Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Disappointing Decline in Customer Service and Loyalty Recognition

I have been a loyal Celebrity Cruises customer, having embarked on 10 cruises with them over the years, experiencing everything from inside cabins to royal suites. We even celebrated our honeymoon with Celebrity, cherishing the quality service and exceptional experiences they once provided. Unfortunately, my recent cruise with Celebrity has left me extremely disappointed and disheartened. The real frustration, however, came after the cruise. I lodged a complaint about our experience, hoping for some understanding and resolution. Instead, I was met with a complaint handler who was not only indifferent but also unable to empathize with our situation. It was clear they couldn’t put themselves in our shoes, despite our long history with the company. After such a negative experience, I no longer feel valued as a customer. The lack of appreciation for loyalty and the significant decline in customer service mean that I won’t be rushing back to sail with Celebrity Cruises anytime soon. It’s a real shame to see such a once-great company fall so far.

um aus dem Schiff rauszugehen musste ich 3 Stunden warten weil die Reichen Gäste zuerst rausgehen müssen. Verpasse deswegen das F1 Rennen in Spa. Essen war im Oceanview teilweise essbar

Cancelled flights ruined our cruise vacation

Our flights, which were booked by the cruise line, were cancelled the day of the cruise. The company did not provide us any guidance, customer service did not return our call, did not provide an E-Mail or text, or any support to assist us. We missed our Alaskan cruise and the company did not provide any rebooking or reimbursement for the $10,000 lost on the cruise.

Balcony stateroom was appalling !

Flight to Barcelona generally ok, pick up at airport was poorly organised but having cruised before we knew the ropes. Through embarkation onto ship in anticipation of seeing our stateroom! On entering the room the disappointment hit us immediately. The condition of the room was appalling! Stained carpet, broken glass light fixtures, broken picture frame hanging off the wall, dirty carpets food droppings and dust underneath bed, settee cover stained, dressing table chair old scuffed and peeling fabric, balcony was dirty, drainage gully blocked, glazing stained and dirty, paint on handrail, decking and balcony furniture, shower outlet noisy, dust covered bed side cupboards. It was a total letdown! I have cruised many times before and was on this ship maybe 10 years ago, I have never seen anything like this before. Hold your heads in shame Celebrity ! Anyone who knows anything about holidaying on cruise ships knows how much we enjoy seeing the stateroom. We will never cruise again with Celebrity. I wish I could add photos so you could all see what Celebrity offered up as 5 star accommodation! Please be warned when considering this cruise line for your next holiday.

Every thing went wrong from start to…

Every thing went wrong from start to finish. Celebrity cruise are the biggest thieves. Didn’t have AMERICAN VISA.. CHARGED 700 US Dollars. And that was not for visas. We applied for visa. Costed us 21 US dollars. And on top of it everyday tip was 18US dollar per person per day. Finally when we left mini bars charge was 12.75 US dollars. WE NEVER USED ANYTHING FROM MINIBAR. I AM TELLING EVERYONE. PLEASE BE CAREFUL BOOKING THE TRIP WITH CLEBRITY CRUISE. BURNT OUR FINGERS ONCE NEVER AGAIN

Once Upon a Time Celebrity Was Great Not Anymore

Have cruised 2 prior times with Celebrity and this was the 3rd cruise. Paid for the Retreat package. 2 months before sailing several of the Retreat benefits such as butler etc were removed from sailings without reducing the price ie it was bait and switch or more $$$ for less service. Tried to cancel but would have lost our deposit of nearly $1000. Food was average, given what we got and paid for it was totally over priced and is by NO means a luxury cruise - would have been cheaper with Carnival (sailed 10+ times with CC) and had the same level of service if not better. Excursions were average at best. We were charged $14 for a bottle of water that was supposed to be included in the room and customer service refused to budge but asked for a 5 star review - we gave everyone a 1 star review because of the customer service rep. Room attendant was rude and made smart comments that we could have done it ourselves when we asked him to clean out the room refrigerator. The list goes on and on. Clearly not the cruise line it once was under the prior President and it is evident that the current president Ms. Laura Hodges Bethge is turning Celebrity into RCL 2.0 as that is where she came from. Don't waste your money you can get much better for less elsewhere.

SINGLE PERSONS, DON’T GO

SINGLE PERSONS, YOU GET DISCRIMINATED. We booked a cruise for 5 people. We paid total 7500,00 euros. We had to cancel because one person experienced an ischemic stroke right before our departure. Because of this only 1 person of our group is still going on the cruise. Since he is a person that travels alone, he is required to pay an additional fee of 900 euros (above the 7500 euros!). So this means that a single person pays 1.5 times the price of 2 persons. Meaning, this company discriminates people that travel alone!

Visit to vancouver, alaskan cruise, and 3 day day calgary with Rodeo

This was my first cruise and time in Canada and Alaska. My husband and i found the experience one we will never forget. The ship was organised and the staff helpful and friendly. Daily entertainment was plentiful and easy to find with quiet areas for others including the sky observation area which i loved. So much food choice and bars, gift shops. I thought meeting the Captain and crew was a great touch. The choice of land trips was so organised and gave us great experiences such as gold panning and canoeing. So thank you celebrity for best experiences and memories.

Not worth it...

I was on a cruise with my husband at the celebrity constellation this July 2024, the ship sailed from Ravenna and arrived in Civitavecchia....Food was ok.. room was ok... But drinks prices was not exaggerated, was ABUSIVE, a glass of cheap wine costs three or four times more than in any other restaurant, price of massages and water also abusive... MEGA abusive, and I've been in luxurious places and I've never saw those prices. Then the excursions.... There were expensive and I thought that it would be worth it...BUT NO. In Dubrovnik the worst experience with the guide, she doesn't like her work. The in Salerno... Terrible, horrible experience in Pompei, they let us almost just smell the city, and obligated us to go at a shopping center for 30 min and see the jewelry they sell.. w.t.f?? WHY don't you use those 30 min to get to know the city more? or maybe for free time and we go around the ruins? I was excited to meet Pompei and I purchased this cruise thinking in our stop in Salerno, Pompei has three mains streets but we only walked just one very quickly. The tour was MEDIOCRE. I felt so sad because go to Pompei was a dream to me, I'm a history teacher. The problem is you cannot rate the tour and you can't see reviews just like other websites like guetyourguide or civitatis.. and please... If you go at celebrity cruises don't use ther excursions...go to the city and look for a private guide or use civitatis. If you want authentic food, you won't get it at the cruise. Try to get lunch at the port or city you go where you would be able to drink a good European wine for just 7 or 10 € Instead of €30 for cheap Californian wine.

Celebrity - won't be back

Returned from a Celebrity Apex cruise on Monday 8th July 2024 We had purchased Jewellery in the Effy store - no problem with that. On Sunday 7th July Celebrity placed a "pending" charge on my credit card - no issue with that. On Monday 8th Celebrity added the "Real" charge to my credit card as expected. It's now Friday 12th & the "pending" charge is still showing. I rang Celebrity who told me the "pending" charge would disappear but it takes up to 7 working days - thanks for that Celebrity - it has taken my card over its limit & I cant spend on it. Why couldn't you just convert the "pending" charge to the "real" charge when we disembarked? Also purchased a bottle of fragrance in the on board store as a gift. When the recipient opened it (totally sealed, plastic wrapped) the bottle was full of air - no odour of fragrance, it had clearly never contained any. I mentioned this to the customer service rep. dealing with the card issue who said I'd need to speak to a different department, he fumbled around for a few minutes but couldn't find the relevant number at which point I said "don't bother". We have been on 30 cruises over the last 16 years & tried Celebrity based on a recommendation - once is enough, we won't be back (Whilst writing this I've had my monthly payment to Youtube Premium declined - thanks again Celebrity)
