** Avoid Rental Car Canada (Montreal), and Trip..com The contract is riddled with abuses: imposed vehicle, limited mileage despite an unlimited contract, crossing provincial borders despite a national border contract, threats of penalties, and a security deposit taken and never refunded. Hidden fees, bad faith, bogus excuses, and 50 ignored emails. Over 5,000 negative reviews and more than 500 complaints = a dishonest company that ruins your vacation. I would like to remind you that European and Canadian case law regarding ruined holidays (Article L211-16 of the Tourism Code, contractual liability, moral and financial damages) expressly reserves the right to award damages as soon as the contract is not respected and the stay is ruined. I continue to publicly denounce their practices and invite any victims to contact me so we can take action together.
Terrible customer service. Hidden taxes and fees totalling $173 USD. After a 90-minute wait at the Denver Airport ROUTES counter, they added taxes and fees, in spite of the fact the EXPEDIA rental agreement said all taxes and fees were included in what I paid Expedia up front. Their customer service follow up has been a lesson in excuses and deflection.
If I could give zero stars, I certainly would have. My flight from Philadelphia to Houston took less time than it took to get my rental car. They are not located at the car rental facility, so the ordeal started by wasting my time heading there only to find out that I needed to return to the airport to wait for their shuttle. they share their shuttle with numerous other smaller hotels, and my wait for the shuttle was over 2 hours. I reached out to customer service multiple time trying to get an update on the shuttles arrival, and was told numerous times that it should be there in 15 minutes and that they were made aware that I was waiting. I was then taken to what appeared to be a small used car lot and entered a small booth to virtually speak to someone off-site about the rental. I had to provide proof of insurance, and then was told that there was a processing fee to validate the information that i just spent 30 minutes providing them which was the equivalent of an additional day's rental. When it told them that the vehicle had already bee paid for when booked with Priceline, they told me that it had not and processed a payment. Now I am fighting with them to get a refund from having been double billed. If they were to offer me a free rental in the future as compensation for the hassle, I wouldn't take it. I told Priceline that they should be embarrassed to even have a relationship with this car rental company.
Don't use them. I will never use them. They offer cheaper price but its scam, They have no cancelation no change policy, I made mistake on the date of my reservation and when I realized that I made a mistake and called back to change my date they said they cant do it, even though the reservation was for 2 weeks after. They have the worst customer service ever. They took my money for a future reservation, and they refuse to change it or cancel it. I would never use them. I do not recommend a rental from the Orlando Routes Car Rental as they do not keep their word. On April 17, 2025, I rented a vehicle from their Orlando location and drove to my final destination in Sarasota, Florida. Shortly after departure, I experienced a significant drop in tire pressure that required me to stop at a gas station late at night to refill the tire. Although the tire appeared fine when I left the lot, it is possible it had been recently refilled by a technician prior to my rental. Because I was staying in Sarasota, returning to Orlando (approximately 136 miles away) on a compromised tire was not a safe option. A Routes Car Rentals representative advised me by phone to take the vehicle to a local repair facility for inspection and to submit the receipt for reimbursement. Upon inspection, Tire Kingdom determined that the tire could not be safely repaired due to the location of the nail and strongly advised against driving back to Orlando. To ensure my safety and that of others, I authorized a replacement tire at a cost of $121.36. I have submitted this receipt on multiple occasions as instructed. Despite multiple follow-ups via email on May 4, September 8, September 12, September 20, October 24, and October 25, 2025, I have received only two identical generic responses that did not address my specific concern or the reimbursement request. Given the circumstances and the guidance I received from a Routes Car Rental representative, I have respectfully requested reimbursement (six times now) of $121.36 for the tire replacement expense and only received in return, two identical generic responses telling me I should have returned to Orlando for another vehicle.
I had rented a car at Routes, since they were the cheapest option and I am a student without that much money. When I went to pick up the car, the rental company would not complete the rental because I had no physical credit card (I had the physical one deactivated a couple days earlier, and my new one had not arrived by mail, however I still had all information on the new card and had already begun using it to pay, so I was fully able to pay or secure the deposit). After being rejected, I asked to please have my original payment (that I paid through Expedia) refunded since I was not going to be able to rent a car from Routes. The secretary said that this was no problem, promised me a refund and confirmed that she had left a note for Expedia, letting them know that I was of course eligible for a refund. Relieved, although a bit annoyed that the rental fell through, I walked over to Hertz and rented a car (super easily, may I add, without any extra fees incurred like at this scamming company) using my credit card on my phone, and proceeded on with my vacation. However, upon returning home and starting a refund case with Expedia, they told me that no note was left for them about a refund. They even contacted Routes for me, who then refused to refunding anything and saying that they didn't think they should refund me FOR A CAR I NEVER DROVE! TL:DR this company lives off of scamming customers, incurring extra fees for EVERYTHING and creating these minor company policies that catches poor people looking for a cheap solution in a trap where they lose money. Just go with a reliable rental service, and don't get scammed out of 200 CAD like me...
Reserved from Routes (in Calgary) specifically to get “Winter tires. Paid extra for them. Got to the counter in Calgary and was told no cars have Winter tires. Note: The Canadian national parks require Winter tires after November 1st. So, not legal to drive the Icefields Parkway from Banff to Jasper. Also, was informed at the counter, that in spite of unlimited mileage, there is a $30 per day surcharge for traveling outside the province of Alberta, and this charge is automatically applied through some gps unit on the car.
Absolutely the worst experience as this place wanted to charge me a $500 deposit - be aware they don’t accept a credit /debit card so make sure you read the small print! I’ve never experienced renting a car without using my credit/debit card! We were stranded for hours. I will Never use them again and only use the car rentals I’m familiar with !
I want to share my experience with Routes Car Rental to help other travelers make an informed decision. Routes appears cheaper than major rental companies at first glance, especially when booking through Expedia, Booking.com, or Priceline. However, behind the low advertised rates, there are hidden fees, poor customer service, and questionable billing practices that customers — especially international travelers — should be aware of. 🚗 Hidden Costs and Excessive Charges Routes tends to upsell expensive car insurance (CDW) even if you already have valid coverage through your own provider or credit card. If you refuse, they may delay your service or make it difficult to continue with your booking until you purchase their insurance. They also hold an unusually high security deposit (in my case, $1,500 USD) without clearly disclosing this amount at the time of booking. Later, when you return the car, they may charge your card for excessive damage fees. I was billed $1,800 for a small dent that required minimal repair, plus an additional $200 “administration fee” — far above industry standards. 🌍 Unclear Border Crossing Policy Routes charged me a $500 border crossing fee for a single day out of province. When I disputed it, I was told the charge applied to the entire rental period, not the actual travel days. Even worse, the company later updated its policy online after the dispute to justify the charge. 🧾 Lack of Transparency Their rental contract is not openly shared before signing, leaving many terms unclear. Key charges and policies are only revealed later, often when it’s too late to cancel without penalty. 😞 Customer Service Issues Local renters are not their preferred customers — Routes mainly targets tourists. Once your rental is in progress, their staff rarely assist if issues arise. Calls and complaints are often ignored, and any help with vehicle problems or billing concerns is minimal. ⚠️ Final Thoughts Routes Car Rental may seem cheap initially, but they often make up the difference by adding hidden fees, inflated repair costs, and unnecessary insurance charges. If you’re a traveler or renting in a different country, be very cautious. Review all documents carefully, take photos of the car from all angles before and after, and be prepared for unexpected charges. In my opinion, it’s safer to rent from a more transparent and reputable company, even if it costs slightly more.
Total scammers! Avoid this company at all costs; all they want is access to your credit card. They change the rental conditions you originally agreed to when making your reservation and do not provide proper paperwork. Instead, they rush you through an electronic agreement on an iPad, leaving you with no clear or printed record of what you’re signing. Then, a few days after you return the car, they slap extra charges on your credit card for completely nonsense reasons: such as allegedly leaving the state or province, exceeding 200 km per day (even though the booking clearly states unlimited mileage), or by adding unwanted “insurance coverage.” In my case, they charged me for additional insurance even though I explicitly at the time of pickup showed them proof that my credit card already provides rental car insurance coverage. This company’s practices are dishonest and predatory. Don’t be fooled by low prices or promotional offers, even if they offered a car for free, it wouldn’t be worth the headache, all they want is to have access to your credit card.
Stop, Listen, they are a legit company. But their business practices are fraud. This is my experience. Rented thru Priceline, quoted 12 per day. I paid the rental thru Priceline at time I made rental reservation. $110 dollars. When I arrived, I was offered toll transponder with two options. 9.99 per day and another option 16 per day. I declined both. Next the deposit, I was offered 2 options. One I pay 250.00 deposit and also 124.00 fee that I would not get back. The other option was a 700.00 deposit, But I don't get 49.99 back. So regardless they add money to the daily rental. Try to find that info in any documnets prior to rental. It's not there. They are not forth coming with the info untill time of pickup. the car I was renting for 110.00 total came out to be 234.00 after they added the 124.00. Scam, I am reporting them and doing everything in my legal power to inform everyone.
Hidden fees. They will not tell you what the charges. i was not issued a receipt of my rental days.
My flight to Ottawa was delayed by several hours. I was assured by an associate when I called that they could hold my car until my new arrival time. When I arrived, there was no record of the conversation and I was told that they had given my car to someone else and they had no more. Bad enough...but I went online to see what I could find, Routes was advertising that they had (regular) cars for around $750/day. So they did have cars, just wanting to pray on the desperate. I went with another, more reputable company needless to say. My Routes fee of $350.00 was not refunded, and I spent $900 on a car from a different company. I am not at all impressed with Routes.
Randell help us get through our process quick and easy you guys should definitely give him a raise!
I rented a car from Routes Rental Car in Denver/Colorado. When I returned the vehicle, I asked for a receipt. The attendant told me everything was fine and that the receipt would be emailed. I trusted that verbal confirmation and left. Days later, I received an invoice claiming the tank was only 7/8 full and charging me for fuel and a refueling fee. I had no way to dispute it because I wasn’t given a receipt at return and didn’t take photos—because their staff told me I was “all set.” I disputed the charge, but Routes upheld it without acknowledging their flawed return process. I’ve paid the charge under protest, but I want others to know: get everything in writing, take photos, and don’t trust verbal assurances. This experience felt like a setup—no receipt, no evidence, and then a retroactive charge. I won’t rent from Routes again, and I urge others to be cautious.
Bad service, the pick up address is not clear, customers can not cancel the service online

To Whom It May Concern, On 27 September 2025, I rented a car from Routes Car Rental at Casablanca Airport (CMN) via Wisecars. My credit-card insurance certificate had been pre-approved by Routes’ UK office as sufficient coverage, so no additional insurance or non-refundable deductible was required. At the off-airport desk: The staff claimed my pre-approved credit card was repeatedly declined when trying to place the standard refundable deposit (16,000 MAD). My bank (RBC Canada) confirmed no such transactions were ever received or declined (call on 10 Sep 2025 with RBC VISA, reference Lumi at 08:34 AM). After two hours of delays, I was forced to pay a non-refundable 880 MAD (~150 CAD) “daily deductible” on a different card as the only way to get the vehicle. Staff showed unprofessional behaviour (asking me to leave during their lunch break, poor English, arbitrary card restrictions) while other customers were processed normally. I believe the alleged “declined” second deposit of 7,000 MAD was never attempted and was a deliberate tactic to coerce the extra 880 MAD payment. I request: Immediate full refund of the 880 MAD (~150 CAD) coerced non-refundable fee.
HORRIBLE company that scams customers. I am warning you not to use this company. It may seem cheap when you are booking but trust me, it is not worth the price after they gauge you at the desk when you pick up the rental. A rental that was supposed to cost under $200 ended up costing me over $800. They shuttle you to their location from the airport to the middle of nowhere so your then stuck and tired from travel. When I got to the counter, I showed my proof of insurance which includes Endorsement 27 (the one they said they required) They told me at the counter they read my insurance line for line with their supervisor and that it is not covered. They said because they know what the Canadian dollar is like (compared to US) so therefore they will only make me purchase the Collision Damage Waver (CDW) without the Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI). It is all a scam! They are trying to make you believe they are doing you a favor. I bought it, as I was told I really had no choice. Then the same day I called my company who clearly explained that I am fully insured in the US as I am in Canada for rentals. I emailed and showed them the proof of this highlighting the part of my contract that clearly spells this out. They continued to email me back saying the SAME thing. "My personal auto insurance does not extend to rental vehicles" and "We appreciate your confirmation that you understand the limitations of your personal policy for this rental and that you agree to the CDW" It was like a generic message every time, trying to put words in my mouth. I have since reviewed this company extensively and note that all the same terrible reviews are similar. I am warning you, if you want to rent a vehicle go with a reputable company not Routes.

Many customers report feeling scammed due to unexpected charges and a lack of clarity regarding insurance and deposit requirements. The shuttle service also garners criticism for long wait times, contributing to a negative rental experience. While some appreciate the lower prices compared to major companies, the overall sentiment is marred by complaints about the company's business practices. Consequently, potential renters are advised to exercise caution when considering Routes Car Rental.
