Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

fantastic cruise

Just got back from a great Alaska cruise on Celebrity Infinity and it was absolutely fantastic. The staff all over the ship is doing a very great job to keep you happy and are always very kind to you. The food on the ship is amacing both in the restaurant and on the 10th floor, We had the same waiters every evening in the restaurant and they will do anything to make you feel the best. 3 courses every night and everything was gourmet food, fantastic. Great great staff. Just one complain and that is the prices on the tours you can buy on board the ship, they are extremely expensive !!!! So wait until you are ashore and buy your tours by the locals, only half price for the very same trips. We had a very great and amazing week on board. The reason for no giving 5 stars is the price on the tours ashore we did get an email afterwards and have answered it with lots of stars :-)

JET SET FAIL.

JET SET FAIL. Celebrity Cruises don't seem to care about their customers reading these reviews...and that has been my experience too. My dream was to sail out of Venice on a luxury Cruise Ship so when I saw the 'Jet Set Sail VIP Luxury Fly/Cruise' direct from Belfast to Venice I booked it. 7th July started out with much excitment, a Private Jet direct to Venice to join our Luxury Cruise. Arrived 7am at airport to be told there was a slight delay to our 9am departure. Next announcement, our plane had broken down in Lourdes (how ironic!) and they were trying to get another plane. Next announcement and the most heart breaking, we would not be joining the Cruise ship in Venice we would be flown to Dubrovnik later that day to join the cruise ship the next day. My dream of sailing out of Venice was gone..my main reason for booking this Cruise. Next announcement flight will depart 15.15pm. We sat in the departure area of the airport (no special Jet Set Sail VIP lounge for us) and we watched the departure change time and time again until eventually our departure time was  4.30pm. We were all tired and hungry by now as most passengers did not have lunch preferring to wait for their 2 course meal with drinks on board our Private jet.  While waiting we tried to lift our morals joking with each other  'we will be fine after our first G & T on the flight' 5pm weary and tired we boarded the aircraft 8 hours later than our 9am 'slight delay' flight Next announcement on board our Private Jet 'THERE WILL BE NO FOOD OR DRINKS SERVED ON THIS FLIGHT' we all looked at each other in disbelief this was then confirmed as we watched Oasis Travel staff bring on bottles of water, boxes of potato crisps and chocolate bars. 8hrs we had waited on our flight and Celebrity decided to send it without any food or.drinks on board!!! This is all we were to have for the  next three hours, water and Crisps...some VIP flight. Next announcement 'There are sandwiches available but it is one packet between two passengers.' !!! We never even got a sandwich as they ran out! Could this day get any worse...yes. Arrived in Dubrovnik late evening collected our suitcases and no one was there to advise where to go. So the 130 passengers decided to clear customs and we waited in the arrivals area looking like list souls. We were eventually joined by an Oasis travel agent who told us to go out to the car park where 4 buses were waiting. We were herded into the car park where a man with a clip board was shouting out 'I want 10 X 2 couples onto bus 1, 20 X 2s and 3s on bus 2 etc' no passengers names were called out and asked to board their bus in an orderly manner. Passengers were rushing onto the buses with their suitcases not knowing where they were going. Once onboard our bus the Oasis Travel Agent got on and asked us where we were going! She then counted the passengers and left the bus with a wave shouting back 'there will be a meal and drinks waiting for you at the hotel' and we never saw the Travel Agents again. Arrived at the hotel asked where the meal was being served and were told in our rooms. Got to the room, no food, we were so hungry, called the hotel who said it was on it's way to the room. When it arrived it was a small.plate of cold meat and cheese..no drinks, we were told we had to pay for our own. It was now midnight too late and too tired to go out for a meal. My dream had turned into a nightmare. We complained on board to the Manager of Celebrity Constellation to be told we had to take our complaint to Oasis Travel Agent. Got home and took our complaint to the Travel Agent to be told it was not their responsibility we had to complain to Celebrity Cruises!! And so the ping pong game of complaint responsibility began. I finally wrote to Celebrity UK stating I felt I been treated appallingly by Celebrity Celebritys final reply 'if you are not happy with our response you can take your complaint to ABTA' We have all been extremely let down, disappointed, expectations crushed by Celebrity Cruises.

So it was to be our Honeymoon and a…

So it was to be our Honeymoon and a trip of a life time. We have never been on a cruise before but were tempted by a Celebrity Cruise on a VIP package Jet Sail. A private Jet from London Stansted to Barcelona, a trip round the Med and Adriatic followed by a Private jet back from Venice. Not cheap for sure but this was our special week. We departed the UK on the 30th June 2018 and boarded the Celebrity Constellation the same day. The cruise was great the outbound service was lovely no queuing at a busy airport we and I guess 70 passengers travelled in style. Could get used to this. But our return journey was to be a nightmare! We departed the boat along with those on the flight back to the UK escorted to Venice airport by the local reps. A delay was posted and then nothing until just before boarding and then our flight was posted as delayed till early evening and then ultimately cancelled. Local reps when they appeared were completely useless and chaos enthused. Eventually told we would depart some hours later and then nothing. In fact we would spend nearly 10 hours in Venice airport with almost no info herded like cattle and not even the offer of a drink of water. There were quite a few elderly and infirm on our trip we were all treated with contempt. Eventually the virtually useless local reps gathered us all up and transported us to a hotel a long way outside Venice. Food of a very poor standard was rushed together and we awaited news. None was forthcoming that night. We made our own arrangements with our agents to get home having given up on anyone from Celebrity taking control. We eventually flew home with others off our cruise to a completely different London Airport and had to trek across town back to our departure point to pick up our car. We booked a Jet Sail it was intended to be special Celebrity treated us and the over 50 other British passengers with disdain. There is every reason to believe they knew full well our flight was not coming as planned when we departed the ship but they happily dumped us at the airport. We got home 25hrs late missing a family party and totally shattered. To make matters worse they have blamed the jet charter company who have offered comp the same as if we had got Ryan Air! Buyer beware VIP ends at the Pier!

Badly let down by Celebrity Cruise

Badly let down by Celebrity Cruises that left Buenos Aires for Antarctica on 21 January 2018. The morning we were leaving England for the airport we were informed by our Travel Agent that we were not going to stop at Puerto Madryn on the Infinity sailing with Celebrity Cruises. Just like many other passengers on this sailing, we were not given the courtesy of a decent reply to our correspondence or any kind of apology. 12 days at sea was a nightmare. Stopping only 1 day and 1evening. Only given a minimum payment for a missed port. There were many other disappointments during the cruise. Celebrity management on the ship appeared to be indifferent to complaints and appeared disorganized when we returned to the ship for our back to back cruise losing or failing to find room keys for our adjacent cabin, taking 45 mins for replacements to be produced. We have been on many cruises before but never had there been so much to complain about and the Infinity Customer Services has been the worst. It was supposed to be our holiday of a lifetime. Celebrity Cruises need to compensate and value their clients.

Lets down customers and does not respond to issues or complaints.

Let down customers on January Antartic cruise. Ignoring letters of complaint for ruined holidays. Find another company that addresses and accepts responsibility if a cruise goes bad due to mechanical issues.

Antarctica January 21st 2018 FAILURE

Looking forward to this one after booking over 12months in advance with a few days in BA first. Move on in time few days before we go email arrives (Houston we have a problem) Itinerary has been altered from 4 stops to 3, Falklands pushed back a day Ushuaia a bit later in the day and P. Madryn dropped, cause faulty propulsion but gong ahead at reduced speed until they can repair it at our cost and the only option is a repayment of 1/14 of the cost of the cruise. Actually arrived at Ushuaia and disembarked 17:00 to do the Garibaldi Pass tour, back on board 23:15 dark after 20:00 but just yo say we had the required shore time they stayed until 02:00 great. Saw Antarctica yes great now we are off to see penguins on Falklands but we are told bad weather ahead, been before so know the lay of it and have a sneaking suspicion it will not happen, some how he keeps going that way instead of diverting and giving us P. Madryn stop but no he is time wasting to the point neither is an option, only one thing left go to Montevideo not what you really want from an Antarctica and Penguins cruise. To be fair the crew really had to work hard to keep us entertained and passengers were not happy when Stanley was missed so in so instances they must have felt the brunt of it. That could have been avoided by an announcement from our alleged Captain with some thing from Celebrity but no and to this day with people complaining nothing even when a group had a meeting regarding it they were going to lock 2 passengers in there cabin. With the original itinerary we were happy to book under the new one I would never have booked it. 4 stops original what we got was 1 in day time and (1 evening and night). No compensation was given for the Falklands because it was stormy yet had we been there on the contracted day (which we Booked under) it was good weather. We actually had a Cruise Critic meeting on board which members of staff attended including THE Captain but they were going round questions put to them and we never got straight answers. They made it quite clear after when contacted they will make no compensation so contacted my tour agent and it cost us for 2 persons £1000.00 to cancel the September cruise on Summit out of NY and will never sail with Celebrity or any of the company group again. My suggestion to the company is sack the Captain and hire Captain Jack Sparrow with his wooden compass, he has a better chance of finding land. If you are thinking of booking remember it may go all but if it does not this is the treatment you get unless it seems you are departing U.S Ports as on previous Propulsion problems (over 40) the Coast Guard will not let it sail. Could be wrong but seems that way than they have to cancel and refund. Not got the option of NO STARS

ANTARCTIC CRUISE JANUARY 2018

ANTARCTIC CRUISE JANUARY 2018 Celebrity Infinity, Celebrity cancelled Port Madryn 4 days prior to our departure from Australia, saying the ship had a propulsion problem and that this would not affect the rest of the cruise. WELL IT DID, arrived Ushuaia at 5pm, expensive shore excursion was rushed and finished in the dark, upon our return, Ushuaia was closed down. Cancelled Port Stanley, Celebrity said due to weather, the weather was excellent on the day were were supposed to arrive however we were a day plus late due to propulsion issue. Of course Celebrity blamed the weather! Celebrity did not deliver what was advertised, the only port, out of 4 we had the full day was Montevideo, not exactly the Antarctic experience we had paid for and looked forward to! Shame on you Celebrity for the disgusting way you have treated your loyal customers, you simply don’t care, never again!
