ) but I wanted to ask something else. Not a nice experience for a first timer buying an expensive holiday.

Celebrity Cruise messed up fron the startr

Celebrity Cruise messed up from the very beginning. I signed up for this cruise as a training for my profession. When the travel agent sent me my registration information and how to set up an account it went well. The next time I tried to go to my account it could not find me. After months working with costumer service, I was advised I was not in the system. I ended up having to get the travel agent involved again. After several attempts to get this fixed, I was able to get into the account. Too late to sign up for shore excursions. The app is very hard to use and I could not get my preboarding to come back up on the app so more problems then. I finally got on the ship and went to the special luncheon that was said to happen for the package I purchased only to find out it did not in include the welcome luncheon. I emailed costumer service again which they advised I had signed up for the wrong package and they were sorry to hear about the problems I had earlier. They have a history of the problems. Nothing offered to assist with this. Never again will I use this cruise line.

Disappointment with Celebrity Cruises Infinity

First time in Celebrity Cruises and likely the last. My issues began upon entering my assigned stateroom. The room had a strong odour of mildew, loose tiles on the shower floor, mouldy shower curtains, and stains on the ceiling. I immediately reported this to the customer relations department. Throughout this situation, I was visited by four different managers, all of whom offered little more than to "wait" while they searched for a different room. They even suggested sending maintenance personnel to make repairs while I was still occupying the room, a solution that was clearly inadequate given the time required for such repairs to be completed properly. Eventually, I was offered a replacement room on a lower deck, which was not the category I had originally paid for. This room also had issues, including mould and loose tiles. While the shower curtain was eventually replaced, the promised repairs to the tiles on the final day of the trip were a mess, leaving grout everywhere. I requested some form of compensation for these inconveniences and was offered a bridge tour, which I declined. I suggested alternative forms of compensation, such as complimentary drinks or Wi-Fi, but these were denied. I am incredibly disappointed with the overall experience. The state of my stateroom, the lack of adequate solutions, and the refusal to offer reasonable compensation have left me feeling frustrated and dissatisfied. I have photos documenting the issues I encountered and am happy to provide them if needed. I would appreciate a prompt response and a discussion of how Celebrity Cruises intends to address this situation.

Celebrity Cruises

We had a cruise on the Constellation last year as part of our holiday. After spending some quality time in Rome we boarded the Constellation with the expectation of spending some quality time on a cruise before continuing our holiday in Venice. Unfortunately our cruise got off to a bad start when we arrived at the ship as we had asked for assistance as my wife was in a wheelchair. We did not get any. We then discovered the ship was very tired and not up to the standard one would have expected. To cap the cruise off half way through my wife’s leg became swollen and we went to see the doctor whilst we were in a port. The doctor looked at my wife’s leg and without examining it he said “That looks like a DVT to me. You have 1 hour to get off the ship. What is going to happen is you (pointing to my wife) are going to stay here while you (pointing at me) are going to your cabin and pack all your belongings. I will arrange help. We were then dumped off the ship. They had arranged an ambulance for my wife and a taxi to take me to the hotel they had booked (non wheelchair friendly). After 20 hours in A&E my wife was given the all clear and signed off as fit to sail and fly. We then contacted them via our travel agent giving them the details and tried to return to our cruise to meet up with our friends who were with us on the holiday. They refused to let us return to the ship. We had to stay in our hotel in southern Italy until we could fly up to Venice to meet up with our friends and complete our holiday. We then spent quality time in Venice. At no time after we were thrown off the ship did Celebrate speak to us directly during our trip. They did phone us in the early hours of the morning once we got home and said if we wanted to speak to them we should phone them back. We asked to be reimbursed for the time we were not on the ship but they refused point blank to refund any cost of the cruise. I think we are probably overly generous awarding them 1 star considering the treatment we received.

DO NOT BOOK A CELEBRITY CRUISE

The customer service is non existent, we have booked a CRUISE for May and so far we've been told we had hotel rooms booked for the night before cruising only to find out nothing is booked and the hotel we thought we were staying in isn't even on their list they use. We've called, emailed customer service and nobody gets back to you. We've been sent incorrect paperwork, the list is endless. It's been the most stressful thing I have ever done and we still have no resolution. Wouldn't recommend this awful company !!
