Review summary
IDrive Online Backup receives consistently positive reviews. Customers particularly appreciate service and reliable, though some mention concerns about customer service and communication.
I have been using iDrive for several years to backup our desktop and laptop PC. I have generally been quite happy with the product until now.
Seven weeks ago iDrive started failing during online backup of one particular 256MB file. After many interactions with support they referred it to their "backend team". There has been no progress and not a word. I ping them every week and get the same response.
I've had to resort to a local backup which I then copy to Google Drive. I will note that this is about 20X faster than IDrive online backup.
I have only begun using iDrive. I have used other backup systems which seemed confusing to me so that I was never sure I was doing it correctly. So far, I like iDrive because it has a user-friendly interface for someone not really computer-savvy. I can back up to my external hard drive as well as the cloud, both backups can be accessed readily. I can backup on demand or on a pre-selected schedule. I have not yet tried the restore function. I have not yet made a mirror image of my computer, but to back up all my personal data took about 3 hours. Incremental backups take a few minutes. So far I am happy and have recommended iDrive to two people in my life.
I got a great introductory offer and the software is more user friendly than the Acronis package I replaced it with.
Understandably, the first full backup took a long time. But the second was completed in just five minutes as only amended or new files were needed.
I have been using idrive on MAC for 3 years now. However, since last year I am finding that folders suddenly appear empty. It can usually be fixed by customer support, but no logic is provide for this.
I can't be sure that a file I need will be there with Idrive. Very disappointing.
Update: they finally told me that the problem was due to the use of special characters in some of my folders. Supposedly a solution is coming, but no date was given. I have removed special characters like “ñ” from my folders. Let’s see what happens.
On another point IDrive does not automatically backup your cloud drive folder. You need to ask support how to do it. Which is not very user friendly🤦
It seems easy to set up initially, but if you do not have a standard drive/directory structure it can be more of a pain. Restoring tends to mess up directory structures or cause duplicates if you restore to a different computer (i.e. after an upgrade). But the biggest hassle I have found is that I am forever getting 'unable to complete' messages because there has been a network or VPN break during back-up. This is a complete pain - why on earth does it not automatically restart the process if there is an interruption, or better, restart from the last complete file? Could do better. I doubt I will stay with this service.
iDrive has been a good backup and restore option for me.
Have been using iDrive for around 4 years now.
Sure there are issues from time to time that take time to resolve and for those of us in the UK who do not have super fast gigabit fibre internet (and I am one of the people who doesn't even though I live in the metropolis of London) it can be a laborious process to upload/download data, but on the whole iDrive provides a reliable backup and restore option at competitive prices.
It is a pity that their iDrive Express service (to backup/restore masses of data) is no longer available for UK and European customers as that would avoid many of the problems reviewers have mentioned regarding time taken to backup data but once it is on their servers at least I know I have a reliable service I can depend on.
Hopefully gigabit internet connection will solve the performance niggle soon or in the absence of faster internet iDrive will restore the iDrive service for those of us who live in the backwaters of UK/Europe.
Update ( 20/05/2025) on transferring 4TB data via a copy of the data on an external hard drive.
I am changing my review from 4* to 5* as my 4+ TB of data has now been successfully transferred and uploaded. As usual when attempting things remotely things do not always go to plan. Needless to say iDrive rose to the challenge admirably and worked tirelessly to address all issues (some which seemed insurmountable at the time) to a successful completion. I must say that this is unusual in today's fast paced IT industry and I am very grateful to them for all their help and support. It was truly outstanding. Just saying "Thank You!" does not cut it. iDrive staff were absolutely stupendous!!
I will always remain grateful for what iDrive has done and will remain with them through thick and thin.
Extremely unreliable cloud service with a very bad app.
In July 2023 I tried IDrive but didn't like this application. So, I put all my backup files in the trash and removed this application.
Now, 20 months later I decided to try this application again. Perhaps due to an update I'll like it now.
To my astonishment all my files from 20 months ago are still in the trash. But there's a notice: "Files that have been in Trash for more than 30 days will be automatically deleted".
I have 1590 files in trash but I can't delete them. If I select all files and click on 'Empty Trash' I get a message "Are you sure you want to empty trash?". I click on "Yes". The next screen shows "No files in Trash" but when I go back to 'Deleted Backup files' in 'Trash' all files are still there. I tried it many times two years ago and also now again.
Files in Trash should not count to storage space but my free account shows "You have utilized the allocated storage space" while I have no files backed up at the moment. Only my Trash is full and can't be emptied.
So, where are my deleted files if I have deleted all files and don't see any files in my storage? The message says that I have utilized my allocated storage space but my storage space in the application and website is 100% empty. If my files still remain on the IDrive server but don't show up on the IDrive application and website it means there's something completely wrong with this application. It's scary if you can't trust your personal files to a third party (in this case IDrive) and you have no idea what they are doing with your personal files. Do they still keep your files on their server or is something wrong with the application or website???
On major review sites such as TechRadar, PCMag, Macworld, Cloudwards, Tom's Guide, etc. IDrive has been listed for many years as the number one Cloud backup service. But when we check Trustpilot it seems that IDrive gets an extremely bad score of only 3.3.
So, who do we trust? Reviews of so-called neutral review sites or independent users? Of course we trust users.
A clear example that we can trust these so-called neutral review sites.
From my personal experience I can only say that IDrive doesn't work. I strongly suggest not to use this backup service to backup your personal files. You can't rely on this service.
It's one of the cheapest available but you get what you pay for. The price is very low but the reliability is even lower.
They started charging VAT without warning properly. WHen contacted referred to some small letter conditions no one would ever see. Their Price page does not mention they might charge VAT
I had a good experience with iDrive. Their customer service is responsive and helpful.
I forgot to cancel my subscription but they were kind enough to proceed my late request and refund the money.
My account was canceled due to expired credit card. When I updated my card they billed me but did not reactivate my account. I tried support but the billing support is only available 12 hours. When they are working they are too busy to answer. Otherwise I just have to leave a message. Chat support and phone tech support could not help me because they said it was a billing issue. I have been waiting for them to resolve the issue with no results. Customer support for billing issues is basically non existent.
My account was cancelled at anniversary with no warning - auto renew did not happen as the payment card account was no longer in use.
Instead of contacting me to rectify this before it became an issue the account was locked with no login access to my account to review & revise the subscription.
I have moved on to a new provider
Two Slow to be useful.
My Home internet connection is a 1GB fibre connection. iDrive was just too slow even over that to be useful, taking many many weeks to backup a couple of TB of data . I did contact iDrive support and there suggestions made no difference at all to the backup rate.
