Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Servizio 10/10

Servizio 10/10 , ottimo cibo e tutti servizi . Personale gentilissimo.

AWFUL customer service

Celebrity call themselves a luxury cruise company but there is nothing luxury about them when it comes to customer service. The entire experience from booking to adding on excursions to dealing with Covid related complications has been a nightmare, and not worth it. I would not recommend. Impossible to get hold of anyone, each phone number passes you from one department to the next, if you do finally speak to someone then you get different information depending on who you speak to and incorrect information. There are no processes in place. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Buyer beware - hidden costs and expensive extras

The ship itself was good; staff worked very hard cleaning everything in sight, frequently. We only ate in the OceanView buffet restaurant - most other restaurants onboard cost extra. The food there was plentiful and good quality, decent choices including a couple of themed nights and Asian, European and American cuisine - no complaints. Buffet food is never really piping hot but that's expected. We chose a west Mediterranean tour including Palma and Toulon as the listed destinations. But at Palma the ship was docked a good distance from Palma centre and we had to pay an extra 30 euros for a shuttle bus. This wasn't notified in advance. A local taxi from the pier may have been cheaper - check first, 10 euros per person might have cost more than a local taxi. When we arrived in "Toulon" I discovered we were not actually in Toulon. We were around 10 km away by road from Toulon in a small port - La Seyne-sur-mer. Nothing of interest there. I asked Guest Relations staff why we were not in Toulon and the desk person told me that to get to Toulon, Celebrity offered guests a sea shuttle, priced at $20 per person! This wasn't notified in advance and I was angry because I'd expected that the ship would have docked in Toulon port. Toulon is on the stated itinerary - not La Seyne. I was misled. So be warned - getting to Palma old town and Toulon costs an extra $30 dollars per person. Our "all-inc" drinks "Classic" package only applies to a choice of wines, spirits and beers under $9. There was enough choice for us but take care to choose the right brands - you could easily pick one not listed on the package and incur an extra service charge. This applies to the small mini-bar in the room - a bottle of Evian still water was $8, small Pringles $3 - a half bottle of wine extra $24 - no kidding - (and perhaps + 18% service added to that too?) - so be careful not to buy from the mini-bar - it's extortionate. And why do guests have to pay ridiculous extra costs for a mini-bar when we've already paid to have drinks included? It's a complete rip-off - I felt cheated. We discovered that "free wifi" only means basic. Texts or emails only. You can't surf the internet as we'd expected - unless you upgrade, costing an extra $349. That may well be per person knowing Celebrity's drip-drip extra pricing tricks. The silent disco was fun and there were the usual options for entertainment and activities onboard - pub quizzes, music, deck games, wine tasting (extra cost) and the like. Our room (6004) was OK except for the horrible not very efficient basic shower curtain - large double bed and sofa-bed for our daughter - but "ocean view" actually meant a view of the helicopter pad. If you stretch the sea was visible - just! I didn't like the cheap shower curtain - especially considering the fancy steel/chrome and glass fittings in most other areas of the ship like the sleek expensive shopping arcade & art rooms. My family felt short-changed, misled and overcharged. Not good value for money. I wouldn't book with Celebrity again.

Celebrity Cruises is lacking in Customer Service

We enjoyed being aboard Celebrity Beyond. However, we were extremely disappointed in the after cruise customer service. Two weeks before our booked cruise we phoned Celebrity to see about an upgrade to our cabin. The hold time before talking to an agent was about 52 minutes. The Celebrity agent offered us an upgrade for $462. We replied that we would accept the upgrade, provided we would retain the same benefits from the original booking. The agent replied that we would. Those benefits included a $300 onboard credit. After the cruise we received a notice indicating that we were charged $257 for onboard expenses, which should have been included with the onboard credit as per the original booking. I then called customer service, on hold for 67 minutes this time, and was informed that we lost our onboard credit when we upgraded our cabin. No amount of logic could convince them that we were promised the same benefits as the original booking when we upgraded. It seems that when you walk off the ship you are no longer a customer. *As a footnote, we also had a problem with our airline flights by Celebrity. After our cruise ended in Barcelona, we flew to Paris. While there we both got COVID and needed to delay our return flight. I called Flights by Celebrity to change our return flight and was put on hold for one hour and 23 minutes. Needless to say that created a big cell phone bill, but more importantly it shows the difficulty in contacting customer service in a time of need. We are very disappointed. Their Customer Service is NOT a service!

We just returned from the cruise with…

We just returned from the cruise with Celebrity Equinox. It was the worst cruise we have ever been on: absolutely child UNfriendly. Celebrity falsely advertised the ship as a child-friendly cruise but they did not even have a swimming pool for kids or a camp for kids under 3!!! My 2.5 years old was not allowed to join the kids camp because it starts for 3 years old even though their website advertised that they have kids camp starting 6 months. Not even a splash pad... On the 5th night of the cruise, a piece of furniture in the bathroom broke and landed on my child's foot and causing bleeding and bruising. The furniture was rotten with mildew!!! We called emergency, front desk, etc. They offered $1000 future cruise credit. We refused. Seriously, even if they paid us $5000 for future cruises, we wouldn't waste 7 days of our vacation on a cruise that is so boring and has absolutely nothing for kids. Other couples with kids stated how terrible the cruise was as well. Two sets of grandparents, who came with us on the cruise, said it was the most boring cruise.

We are desperate for the money that is owed to us & for future years will be travelling with another cruise operator as Celebrity are terrible!

AVOID CELEBRITY CRUISES LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!

My wife and I originally had a 10 day European cruise scheduled for the summer of 2020 but due to the pandemic, we took the 125% cruise credit rather than a 100% refund. HUGE MISTAKE!! It's been a nightmare dealing with Celebrity Cruises ever since. Hours upon hours spent on the phone with them over several phone calls, only to find out that what we were told was lies....every time. AND....they took $1,800 from us. I'll explain. After the canceled cruise due to the pandemic and our 125% credit, in early 2021 we booked another 10 day cruise because we had to book before April and use before Dec 31, 2021. So we booked a 10 day cruise for Sept 2021 using our credit. Unbeknownst to us, they changed that cruise from 10 days to 7 days but were going to charge us the same as the 10 day cruise we booked. 3 less days of having to feed us for the same price? We told them no, we want a 10 day cruise like we paid for. The time to reschedule was extended due to the pandemic not being over so we booked a 10 day cruise for this year (Sept 2022). Great! We even had money from our credit left over so we asked and were told that we could share that credit with friends: $1,800! NOW, Celebrity Cruises say they didn't say we could do that and in fact, they say we have no credit to give. We told them to "review our recorded conversation" because they record them and get back with us. When we didn't hear from them, my wife called, spent another hour on hold before someone finally came on the line and said they didn't apply any credit to our friends and that we had no credit remaining either. My wife asked them about our $1,800 remaining credit they told us we had on that recorded phone call and they lied and told us they never told her that. We haven't even taken the cruise yet and Celebrity Cruises has ALREADY ruined our trip of a lifetime before it has even started. We will never take another cruise with them. We should've stuck with Carnival. They're horrible too, but at least getting lied to and the bad customer service would've been less expensive.

They keep your refundable deposits

They keep your refundable deposits. I used to be a strong supporter of Celebrity Cruises, having done 13 cruises and becoming an Elite member. But since the pandemic started all our cruises were cancelled, our deposits rolled over into expiring future cruise credits which they have kept. We're owed over $4000 CAD, so I can't recommend nor will I sail with them again. Maybe part of my problem was dealing direct with Celebrity Cruises as the sole travel agent, if I had dealt with an independent travel agent, I might have gotten a better response. The last cruise they cancelled, they took my cash deposit of 300 pounds sterling and marked it as a cancellation fee. Crooks!
