This company is a scam. They ask for ridiculous fees for an extra insurance do not use their services.
We went through a 3rd party reservation for car rental. Our flight was 2 hours delayed due weather and airport shut down, which made us late to Routes car rental. We did not have an easy walk through at first as we got to Routes car rental as other charges were not included due to going through 3rd party reservation and policies were not noted. I thought we were going direct to Routes. Anyway there were many things I needed in order to keep pricing what it should be. Thanks to the excellent customer service at Routes, everything was taken care of. Yes, we are going back in April to Routes but this time made the reservation directly to Routes. With all that said, luckily we did go 3rd party as we found a new place for all our future car rentals, at Routes! Thank you!
Good car rate with best customer service.
The online price is a bait and switch. Also, the currency exchange rate this company uses is 15% higher than any other merchant we dealt with in San Jose Del Cabo. I reserved the car for $4/day for seven days. When I arrived they said I needed to purchase "protection", which is their terminology for car insurance. The protection price was quoted in US dollars at $40/day. This is obviously ten times the daily rental rate of the car. The bigger issue came in when they converted the $40/day from dollars to pesos. The rate (after three different taxes and fees were applied) quickly became nearly $60/day. When I asked to pay in US dollars they alleged they were not able to charge my card in dollars since I was in Mexico (my VISA company would have then used the standard daily conversion rate). They were not being honest when they said this could only charge my card in pesos. 100's of other merchants in Mexico are able to charge in USD. The conversion rate they pulled out of thin air jacked the price up another $7/day. My $28 car (which was in rough shape) ended up being a $439 car. They also insisted I could only use premium gas in the car. Given this was not a high end car by any means, I think this was false, but I did it just in case (more extra dollars).
I am responding to Routes response to my initial complaint (see their response below). Unfortunately, Routes response is unhelpful since I contacted their customer service PRIOR to writing my review and was told that they wouldn't do anything because I signed a contract agreeing to the SunPass charges. What Routes customer service in India doesn't seem to understand is that the contract was signed based on false information provided by the Routes representative. I have now filed a complaint with the Florida State Attorney General's office so that office can look into what appears to be a pattern of fraudulent practices by Routes. Nice service, good car. No surprises, everything went as expected.
Did not appreciate that Routes Car Rental upcharged $10.99/day for a "border crossing fee". We were traveling JUST over the border into WI, where the traffic is less than the Chicago area, and the vehicle was safe Renting from an International Airport, I am sure that most renters were not going to stay in IL the entire rental period. We stood outside in the COLD waiting for the shuttle at the Airport for 30 minutes; tracker did not work, as it said 15 minutes out the entire time. Driver was rude. There was nothing that would encourage us to rent from Routes again. With the BCF, your rates were higher than other National Companies.
I have a round trip out of ord Illinois, according to your policy I can rent with proof of travel. The lady at the counter said I could not rent because I was an Illinois resident, she didn't have the courtesy to explain the situation simply stated to call customer service and offered other car rentals. Disappointed being that the policy said I could.
Booked and paid for rental. When showed up, was told cannot rent to Illinois residence only people that flown in. On top of that was told since you prepaid there is zero refund. Multiple other people standing around with the same issue

Used this car rental. Wont ever again. Unable to make changes online ask was advertised. Could not pay tolls as the plate on the car was wrong and have been back and forth with the company who just repeats what the charge is but refuses to discuss the wrong plate issue. Told drop off place about it too and got nowhere. Never again. Ps. I have contacted them several times with my information and get a response that refuses to address the problem. I have begged to be able to talk with someone, but just get the same response. Here is the bill and that's it.
The music in the building is so LOUD that no one can concentrate on what the employee is saying. I had to ask her to repeat herself every time she spoke and finally asked her to turn down the volume on the music. This is supposed to be a business, not a dance club. I was heavily coerced into taking a more expensive car. Not a good experience.
