Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Celebrity promise - From Sea to Air We've Got You Covered

• We are Pensioners and booked our cruise on Celebrity Edge to include flights & transfers for reasons of personal safety. • On arrival at Barcelona Airport our transfer to the Port failed to materialise. • We asked for but were refused assistance from Celebrity staff escorting passengers to the Port because our names were not on their passenger list. • We were then targeted and robbed by thieves who recognised our predicament & vulnerability. • We reported the incident to Customer Services Director Princess Mbapee onboard The Edge who because of the seriousness of the offence told us that the matter of recovery would be dealt with by UK shore team on our arrival home. • Its now almost 3 months since the incident happened & Customer Services are not responding to my emails despite me sending regular prompts.

Celebrity Beyond,December 1st -12th.

Celebrity Beyond,December 1st -12th. Well ,cruise around Caribbean was fine ,but do not book excursions from ship as triple the price .Advise to do your own thing when in port ..Travelling in a party of 4 ,my son had an accident while taking part in a pool game ,and ended up with stitches in his head .Total lack of after care or concern by customer relations team .When he demanded a meeting with them ,they basically informed him that they had already had decided he was not "getting any compensation ".He had not asked for compensation !!,he just wanted to make them aware that the particular game was unsafe .By the way this happened on day 2 ,no further repeat of same "game "for remainder of trip . The cleaning staff were lovely ,always polite . Room was spotless ,cleaned every day . Food was ok ,as previously stated ,very much the same ,unless you want to pay for speciality food . Bartenders attentive . It is true that there are a lot of hidden costs if you don't book a drinks package . Shops on board are very expensive ,shoes in port are probably a lot cheaper !!. We enjoyed our cruise ,but the aftercare is woeful if you have a problem .Passenger relations team need re-training !!They were obstructive ,unsympathetic ,and showed no duty of care to my Son . He is fine now ,but God help him if his accident had been more serious .

I will never cruise with Celebrity…

I will never cruise with Celebrity Cruises again. Sailed on the Eclipse September 24th thru October 1, 2023. Our stateroom was filthy. I was looking for and item that I dropped and looked under the bed and saw dirt and dust so thick it was disgusting. We usually order coffee and a pastry in our stateroom for breakfast. The first morning the coffee was very weak. But the pastries were good. The next morning we ordered the same thing. the coffee was weak as usual and the pastry (croissant) was hard as a rock. That was the way is was every morning. Dinner in the main dining room each evening the portions got smaller and smaller. One night I got only one piece of broccoli. The specialty restaurants served good meals as well as the specialty coffee stations. It was our opinion that Celerity Cruise Line encouraged passengers to spend more money every night on specialty dining and scrimped on room and dinning services. Then I got Covid. I consider myself an experienced traveler for many years. I will never book another Celebrity Cruse. It was the worst cruise and dirtiest experience I have ever had.

My first Celebrity cruise we booked 6…

My first Celebrity cruise we booked 6 months in advance to travel three weeks from US to Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Lima Peru and Chile. My complaint is there is several days at sea but the ship has nothing to do very boring. One month before we're ready to set cell they canceled Costa Rica and put us in Ecuador which was a very poor third world country with beggars and people trying to scam us. Nothing to see or do. Guatemala was very boring and nowhere to go as well. Now we are in Lima Peru and very looking forward to getting off the ship but we can't. They schedule 2 other ships and they have priority over our ship even though we paid $30 for a shuttle to get off the ship we are unable to get off. Another day of wasted time. The shows are very second-rate comedy not funny, magic show was boring with old tricks and no sowmanship. We have been on several cruises and this by far is the most unorganized, short staffed, boring cruise. Food is the worst! We are in Lima Peru and can't get of the ship. The cafeteria is closed almost every bar is closed there's no entertainment anywhere. NEVER AGAIN! CARNIVAL PUT THIS SHIP TO SHAME!

Celebriy Infinity from Barcelona Part 2 of 2

We were stunned then gathered ourselves and went back to the desk and asked for help to explain what was going on. The staff at the desk were extremely rude and aggressive and told us that we should go to Terminal 2 due to them having no idea as to which company our flight number belonged to. We struggled with all our suitcases onto a shuttle bus to Terminal 2, a good 20 mins away. We arrived and were told there was no flight from there going to Manchester. We had to reverse the trip to Terminal 1! We were, again, on the phone to Celebrity head office who were confused as to why we were not booked on our flight. They then arranged for us to get a flight on British Airways. We presented at the desk for BA and queued again, time running out causing us immense distress. When we got to the desk they had no record of us there either despite us having a reservation number etc. The member of staff on BA desk looked up the number and told us to go to Vueling. We had to go to their desk after queuing again. They found our reservation and we were so relieved until they stated that we had to pay for our suitcases to go into the hold. We had to pay 180 Euros. We still had to navigate security at this stage. We were not sure that we would make the gate in time and we were running around the airport as the gate was the furthest one away. As luck would have it (oh the irony) the plane was late which gave us time to get to the gate ready for boarding. At last we took off and were so relieved to be going home both of us suffering from a chest infection to boot which we caught due to the air conditioning in our cabin. On arrival at Manchester Airport we went to Terminal 3, we had parked our car at Terminal 2. Yes, you guessed it. We had to handle our suitcases etc. onto a shuttle bus to get to Terminal 2. Exhausted we climbed into our car. If it had not been for the stressful trips there and back we could have put up with the cruise itself by just sitting back and enjoying the scenery and just smile and wave as the saying goes, but sorry Celebrity you have let us down big time!!! A total shambles. Do not travel with Air France! Do not travel with Celebrity! We never shall again. Cunard all the way for us from now on.

Celebriy Infinity from Barcelona Part 1 of 2

Our story started upon booking the Cruise through Iglu Cruises. We were notified that we had direct flights to Barcelona from Manchester (both ways) which we were delighted with until we received a change to flight notification from Celebrity, on the outward flight we now had to change at Paris. Come the morning of departure we left for Manchester at 2am in the morning, our flight was due to leave at 6am. Unfortunately the aircraft had to be de-iced whilst we were onboard which took 15 minutes and that meant we had missed our take off slot and resulted in a 30 minute delay to our flight. We arrived at Charles De Gaulle Airport over an hour later and had to race across the airport to make our connection in just 30 minutes!! We did not make the connection due to the distance across this huge airport and having to go through security again. We rang Celebrity head office to find out what could be done about this. Air France’s customer team said that we could go on the afternoon flight with our arrival time of 5pm one hour after the ship had sailed at 4pm! After much protesting and being joined by 4 other passengers with the same problem they put us on the midday flight. At our revised departure time they announced a Gate change and a later take-off time. It emerged that the original aircraft had broken down and a different aircraft had to be readied instead. We were delayed again by 30 minutes and by my calculations it was going to be touch and go whether we would make the Ship. We were in contact with Celebrity head office again and asked what time the ship would depart and they informed us that the ‘hard close’ for getting on ship was 3.30pm. We landed in Barcelona at 3pm and raced to baggage reclaim which was right next to the exit. We waited and waited for our baggage and were told the machine had broken down. It was now 3.25pm and that meant there was still a 30 minute transfer to the ship through heavy traffic. We were just about to collapse with stress when a Celebrity bus driver appeared. We explained we had been delayed etc. and that we were waiting for our baggage. He disappeared for 5 minutes and then re-appeared and announced that they were holding the Ship for us.....we were so relieved; in 28 previous cruises we had never ever known this. We arrived at the ship and were the last to check in at 4.10pm. The relief was intense after the worst journey of our lives. We had been on this Ship 20 years ago when she was much newer, the first thing we noticed was how tired she had become and desperately was in need of a refit. Our cabin was extremely tired with an unpleasant smell on arrival. We spoke to the cabin attendant who sorted this. The flexi hose to the showerhead was absolutely disgusting covered in black mould. The sink had two cracks in it and the shower curtain hooks were rusty. The coffee table was rusty, the mirrored wall looked smeared and was not cleaned the whole time we were there, 11 days. The carpet had not been fitted, just cut and placed on the floor. I could go on but I think you get the picture. The whole ethos of the cruise was to make money and at no stage did we feel the customer was the priority...what a shame! Internet packages were nearly £300 for the trip and premium drinks packages cost £120 per day for each passenger if sharing a cabin, and non drinks package drinks were astronomical in price $12 for half a pint plus 20% and $14 for a small glass of wine plus service charge and nearly everyone on our table each evening (we had different dinner companions most evenings) did not drink as they could not afford it. Meals were hit and miss in both quality and portion size. Vegetables never cooked properly just washed in boiling water and choice was limited with half of the menu the same each and every time.We then had the hurdle of getting home to navigate. The evening before disembarkation we put our suitcases out. When we went to collect them the next morning ready for our transfer to the airport we could not find one of our cases. It took over an hour to find it by which time our transfer bus had gone but we were taken to the terminal and we were now an hour behind schedule. We arrived at the Air France desk to present for boarding passes. At this point we were told that there was no record of us on Air France and that we should leave the desk.....no help, just total dismissal! All our details that had been on the Air France App disappeared (we had had seat numbers allocated beforehand).

Simply the worst...

Thieves , Vagabonds , Liars and cheats. I had to cancel a Celebrity cruise 2 months ago due to an ill relative. At the time we were told that our unused excursions would be refunded within 2 weeks. It's now 2 months later, many many phone calls. 3 promises that the money would be refunded straight away, many emails unanswered. Many promises of a call from a supervisor not fulfilled, a totally non existent customer service ethic. ... And I still have not got my money back. Now 2 weeks before Christmas they still have hundreds of pounds of my money that they have not returned and appear to have done nothing to put it right. This is a level of service you would expect from your local pound shop or ryanair .. but this is a company that sells an image of a premium product and charges very premium prices. I have never come across a company before that just takes your money and ignores you when you ask for your own money to be rightfully refunded. Premium prices.... Definitely... Premium Service.... You must be joking!

Scam competition When you win a competition on the…

When you win a competition on the cruise they refuse to give the prize, you just don't get it, they give you an American number to ring they put you on hold until you have to hang up because of the cost and even when you get to talk to them they won't let you book the cruise you won. These competitions all have a charge to enter so it is a complete scam. I would love for anyone going on this cruise to ask about this scam because that's what it is.

Amazed by the poor reviews here

Amazed by the poor reviews here. Have they actually been on any cruises? We have been on 3 cruises with Celebrity and all were superb. I cannot think of any thing bad about the ships or experience, with beautiful ships, friendly staff, excellent entertainment, facilities, staterooms, food etc. I would really recommend Celebrity as being a top notch cruising experience. My wife prefers Celebrity over Cunard now for our number one company to book a cruise with.

Their customer service in non-existant

Their customer service is non-existant. I've been on holdr over 47 minutes after entering the "call-back" line- only to not get a customer service supervisor as requested. When I again requested supervisor - gal said absolutely nothing and my clock on my phone is approaching 60 minutes on hold. Oh! Joy at exactly 57 minutes the call disconnected. Starting over again...will never book on this cruiseline again.
