Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Luggage charge

My wife and I decided to book a five star cruise so we decided to go with celebrity cruises we booked everything through them the flights as well as the cruise When we arrived at the airport the checking staff said the flights had been booked without out any luggage it was booked as economy light we had to pay a charge of £42 each each way even the man who checked us in couldn't believe it either that the cruise was booked without luggage When we arrived on the ship we told the customer services about our luggage and they were very helpful and said they needed to contact head office they got back to me the next day and said that a lot of people who go on a five star cruise don't take luggage they buy their clothes as go along which is ridiculous why can't they except that they made a mistake when making the booking and reimburse me. I would also like to add that I did send a email to head office to complain but I'm still waiting for a reply typical. If you book a cruise with celebrity book the flights your self to avoid disappointment

I recently finished an 11 day sailing…

I recently finished an 11 day sailing to Alaska on Celebrity Eclipse. I am very disappointed. I have mostly sailed with Celebrity and this cruise was a disaster. We got on the cruise fine and it looked promising but the room was missing the shelf in the closet which is nice to have. Good thing I brought magnetic hooks. The staff were very nice but the ship was so short staffed in many areas. The World Class Bar had one bartender and it took over half an hour to even get served or longer. The food was not as good as I recall on other sailings, so was disappointed with that. I preordered the picture package so I could have all the photos I wanted but they forgot to tell us we had to take our photos after supper in the hallway. No more photos off or coming on the ship and no photo was taken on chic evenings. When we gave them our email address, they said our pictures would be waiting for us. We have received no pictures as of now and are still waiting. That package was priced around 100 usd. I want my pictures, at least the ones we had taken. On day 7 I got covid. Very poor response from Drs on ship. I was made to isolate in an inside cabin and my husband who tested negative got to go to a big room with a big window. They knew, as a CAD Veteran, I suffered from PTSD and depression, but that did not matter. The medical staff were very hard to get hold of. The meals that came to the room were cold or lukewarm. I was kept in the dark about what was going to happen to me at the end of the cruise. Little or no passage of information which only isolated me more. I felt so alone and when promised premium wifi, and tv programming, well we only got the wifi a day or so before end of cruise. There were notes sent to the room but the information kept on changing, even on the day of getting off ship. I was so disappointed, I cancelled an upcoming cruise with them in 2024. I know the covid is not the responsibility of the cruise line and I did appreciate the fact that they are offering up to 350 USD for room and meals, which I will claim. I have heard from others this does not happen too quickly so I guess I am at their mercy to reply back to me. I am really disappointed we did not get our photo package.

Celebrity Edge, sept 3-10

Was on the Celebrity Edge the week of September 3-10. The staff in all areas of the ship were fantastic. The host ( Yulia ) at the Normandy restaurant was the best, she went out of her way to get us a table. Chistopher our head w at inter in the same restaurant told us some really funny stories. We went to this restaurant twice because of them. Marina and Oscar were both very attentive to our needs as well. Here our room concierge was the best, always called us by name and constantly asked if we needed anything. It was a sn amazing week. Well done Celebrity.

I won't be cruising Celebrity again.

Just got back from a celebrity millennium 8 nights to Alaska. The only good thing was the cruise was only half full, so guests had more space - which was nice. For me the cruise is all about the dining options - which I found to be very poor. The variety was lacking and the taste was not appealing. None of the buffet carvers were of any descent cuts of beef. Often times their carver was just a roasted chicken. The main dining room had prime rib served one time and it was poor quality. I saw many good reviews on Celebrity, so I was expecting much better. I thought they would give Holland cruise a run for the top spot, but instead Celebrity has fallen to the bottom in my opinion. I give Holland America the top score, followed by Carnival (Carnival's burgers are so much better than Celebrities that it's not even funny). Then comes Royal Carribean and the last position used to be Norwegian Cruise Line, but now Celebrity is below Norwegian for the last place finisher. I was really disppointed after the high expectations.

Terrible company!!

Terrible company!!. We were treated very badly recently with very poor or in existent communication after being refused boarding at the embarcation port due to a positive lateral flow test 5 days before. We followed their instructions to get a PCR the following day which we duly did with a licensed company and the result was negative. We also had a negative pre flight test as well! We completed the relevant sections on the App and the day before we were due to travel to the port, the App would not allow us to complete the last section ie pre boarding requirements etc . We didn’t have any means of asking Celebrity why and presumed it was a technical glitch.. We didn’t get any email ( they had it in their records) to warn us of what was going to happen at the port . Our after care following their decision to refuse us embarkation on our cruise was awful to say the least. We were saved by the great efforts of our travel agent in the uk ( who had been contacted by then and didn’t know anything about it!!) She tried to fight our case but Celebrity would not budge. We had to fly back to the Uk the following day and incurred costs which have been reimbursed by the travel agent and not Celebrity! To this day we have not received a single email or communication from Celebrity to apologise for our disappointment at missing our cruise. We will NEVER have anything to do with Celebrity and it has certainly put the nail in the coffin as regards cruises.

Michaels Club Poor Service

We have sailed with Celebrity and other cruise lines on many occasions. This time for a special occasion we treated ourselves to a suite. At the outset, I have to say the welcome aboard was great. Lovely suite. Fantastic Butler. Luminae restaurant staff brilliant. Even the staff around the ship were cheery and always acknowledged you. Imagine our surprise when on the first evening in Michaels club ( suite guests perk!!) we were greeted by a surly individual that struggled to make any conversation with us. His barman left our drinks on the bar to fetch ourselves. Kicking myself for going and getting them. Second night, my wife went out of her way to start a conversation with him. " How was your day?" It was fine, he replied. Stood for 10 seconds and then walked off to start a lengthy conversation with a table next to us. I'm still livid at his rudeness. Meanwhile, his barman was constantly checking on a large table. He just provided drinks but kept popping back every few minutes to see if their glass level had dropped at all. Great service you'd think. Well, we were sitting with empty glasses. On his third trip to the other table I watched him take notes out of his pocket and start counting his tips. My mistake apparently was that despite tips being included in my rather large fare, I assumed that I would tip for exceptional service. Not just any service. I complained to the Hotel Director who said he'd "speak to them" . Fat lot of use when after we get off. So, there are many really good things with Celebrity cruises and some really hard working individuals. It's just the odd few that nothing is ever done about that pulls the whole team down. Think very carefully before opting for a suite.

Celebrity cruises experience

We boarded the ship in Vancouver. Total chaos about 500 people in a massive long queue, badly organised.. Took 2hrs. We booked Aqua class. What a mistake that was. The cabin was the most awful we have ever had in 22 years of cruising. Tatty, tiny , low grade fittings. As for storage, our cloths are stuffed into one old cupboard and 4 small drawers. The extras given are not worth having. Yoga mat etc. we had to move cushions and mats out to make move for 2 of us. The food offered in Aqua Class is no better than you would expect from a standard restaurant. We have complained and been offered 300£ off another cruise. We would not do another cruise like this if you paid us. We have just cancelled a cruise booked for 2023. This cruise used to be 5 * but it’s not even 3* . Celebrity want your last penny, so called free WiFi is not worth having. Proper WiFi is 160$ !!. Totally disappointed. .
