Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? Bin seit über 10 Jahren hoch zufriedener Kunde von Celebrity Cruises. War immer mit den Leistungen zufrieden. Gelegentlich gab es kleinere Probleme mit der Buchung. Aber die konnte ich immer problemlos telefonisch mit dem freundlichen und kompetenten Team aus Hamburg zur vollen Zufriedenheit klären. Jetzt hat Celebrity Cruises sein backoffice nach München verlegt. Seither gibt einen ganz schrecklichen neuen Internetauftritt. Die Mitarbeiter sind auch sehr freundlich aber leider von keiner Sachkenntnis getrübt. Die kennen nicht einmal die Schiffe von Celebrity. Vom Produkt selber ganz zu schweigen. Hab das Gespräch abgebrochen und bei einer anderen Gesellschaft gebucht.

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Very expensive for a solo traveller

Cruise very expensive ( double !) for a solo …..flew business class with KLM from UK to Buenos Aires….very expensive!!!!! All the places visited were incredible….Argentina, the Falklands, Ushuaia, Drake Passage, etc b…. Once in a lifetime experience …. Insurance Co would not allow me to go on my preferred ship. So had to go with a large cruise line !

This company is nothing but a scam

This company is nothing but a scam. We have had the worst experience ever. We booked our next trip on board upon promise of good rates to Japan. 400 $ was transferred, but according to them, they could not find it, even though my bank gave them the documents. After many calls and complaints I gave up the whole thing after three months. They could not find the funds and automatically the trip is cancelled according to the contract. Now three months prior to the trip they suddenly ask if I want to upgrade my cabin, while we long time ago planned something else. Now they are so rude and send us an invoice. I will use lawyer to get them off the business in at least Norway. Avoid this cruise line. Aside from all the irresponsible booking system, the food quality the elite feeling they used to have is gone. Just ridiculous low quality service and food.

Avoid the infinity

Avoid the infinity. Celebrity is quite big scam now... they do all the speak of luxury etc thinking their customers must be thick... but what you see in reality is more like Costa cruises! Seriously... the ship was dirty and falling apart. Hair in dining room napkins... the floor got filthy and no one cleaned.... the plates came out of dish washer filthy...a whole stack of them.... I'm really disappointed to hear the same of millennium as going on that thinking it was better

B2B Cruise North East Asia/Japan

We had looked forward to this B2B cruise (North East Asia/Best of Southern Japan) since booking it back in 2019. The cruise itself was fab, picking up some amazing ports along the way. Unfortunately, the ship didn't live up to expectations. The Celebrity Millennium is looking pretty tired and it's a small ship for 4 weeks cruising. Entertainment was just about ok although it was repeated word for word on the second leg. We had expected the shows to change it up a little but even the daytime activities (which included paper airplane competition, bingo, carpet golf, etc.) were exactly the same. This meant that we did get pretty ship crazy by the end of the third week. Food was another disappointment. We have always enjoyed the restaurant experience onboard but the meals were, again, repetitive and pretty poor on occasions. I ordered a pork schnitzel one evening which came slapped on top of a spoonful of potato salad - no veggies, no sauce! That was the last straw and from then on we dined in the Oceanview cafe where there was plenty of choice. Most ports of call were great but if you do this cruise bear in mind that when you enter/leave Japan you have immigration procedures to go through which involves everyone leaving the ship (by numbers) and then you are not allowed back on until all passengers have disembarked. We looked forward to visiting Jeju, South Korea. Once again there was immigration to contend with, a sea day to get there and five hours on land!! To summarise, we thoroughly enjoyed most ports of call and our room (8142) was very comfortable. However, we would not cruise on Millennium again.

Este crucero discrimina y ningunea a los hispanos: Estuve en un crucero de Celebrity Eclipse por La Patagonia. Si usted es hispanohablante y cree que porque los empleados y el Director del crucero es Mejicano le van a atender y a asistir en español, se equivocó. Ellos todas las actividades la hacen en inglés a nivel de nativos, no les interesa si usted entiende o no, si su nivel de inglés no es de nativo, va a pasar muchos disgustos porque nadie te quiere asistir en español. La empresa no invierte en hacer una página en español, siendo su clientela el 35% hispanohablante, no gasta en traductores ni en nada.Vi a muchas parejas de ancianos y gente mayor estar estresada por la falta de información en el crucero y en las excursiones. La discriminación a los hispanos es obvia y lo peor, propiciada por los mismos hispanohablantes. Celebrity es muy hábil tomando el dinero de los latinos, pero al abordar al crucero, el dinero de los latinos no vale igual que el de los estadounidenses, no los tratan igual ni les atienden igual, TODO el programa y los boletines y las actividades son para angloparlantes... Viendo la situación fui a la oficina a manifestar lo que estaba pasando y no me hicieron caso. No obstante, le escribí al Director del Crucero y nunca me contestó, solo recibí una llamada de un encargado diciéndome que esa empresa era una empresa americana y oficialmente es todo en inglés y esas son las normas de la empresa. A bordo éramos más de 500 hispanohablantes y se nos prohibió en las excursiones que los guías turísticos nos hablaran español. Imagínense, estar en Chile, Argentina y los guías a los mismos hispanohablantes tenían que hablarle inglés porque los jefes de las excursiones le impusieron eso, ya que no existen excursiones en español en países de habla hispana, una gran intolerancia y estupidez. Por cierto, las excursiones son carísimas, y no valen la pena, lo mejor es comprar excursiones al bajar en el puerto y no a ellos, no valen lo que piden. Esta empresa no invierte ni le interesa el hispano, solo tener anglosajones... Les recomiendo otros cruceros donde van no van a sufrir ese ninguneo y esa poca tolerancia que este crucero tiene en contra de los hispanos. Lo único que valía la pena era el Oceanview restaurant y los espectáculos nocturnos eran de una gran calidad, artistas de niveles muy buenos en sus ámbitos, los shows todos fueron estupendos. Pero música y moderación en inglés y poca ayuda en español.

Daylight Robbery

Booked a cruise and within a few weeks of booking they removed one stop, changed another stop to a poorer choice and then made new poorer stop into an overnight stay. This wasn’t the cruise we booked. Customer service wasn’t interested I had back and forth emails and in the end they said they would half the admin fee to change the cruise. The issue is when you transfer the booking it’s actually more expensive than to cancel, lose £300 deposit and book a new one with better discounts ! Stupid situation caused by them. Basically now lost £300 because they changed the cruise. Just so you know the changes were made many months before we sail so it wasn’t a weather or issue whilst on board which I would have accept if that was the case. Never sailed with them and don’t intend to ever with this absolute farce. They supposed to be a premium company I wouldn’t put them anywhere near premium based on this experience. I should have just given some random person £300.

Old Ship with worst issues in Cabin

Sailed Celebrity Reflection - Old Ship with worst issues in Cabin. There was a worn out couch that had rips along the top plastic covering. Storage space was also an issue. It appears Celebrity is cutting issues regarding Food and Beverages. On one particular evening in the main Dining Room, I ordered the Shrimp Scampi. I asked the waiter for double portion of shrimp. When the plate was served their was only 6 medium size shrimp. So I called over the assistant Matri D' as I thought they forgot the double portion. To my surprise, he said it was as a single portion is only 3 shrimp and it used to be 4 but Celebrity cut it down in size. In regards to beverage, we had the Non Alcohol Beverage Package. The package included High End Bottle Water. However, any chance an employee had they tried (to not avail). to serve us the low end bottle water. Bimini is a waste of a port if you do not do a water activity. There is no "Bahama" style straw market near the ship only the Resort World Village which was like a "Ghost Town.

I booked a Safari to the Yala National…

I booked a Safari to the Yala National Park. Cost £456 for two of us: Coach to a hotel for lunch which was fine then to the park. Got into 4x4 vehicle with 4 other people. Driver took us along a main road with 20 other 4x4 going in different directions. After 45 minute driver stopped for 15 minutes and returned back to the coach along the same road. No attempt to go into the wooded area - You wont see a leopard on a main road, or bear or crocodile. Very poor. Spoke with shore excursions on ship. They contacted the company who offered 15% discount. I declined. Shore excursions then offered me an additional 10%. I stated I wanted 50% refund. On return to UK I contacted the tour operator who stated that as I booked via the ship, it was for the ship to make any offer. Tour operator Abercrombi & Kent Sri Lanka. Ship Millennium Celebrity . What a waste of £456 not dollars. Shameful. I spoke with Customer services who stated only 25% refund. BE VERY CAREFUL BOOKING VIA CELEBRITY - IF LARGE AMIUNT OF MONEY FORGET IT
