My move-in day was yesterday. What I received based on the photos advertised on the listing, as well as the virtual tour, were far from what the unit was actually like in-person. I was effectively catfished.
Firstly, upon getting to the unit and retrieving my keys, I noticed that the front door wasn’t even LOCKED. I quite literally just turned the doorknob and was able to get inside – didn’t have to fumble with the keys at all.
Anyway, let’s get to the “good stuff”:
LIVING ROOM/HALLWAY
- Fireplace = dusty, full of dead bugs
- Floors = FLOODED; I even tried cleaning a little bit with the towels I brought but almost slipped in the process; the water I was cleaning off the floor was also dirty
- Lights = very dim and barely working
KITCHEN
- Fridge = BROKEN!!! Very warm and the lights were completely out; dozens and dozens of dead (and a few live) bugs in the fridge trays; the groceries I had been wanting to put in there have thoroughly spoiled in my car because I prefer that over putting them in the fridge
- Sink = Cause of flooding #1; filled to the brim with dirty and smelly water that, had I turned on the faucet, would have completely overflooded the unit even more; exterior was also very dirty; my younger sister, who was helping me move in, actually got physically sick being in its vicinity because of how unhygienic it was
- Dishwasher = Cause of flooding #2; a giant puddle was found leaking out from beneath this area; the appliance itself was also making a lot of noise as if someone had put it to use, except…why would you have the dishwasher running in a supposedly VACANT, supposedly “move-in ready” unit? In addition to that, the noises it was making were very abnormal, almost like a bunch of rocks were put into it; definitely a safety hazard
- Flooring = once again…FLOODED; almost slipped trying to clean it up; it’s also highly likely that the flooding had been fairly bad because there’s a giant water stain about three or four inches on the surface of the door leading into my bedroom; the stain itself also looks fresh and was damp when I (regretfully) touched it
BEDROOM
- The only redeeming part about the apartment, truly; a little dusty, sure, but that was to be expected; I like how spacious it is, but is it worth the hassle of the rest of the apartment? No. Not at all.
BATHROOM
- Someone’s DRIVER’S LICENSE was left on the toilet seat? Of all places? The pictures and the tour did not have this object present within them, obviously, so its appearance was probably a recent development…and I find that weird since I was under the impression that the unit wasn’t being occupied immediately before me (Darwin was paying for power before I paid servicing for my own electricity), so…that was concerning
- Sink: You’d think that I would at least be able to use water from this sink…nope. Filthy water. Didn’t even bother to check the shower because I didn’t want to get rained on by unclean water.
And you want to know what the cherry on top of this three-layered cake of repulsion was?
Maintenance wasn’t going to be able to help me until this MONDAY or WEDNESDAY. Granted, it isn’t maintenance’s fault because Darwin uses a third-party vendor, but when I spoke to the one of the vendor’s employees myself, he told me that Darwin hadn’t classified my situation as an emergency…so he would have to prioritize his other appointments.
So, Darwin Homes, you mean to tell me that:
1. not having clean water to drink, bathe in, cook with
2. not having a clean or operable fridge to store any food in,
3. being surrounded by dirty flood water and under the threat of a very probably leakage,
4. among the other grievances I listed above.
does NOT constitute a maintenance emergency? Especially after I told several of Darwin’s representatives that I HAD NO PLACE TO STAY THAT NIGHT? Did they really think I would want to stay in that unit for one night, let alone 3-4 days?
And all of this happened on move-in day. Day ONE.
