Economy Energy has room for improvement based on customer feedback. Customers particularly appreciate service and professional, though some mention concerns about customer service and communication.
Very rude operator who asked me to repeat what I was saying 5 times then she hung up on me
A very strange case - I read that they went bankrupt in January 2019 and their clients switched to other operators. But, my friend made a switch to them in October 2021 and the gas card works normally ... What is going on ?????
Ofgem closed down Economy Energy in January 2019 following an official investigation into the supplier. In June 2018, the Economy Energy suffered backlash after customers complained about money being removed from their bank accounts without notice or explanation. The main reason for complain was that customers insisted that their accounts had been in order and that they owed no money to the supplier. This signaled the beginning of the end for the supplier. Customer complaints led to Ofgem opening a formal investigation, and at the beginning of 2019, the regulatory body banned the supplier from taking on new customers. One week later, the energy company ceased trading.

Further to my recent review. Since I contacted economy energy on 20 December 2018, complaining to why I haven’t received my refund I found out today 31 December 2018 through contacting them again via phone that they have from when I contacted them on the 20th re-evaluated my account and now it’s gone from them owing me over £200 to me owing them over £121 and that’s just the Gas, there still re-evaluating the electric bill, they are now trying to say that I was on the wrong tariff? They are now trying to stitch me up for complaining about them keeping my money for several months. Looks like going to be a hard slog Battling it out via the energy ombudsman. WARNING!!! Give this company the widest birth you can, they’re corrupt, incompetent and greedy!! Hope this review helps.
My story is not dissimilar to many on here who complain. They do not adhere to promises and after amassing almost £450 credit I had no choice but to involve the ombudsmen. They quickly decided in my favour and the company even sent a confirmation to the ombudsmen that they had completely resolved my issue. They lied..... The ombudsmen confirmed they had not actually done anything they were ordered to and despite assurances from them earlier they had complied with nothing. I wanted to advise any potential customers of this company that there is a common theme here, you get very much in credit very quickly however they hold on to your money (at least in my experience) to the point of considering legal action. With all the issues one deals with on a daily basis this is one you really don't need, they did the same to my father who waited almost a year for a £20 referal fee, despite speaking to numerous management and myself who is owed the best part of £500, I have ream after ream of email "we will get back to you" standard replies!! The fact is I have been let down in the worst way, my family who were also with this company at one point were badly let down. I would never again have anything to do with this company. As it is the company cannot provide you with a customer service level that would be deemed at best the worst. They are not fit for purpose and for that reason I would ask you consider the days upon days worth of your time trying to resolve their errors? You end up doing their job for them as they are utterly incompetent and the time you waste they are happy to sit and do NOTHING. The industry I feel will come down extremely heavy on this company as they have a clear intent as well as a history of not complying with the energy ombudsmen findings against them. They lie, I have the proof in e mail format stating that my complaints will be resolved by a certain date only for the Energy ombudsmen to find out they lied and my case is reopened. For the sake of your sanity avoid this company at all costs, as I stated before I would gladly pay more from a well known company. These people are in my opinion nothing more than the "crooks" a previous writer stated. It's also funny that Economy Energy are complaining about that person's review?? They should focus more energy into providing customers with quality service instead they seek out negative reviews to try and block!!! Well this is fact and can be backed up with fact so try and remove this if you dare!!!! The longer this company refuses to rectify my issue the more I will share this review accross multiple platforms including but not limited to this platform and any I see fit for the purpose of educating your potential customers to your utter incompetence.
I’ve been with Economy Energy this year and can honestly say this is the worst company I have ever dealt with. I left in November but they continue to take direct debits and it’s proving very difficult to get my final bill and credit of around £200 refunded. I have called on numerous occasions and of course like everyone else...it’s been dealt with and should hear something later in the day. Promises to return calls and updates are never fulfilled. The complaints procedure is totally ignored. I have only given 1 star as it’s the lowest to give.. Do not switch to Economy energy unless you are willing to lend them money, possibly to gain interest to help pay a large fine from Ofgem which I’m sure is on its way......again!
i think there is a common theme here, CROOKS, it would seem that i like a lot of others have been unable to get a credit refund and even when i was with them they ignored all requests to amend my DD as i knew i was leaving and would be in CR, i should have got suspicious earlier and cancelled the DD. I left EE on the 4th Sept with a credit balnce of £450 and despite numerouus phone calls and online chats have been fobbed off with its with the refund deptartment who dont even have a phone so that i can talk to them. i have lost patience now so have complained to the Ofgem and i think i will consider the small claims court next
Economy Energy kept my >£500 credit balance after leaving them FOR 6 MONTHS before I finally got the money back, PLUS a £50 apology, and it cost me nothing but my time, but before I reveal how... I'm now with Bulb, and not only do they pay any exit fees your current supplier charges, but if you use my referral link we both get £50 credit too! bulb.co.uk/ refer/mauricen9005 ^^ remove the spaces to make it work So after the worst year of my life with Economy Energy as my duel fuel supplier, loads of emails and phone calls, all resulting in excuses and lies from Economy Energy, I eventually initiated a complaint with Resolver (resolver.co.uk) - this is well worth doing because not only does it guide you through the process of making a formal complaint, but if it comes down to it, it makes it super easy to escalate the complaint to the Ombudsman. True to form, Economy Energy took at least 2 weeks to respond to each email I sent via Resolver, and of course nothing ever happened, only excuses and lies. After 2 months I was able to escalate my request to refund my credit balance to the Ombudsman. This is my first experience with these guys and I have to say they were very responsive getting a resolution agreed with Economy Energy within about a week - that resolution was 1. for Economy Energy to repay the credit balance they owed me 2. for Economy Energy to pay me an additional £50 3. for Economy Energy to write a formal apology letter All of this was supposed to happen within 3 weeks/15 working days. Can you guess what happened? I had a letter from them fairly quickly basically repeating the remedy actions above and with a single sentence with a very non apologetic tone acknowledging the issue but not much more! 4 weeks go by and I was paid the £50 but still no Gas or Electric credit refund. Eventually I had to chase the Ombudsman! The Ombudsman tried contacting Economy Energy by phone but they didn't answer! Ultimately Economy Energy had repaid my money within a few days, but it did take several more emails back and forth with the Ombudsman while Economy Energy first paid my Gas and then eventually Electric credit back. It's happy ending for me now, but I feel like a lot of people would have given up and just let them keep the money. Don't do that - Economy Energy need to be held accountable and if there are enough complaints about their behaviour the Ombudsman has the power to shut them down.
I really hope that every one gets what's due to them from this totally inefficient and more likely crooked company but would like to share my experience. I was told for weeks and was even sent emails and a paper bill showing I was in credit with gas account and had debit of £39 for electricity. I paid balance of electricity and was told to expect refund for gas of £54. I've had other issues with awful service and incorrect bills etc which I won't even take the time to explain now. Eventually after 3 attempts to transfer to new supplier, one of which was after a call to EE and being told accounts were up to date! Blocked again! Then I began getting demands for payments of over £200. After 8 weeks and a complaint which wasn't answered I resorted to ombudsman. They facilated transfer to new provider within few weeks. Ombudsman's findings cited so many examples of poor customer services they awarded me highest amount of compensation of £100 plus written apology and EE were told to produce a final bill using my reading by 21 December. 2 out of the 3 so far! It is past target date but apparently ombudsman allows another 2 weeks to complete. The ombudsman's comment I'd like to draw people's attention to is that, ombudsman told EE 'when a bill is cancelled, this amount should not be added as a credit to customer's account as it produces a false balance', Really!!? I hope this billing error?! hasn't been applied to others that have been told they are due refunds. I cannot believe this company are still able to continue in business with their terrible service and what I consider to be sharp, if not illegal practises. I change suppliers regularly but this experience has made me doubt the recommendations of consumer experts to do so. As I first applied to transfer from EE in May it is going to be at least 7 months before this is settled. Absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable.
After repeated requests for my refund and repeated dates missed I filed a claim online against Economy Energy using the money claim online link on 14th December. It cost £25 which was added to what they owed me and also daily interest from when my initial request was made. I received payment last Friday including fees and interest. If you have a final bill and proof that it's owed to you I would seriously consider this route than sending emails and spending countless hours on the phone. Good luck.
Firstly, I'm very sorry to hear of everyone's bad experiences regarding this crooked, crony company. I used to work at Economy Energy in their customer services department, and can assure each and every dissatisfied former or current customer that the bad experiences you have are instigated from the top down. The long waiting times, the inability to refund customers, the investigations by ofgem, all of them, have been directed by the upper echelons of power to trickle down. The one decent member of staff in a position of power has been sadly blinded and silenced by a massive pay packet. I was going to name that member of staff, but, to be honest, I feel like it's worth far more the public actually hearing what I have to say about this broken operation that my own review getting reported. The managers bully and harass members of staff, there's a culture of excessive workloads, minimal support, terrible hours and also being made to feel like nothing are the norm. Unfortunately, the good members of staff are treated very badly, so please don't blame them, it really is the useless people making the decisions that do you all harm. Jump ship whilst you can, worst 2 months of my life before I was bullied out by the disgusting and horrible managers.
Worse energy provider ever. They have a zero costumer service policy meaning you can cannot reach out to them without waiting for 40-45 min over the phone and when you try by email nobody replies. I have tried to close my contact since 2 months but because they own me overpayment they refuse to close it. They are asking for random documents such as end of tenancy agreement or new utility bill. Anyway my advise is run away from them as soon as you can.
