Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

GREEK ISLAND CRUISE REVIEW 18/09/2024 to 01/10/2024 The negativities we encountered fell into three main areas Pre-Cruise Booking Cruise Experience Post-Cruise Experience Pre-Cruise Booking - We did leave our booking quite late and perhaps as a result of the short time, until cruise departure, contributed to the nausea we experienced. Initially, all seemed very attractive the UK Celebrity Agent seemed knowledgeable, extremely helpful and provided an attractive price for our consideration. As we now had a booking reference number we were advised we would have a dedicated rep to look after our needs, so as advised the following day we spoke with our “dedicated rep”, but sadly the hotel was no longer available, the Air Flights had gone up, and his computer was “playing up”. Sadly the following day, the first rep was on leave, resulting in me being transferred to USA, where I had difficulty in understanding her dialect, but the outcome was, she said she had to start the reservation all over again, but her computer was playing up, and she would call me back - THIS NEVER HAPPENED. Day THREE and I had to phone - USA AGAIN - it seemed as if it was “Groundhog Day” territory, a repeat of the previous days nausea, with prices racing skywards, and another promised - BUT NEVER KEPT - PHONE CALL I think you can see the emerging picture, as Each conversation with a USA rep resulted in yet another revised schedule. The penultimate one had over $500 Anomoly, but to be fair the (SIXTH) rep dealing with it, he refused to take any monies until he resolved the issue, AND he did phone us back and successfully concluded the transaction. But at no time could anyone advise us where we were sat on plane, or if we could bring overhead case Does the £1336, for flights. SEEM LIKE A BARGAIN? Also “Easy Jet” did not allow me to sit beside my wife and more or less told me to dry my eyes, and had I paid the EXTRA COST WE COULD HAVE CHOSEN OUR SEATS - FLY AGEAN AIRWAYS MUCH CHEAPER, FRIENDLIER CREW, BETTER SERVICE Cruise Experience - The ships cabin crew attendant Satish went above and beyond, making our cabin experience enjoyable, despite both my wife and myself catching a respiratory issue on the ship, exacerbated with the air conditioning systems all over the ship, indeed we are now home and still NOT functioning 100% after something like SIX DAYS of this horrible infection on the ship. The food was tolerable - NOT EXCITING The entertainment on the ship was woeful. Z LIST NOBODIES that were either out of tune, amateurish in their craft or worse NOT FUNNY resulting in many of the audience departing the theatre early. Plus the pressure from waiters and crew members to take out either a drinks package or WiFi was intolerable, especially as you would need to drink $110 a day to justify the $1200 DRINKS DEAL, plus the WiFi was a PLUS COST, and we were advised it was weak. $11 FOR A BOTTLE OF 0% ALCOHOL BEER $18 FOR A GLASS OF WINE Charging $5 for bottled water is a disgrace, which on previous cruises was provided free. Rachael was a star ensuring you got seated in your preferred dining area, always greeting you with a smile. Egressing the ship at Istanbul was - HORRIFIC - from our balcony we could almost touch the pier, but instead we had to negotiate an underground tunnel that cost millions to create apparently, and seemed like miles to negotiate before exiting, IT CERTAINLY WAS NOT VERY FRIENDLY FOR ANYONE WITH WALKING ISSUES. AND POORLY SIGNPOSTED As Celebrity did not provide shuttle buses into the town area we were left to the mercy of the TAXI MAFIA - WHAT A RIP OFF. Despite agreeing the fare before we sat in the seat, for our return trip, he added TEN EUROS COST, as we were passing over the bridge, THE SAME ONE WE HAD TO PASS ON THE OUTWARD TRIP FOR FREE. Post-Cruise Experience - Thanks to ships crew attendants one of our luggage cases was completely ruined (wheel came off, plus a smashed side of the case. To be fair the disembarkation was well organised and information was provided continuously to enable a speedy get off the promised ONE HOUR TO AIRPORT - WAS ACTUALLY TWO HOURS. QUESTIONABLE WHETHER EDINBURGH AIRPORT WAS WORSE THAN ATHENS BUT SECURITY AT ATHENS WAS DIABOLICAL IT SEEMED LIKE TWENTY PASSPORT CHECKS WERE REQUIRED before we were allowed in to departure lounge. So I’ll let you determine why I offered low ratings of my experience and why I chose NOT TO RECOMMEND CELEBRIT

It was the best of times it was the worst of times

Hadn't travelled with Celebrity for many years and not sure we will be returning. The cruise itself was enjoyable Food was good, on the whole staff were very pleasant and accommodating, and the destinations were good. However we had a few issues whilst on board that we were unhappy with. Including poor reception and shore excursion staff, plus a couple of other niggles.Complained on my return received a standard response with offer of some on board spend for another cruise.( Really ?? Do I want to return !) But not one of the issues I raised was addressed or responded with proper answers .I relayed this back via E mail, and received yet another response today stating ' Your concerns will be passed on to staff on board they always welcome feedback' So still no firm answers to any of my questions, or concerns.Really poor after service I'm afraid which puts me off travelling with Celebrity again.

Currently rounded up my 3 three-month…

Currently rounded up my 3 three-month vacation in the United Kingdom and I decided to try out this company. Booking with Celebrity was simple enough, and we had decent communication with the staff after paying the deposit. However, once onboard, things started to go downhill. While there were plenty of activities and destinations to choose from, the customer service was a hit/miss, they only gave us updates when they felt like it, leaving us in the dark most of the time. To make matters worse, the WIFI was ridiculously expensive, and it barely worked. For the price we paid, I expected much better connectivity. It was frustrating trying to stay connected while processing my withdrawal from Frontierinvestcorp and frankly, not worth the cost. Overall, the cruise wasn't nearly as smooth or enjoyable as I'd hoped.

Had a great cruise to Iceland (Apex)…

Had a great cruise to Iceland (Apex) great ship and venues well indicated in lifts . Entertainment was excellent especially the two shows by the entertainment team . Food and service excellent especially by Alicia and Shauna in the Ocean and Cyprus restaurant . Trip was spoilt by Celebrity adding four lots of gratuities on the first day even though they should have been included . It was taken off after a request to do so .

Cruise to Norway on Eclipse June 24

Cruise to Norway on Eclipse June 24 Itinerary good. Show entertainment was excellent. Over 900 Corporate guests on board from an American company that dominated everything on board . Were told once on board that we could only use one of the four standard dining rooms and had no choice. Food was poor in quality and small portions. The other option self service restaurant was disappointing as well. Concierge balcony room also not worth it. We have cruised with many lines over the last ten years and at various price levels. Celebrity in our opinion has been the worst.

Afternoon

Afternoon I am writing this email whilst docked at Santorini. Its our second cruise with celebrity and we were very surprised that sparkling water is not included in our classic drinks package? Also it’s a 5% commission charge when using your room card in the casino, also no tea/coffee facilities in our cabin. It seems the little things have been stripped back to cut costs and increase profits. Also my wife had her hair coloured in the on board salon, to her dismay she was told that the staff were not included in the cost of gratuities by paying guests and further gratuities were requested within the spa. Very disappointing and we won’t be booking again as other providers do think of their customers first and foremost.

Cancelled our booking in time to get refund

We had booked a cruise to the Canaries for January 2025 and were told there were no flights direct to Barcelona from Manchester or Liverpool so we would have to fly via Frankfurt meaning the best part of a day in airports and flying. When I checked there was a direct flight from Liverpool to Barcelona with Ryan Air but the company won’t use this airline. A very rigid stance in everything plus realising how much we would have to pay for excursions, drinks, WiFi £260 for my husband and I for 10 days!!! Resulted in us cancelling. We’re sticking with Riviera where the price is inclusive of everything and the service impeccable. Celebrity Cruises hook you in and then reality slowly dawns.

Harsh penalties for cancellation

I was incredibly excited to embark on my dream cruise with Celebrity Cruises, but my experience was far from what I expected. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances (my wife testing positive for COVID-19), we had to cancel our trip just two days before departure. To my disappointment, Celebrity Cruises was unwilling to waive the cancellation fee of $3,500. Despite my willingness to rebook for a future cruise, their customer service representatives were inflexible and refused to budge on this exorbitant penalty. This lack of understanding and compassion left me feeling frustrated and disappointed. I had always held Celebrity Cruises in high regard, but this experience has significantly tarnished my opinion of the company. I would caution others to be aware of their strict cancellation policies and consider alternative cruise lines that may offer more flexibility and understanding during unexpected situations. We got thrown out to leave the boat on…

We got thrown out to leave the boat on our fifth day at Bermuda because of my 16 year old son got depressed because of a misunderstanding from one of the boys at the club,So instead of going to his parents for advice he went to a cruise provided physician for consultation about his depression, and guess what that doctor did after seeing my son ,He reported to management that my son is suicidal then all he'll broke loose that time,we were called at their office and to be informed that we need to abort the cruise immediately because of the situation my son was diagnosed by that doctor, they were just rushing us to let us out on that particular day but they cannot get any flight for us that night ,so we have to leave the boat early in the morning on our own expense flying on back to NY 2 days short of our vacation, these cruise ships doesn't even have a good solution for us passengers when those kind of situation exist, they just want to take you out of their responsibility as fast they could ,what kind od of customer service or relation towards us the customers who's paying a lot of money and efforts to give our family a nice pleasant vacation but no it's only their reputation that's being taking care of on this cruise ship and just to let them know that that stupid doctor mi's diagnosed my son because he graduated phycology and with Masters too.so beware newly passengers on Celebrity cruise line they love to srew us customers!

Sticking it to the Traveler

I called Celebrity and asked for a cruise to Scandinavia and they arrange it on Celebrity Eclipse for 09 may 2025, they then arranged my flight to Amsterdam, they mistakenly booked me to fly on May 7th arriving May 8, the ship does not arrive or leave until May 9th. I asked for it to be changed which they did to May 8th arriving on May 9 but they wanted to charge me a fee of over $1200 to do so. I then told them it was not acceptable and to cancel, they then said there was a cancellation fee of $900. Talk about a royal screwing.
