Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Beware

Beware, your deposit is NON-REFUNDABLE. We cancelled our cruise in October thinking that we had a deadline of August to cancel and get our money back but we lost our deposit of $900. We did take a trip with Celebrity years ago and had a good experience so we gave them another try but NEVER AGAIN.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS - LAST MINUTE CHANGES TO CRUISE

I've never left a review, but I felt it necessary to make an account in order to pre-warn others about the disgusting service. This will be our first cruise ever and our first time visiting Japan, which has been my number 1 destination to visit for many years. We're going on the 6th August 2024 for the "12 NIGHTS BEST OF JAPAN" it should really be renamed to 11 nights best of south Japan after the below happened. They wait until the day after all deposits HAVE to be paid to inform everyone the cruise has been changed and we're now no longer visiting the north of Japan and we're going to be docked in Tokyo for an entire day. Following the outrage from other passengers, Celebrity Cruise have come back with several reasons as to why, such as their contract running out with the northern docks in Japan... Surely if you're running a company with any level of competence you would know WAY ahead of time of such a thing happening. If the weather was atrocious when we were sailing around Japan and we we're unable to dock in the north etc... I would accept that, as this can happen unexpectedly. However, every single excuse they've provided would've been seen MONTHS in advance. Regardless, we have NO option but to go on this scam of a cruise for the SOUTH of Japan only, as there is no refund available. I will be making an official complaint and going to the financial ombudsmen. Please forward your complaints procedure, Celebrity Cruise. If you read this review, AVOID Celebrity Cruise.

Never never ever again

This will be our 4th and final with Celebrity. It's nothing but noise from the minute you join to when you can escape. The quality has gone down over the last 5 years. Drink prices are a con. $9 + 20% service charge for a small bottle of beer $4 for a Coke +20% total $15.6 plus another 10% vat if in Spanish waters. No you can keep the noise and rip somebody else off. Get some singers who can sing and Djs who don't think it's funny to turn the music on full blast (childish).

Fantastic cruise to Alaska from…

Fantastic cruise to Alaska from Vancouver on the Celebrity Solstice. Excellent room with balcony, room attendant was very helpful. We chose the Select dining experience which was fantastic - great choice of dishes and plenty of it. Mathieu and Rany were particularly great staff in the dining room. I have nothing bad to say about it. the morning we went to Dawes Glacier was excellent - so close in for great views. Entertainment - both lectures and shows etc were good - very varied programme every day. I didn't want to leave the ship

Fantastic trip

We’ve just finished a Celebrity Cruise on the Equinox on the Italian and French Riverias. It was our first cruise and we can’t fault it - loved every minute! We thought the entertainment would be cheesy but the variety was terrific, from a hilarious stand up comedian, to three female musicians, a pianist and a violinist. Lots of music also in venues across the ship and loads of activities. We enjoyed the music and general knowledge quizzes. The ship is beautiful and the staff can’t do enough for you. Special mentions to Drew and Charlotte and our cabin attendant Rama. The choice of food was excellent with lots of vegetarian options for us. Port stops were well organised and ran smoothly and chilled water and cold face cloths awaited our return. We didn’t want our cruise to end. We’ll be back!

Mandatory fee!

We've sailed several different cruise lines in the pass this was our first time with Celebrity. They have a mandatory fee of $18 per person per day charge. We sailed in a family room for 4 with our 2 young daughters so, our mandatory fee for our 7 night was $504. Just keep that in mind when booking it's really adds up to the total cost of your trip. Celebrity infinity is a smaller and older vessel with no waterpark activities for the kids it has just one main pool area and another one for the spa area. So, maybe it's not a good choice for younger parents traveling with kids.

The Beyond Celebrity Ship is aptly…

The Beyond Celebrity Ship is aptly named because it was beyond our expectations in almost every way. It began with a warm welcome into the Retreat private waiting area where Eva completed ID check and provided good information for our cruise. From meeting our personal butleress, Rhona, who was amazing, ( sweet and service 5 star) and Edy who was a detailed and friendly man who took care of our room to the staff at The Retreat’s exclusive restaurant, Luminaire, service was outstanding . Victor in the Luminaire stands out for his exuberance and kindness as well as knowledge of menu and drinks. He is a delight. His positivity was contagious. Ohran and Strajinga were very engaging and provided good service and conversation.😁 Hi guys! Rolando was a hard worker and always ready to take care of our order. There was a young lady, Raginah, who never stopped working. She took care of us and others at The Retreat pool and then she appeared in the Retreat Lounge and then I saw her wiping down windows and glass doors. She is a whirlwind worker and as sweet as can be. I hope Celebrity acknowledges these standouts. Let me not forget Caesar and Prasheen from the Retreat Lounge Bar. Caesar wins at dancing at silent disco. He has some crazy moves. They are both so funny. We just wanted to hang out with them. (Love ya guys.) I also noticed Captain Leo taking the time to be outside wishing us a great day at our ports. Nice gesture. Negatives: Bartenders at Martini bar as well as other bars seemed disconnected. On other cruises, I have found them to be some of the friendliest of staff, upbeat and have big personalities. Not on this Celebrity cruise (btw this was my first Celebrity Cruise and we were Retreat guests). Many times they actually ignored people waiting to order. Also very understaffed in Retreat Pool bar and slow service until after 11:30am. The selections at Oceanview Cafe buffet was the best I’ve seen. Italian, Indian, Asian, American, Latin, Mexican… pastries, breads, desserts and ice cream bar. Pool whether in the Retreat or Main pool and even Solarium tended to have those people who just stayed in and drank and talked most of the day. Annoying. I stayed in Retreat and enjoyed the quiet and slipped into the jacuzzi with beautiful view. Before I write a novella, in closing, I highly recommend Celebrity Retreat Suite level.

Deserve a much higher rating

I do not understand why they have such a low rating. I have cruised with many cruise lines including Disney virgin and Royal Caribbean and I have to say the customer service and celebrity is as good as it is on Disney which is the market leader. We went on the celebrity apex out of Southampton and had an amazing four night cruise. The food was exceptional as well as the service at every level. My only gripe would be with the lack of real entertainment in the evenings other than the shows which were two closely scheduled together making it impossible to see both they only had one musician on board playing guitar and lacked a piano player or something similar in one of the bars. But that is a small gripe.
