Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

We went on the solstice just recently…

We went on the solstice just recently and although the ship was fantastic as was the food and crew the Asia trip was rather disappointing The ports were not the original ones this was confirmed by the captain you are going into working docks and are miles from places 4 hours one way to Bangkok etc which we found too far we felt if we had not bought trips we would have been stuck on the ship for the duration of the stay in port this resulted in buying expensive trips that we had not budgeted for, The WiFi is very expensive if you need the upgrade I only need that one for roughly 10 minutes to transfer money but at a cost of $50 no thank you which left me stressed as I was worried about running out of money due to buying trips luckily I changed my debit card to credit card My first experience of cruising will be my last as I felt so stressed out most of the time

Dont write Celebrity off too easily

I think its important to share our experiences of our two celebrity cruises taken this year. These were are first cruises ever. Clearly we dont have anything to compare it with but are due to try another company in April 24. It is fair to say that we enjoyed both our trips overall and had a great time. The biggest issues of concern for us are service standards and quality / quantity of food. Additionally staff are being overstretched which must be down to management decisions. Likewise the portion sizes are ridiculously small in the main dining room (Celebrity Silhouette). The food on the Celebrity Edge was much better but bar staff were overworked and so get snappy or forget things. I believe this is all down to management putting profit before customer satisfaction. They will pay the price in the end as customers leave / make different choices. I'm not sure they actually take the feedback on board. We will be taking further cruises with Celebrity (Europe, Asia and New Zealand) but also other companies. If you do book with Celebrity I would not purchase the drinks package or wifi ever again as they dont represent value for money and you cant get your preference in every bar. The wifi is just not worth it when in Europe if you have free data roaming. Please also note that Celebrity don't give you a lot of information about the ports they call at. It is as if they do it on purpose so you buy an excursion. Some of the ports are just not safe but you are never alerted to the dangers. I would not rule Celebrity out but look at other reviews about the specific ship and remember that people are more likely to write a negative review than a positive one.

Snyt for 200$

Rip Off!

Recently went on the Celebrity Equinox for a 30th anniversary. I definitely should have went with my first choice of Virgin Voyages. The Equinox wasn't that great. Not much to do onboard but drink, and the bartending was very inconsistent. We had a hairdryer with a european plug that I thought would burn up right in my hand. Then a vanity light stopped working, and the shampoo dispenser wasn't working either. (That issue never got resolved) Worst of all, we came back only to find a $690 credit card bill! It seems they did not apply our $500 onboard credit. And they gave no transaction dates as to how they even came up with this amount, just a lump sum. Highly suspicious right there! I emailed them about it but received an error message saying their email address is invalid. I emailed a different address and no response. I know that if I try calling them, I will get the runaround from someone who barely speaks English. This is absolutely unacceptable. I noticed another review with the same complaint. Had to file a transaction dispute with the CC company. And ironically, it's a Celebrity Cruise Visa card. The Equinox deckplan is silly. Only 1 deck has water and ice. That's ridiculous. Their so-called onboard activities were more like a kids birthday party. Just plain silly. I will never cruise with them again.

I am beyond appalled at the customer…

I am beyond appalled at the customer service we have received from Celebrity cruises to date. I even attempted to leave this review on their own website, but even that was extraordinarily difficult! We are a family of seasoned cruisers and rather than use an agent, we decided to book our trip directly through Celebrity Cruises this time, huge mistake!! I originally booked two verandah rooms for our family of 5 and provided all of our details, together with my credit card info. I was assured all was well and I’d receive a confirmation email a few days later. A week or two pass and nothing, not even a debit from my cc. I ring back, bear in mind that their 1800 number from Australia only connects 50% of the time, and when it does there’s usually a 10-20 minute wait. I ask what’s going on, only to be told there was a problem with their merchant facilities and they were unable to process the payment. No email, no call, nothing. They allegedly tried a few days later, and although there was no problem with my card, the deposit still couldn’t go thru. The salesman apologised and thankfully could still see the rooms we had originally requested. Promised and assured us the payment would go thru this time and our rooms would be reserved, no problems, except that we still hadn’t booked the flights/ accommodation necessary to attend the cruise. Thankfully, a couple of days later we saw a $2000 payment taken from my cc by Celebrity Cruises, but still no email or written confirmation. We patiently wait another week or so, assuming our rooms are confirmed by the deposit we paid, before calling back a third time to see what was going on. Another two hours on the phone trying to speak with a line supervisor, as yet again, there was another problem with our booking. To date, still haven’t spoken with a supervisor, our rooms have still not been confirmed, looks like we’ve been potentially downgraded to ocean view rooms on two separate decks of the ship and the price has gone up!!!! Still no written confirmation, no apologies and just an unbelievable way to try and run a business. Disappointed beyond belief is an understatement 😥

Original Marketed Itinerary is Not what we Got!

Have you ever wonder how drastically Celebrity can change its original marketed itinerary? Legally it can leave the harbor and just sit in international waters for the duration of the cruise and not dock anywhere; so we are told. They don't even have an obligation to follow the original itinerary! My 10 day Celebrity Apex cruise (10/6/23) went to 1 of the 6 days of port stops. Asked why; safety concerns and being cautious. Thanks, that helps. Understand the volatile Western Mediterranean situation but does that include Egypt where others had no issues with? Wondering what management is thinking? Demand is at record highs hence focus on profits versus service! Think twice before cruising on Celebrity! Once on their boat you are captive. I don't cruise to be on a boat for 10 days!

Koffer verloren ...Pech gehabt

On board fabulous however the stress in…

On board fabulous however the stress in dealing with before is a nightmare. Also care when booking onboard, we usually book direct however once booked through iglu. On board we wanted to book a future cruise. As the cruise was two years in future only able to book as cruise only, the colleague even said we can add flights etc nearer the time (we have done this 6 times previously with our bookings). They automatically assigned Iglu saying we can amend this if we wished, now celebrity wont help with anything and Iglu want admin fees to add flights etc as booked as 'cruise only'. Celebrity wont amend the booking so Iglu assume are getting commission for no help at all. Take care with the future cruise teams
