Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Nice cabin but so expensive

Nice cabin, staff friendly but it's pr7ce gouging at its finest. Gratuity before you leave, added to every bill and extra to wanted to. Internet 45 dollars a day. Was thinking of doing another cruise but not now.

Let down by Celebrity Cruises

Flew to Athens and on Celebrity Infinity for 10 nights, 2nd - 12th February 2024. Arrived at Heathrow Airport to be told by Aegean Airlines that we had no luggage for the hold. Booked a package and as we were going on a cruise, you would expect this to be included. Had to pay 45 euros each. There were about 40 - 50 people that this affected. On arriving at Athens Airport at 3.30am, there was no one there, for our onward journey. We were all left sitting at the airport until approx 9.30am, when someone arrived to tell us that the coach to take us to the ship would arrive in the next 30 minutes or so. WHAT A TOTAL SHAMBLES AND NOT A GOOD START TO THE CRUISE. After visiting Guest Relations onboard, this was sorted a couple of days later. The refund was given as onboard credit. I had $100 onboard credit at time of booking. This was showing on my account on Day 1, but then it disappeared. Another few trips to Guest Relations before this was sorted. WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!! After being told that the luggage on the return flight was sorted, on arrival at the airport we were told that no luggage was included... Again, another 45 euros to pay. There were two different flights, and Celebrity had sorted the later flight, but not ours. On contacting Celebrity, the man that I spoke to was rude and not helpful. He tried telling me that my $100 credit that had been put back onto my account was for the luggage cost. I sent the proof of payment and a refund was given six days later. I sent two emails and not once, did I get any response. Very poor customer service from Celebrity. Only when I called them again, was I told that the refund had been arranged. The lady was very apologetic, and said that my feedback would be passed on. Whether it has or not, I will never know. I would not recommend Celebrity Cruises to anyone due to this.

Paid for Aquaclass on Celebrity Edge

Paid for Aquaclass on Celebrity Edge so we could dine at Blu restaurant. The food was very average and pretty well to the same standard of the free restaurants. Had to queue up some nights to get a table. The entertainment on the ship was average. The Martini bar was dull and an awkward setup. Most of the restaurants had the same meals on the menu. All of the Music in the venues had been reworked to the same tempo which was annoying after a while. Plus the amount of money we had to pay extra from Aud to US was crazy. We spent $400 Aud over our package and ended up paying $600 once converted to US dollars. I also prepaid for a game but I never got the chance to play it. It cost me $118 I asked for a refund and got $86 back due to exchange rate. We were expecting a classy cruise but we were disappointed. Never again….

Celebrity Luxury

Good food, great cabin and wait staff and they take Gouging the customer to the highest level. Having taken seven (7) cruises in 12 months with equivalent shipping lines Cunard and Holland America Line, I think Celebrity takes relieving guests of their money to new heights. Shore Excursions were up to five times the cost of Viator and Get Your Guide. These companies now offer a quality product and still make a profit. They also get you back to the ship on time. The old bogey of "we will leave without you", no longer holds the fear if it once did. Ship tours experience the same delays on land returning from same destinations. Beverages are exorbitant and people on packages have said it encourages them to drink more to get the value. Even at a discount, the drinks package we were offered would need us to drink 5 alcoholic beverages and a coffee to break even. Responsible Service of Alcohol, I think not! Health guidelines indicate Max 2-3 per day for both genders. Cirrhosis here we come! "Safety is our prime concern" really? No self serve laundry so unless you want to decorate your cabin with underwear, you have to pay $US3 plus gratuity for one pair of knickers to be washed and dried. The price of the knickers per unit is less than the laundry cost. I circumvented this impost by buying several pairs of cotton knickers to wear once and throw away. The real laundry gouging gem is the confiscation on boarding of a clothes steamer. There was a massive pile of confiscated steamers to which mine was added, probably more than 100 appliances. The ban on travel irons is certainly valid as they heat metal up to 475°F. Steamers boil water at 212°F so any metal will only heat to that temperature. The real kicker is that they allow hair straighteners to be used in the cabin. They too can heat up to 475°F. Though my scientific knowledge is limited, my math capability says hair straighteners are more likely to cause a fire than a clothes steamer. The cruise industry is recovering well from Covid19 as is the land-based tour industry. I love cruising but after this blatant gouging, I find myself exploring land-based options on my Starlink internet for which I pay each day, the equivalent of my monthly home internet.

Just got back from a far east cruise…

Just got back from a far east cruise that started on the 27th January 24,The staff on the ship we're first class apart from the customer service who were very arrogant.Room was fine but ship is a bit old fashioned now but the worst thing about the cruise was the dining room, not the staff but the food was constantly worm or cold. The food was good quality but if it's not hot it's not good, the poor waiters were run off there feet,I was told they only took 2 thirds of staff back on after COVID.its sells it's self as a 5* but this ship was not,a 3.5 at best,it was a 4.5 out of 5 when we last went with them in 2019,also they have lost my three bottles of alcohol given in when boarding.

Just returned from Eclipse cruise to South America

Just returned from Eclipse cruise to South America and Antarctica - firstly the experiences of seeing Antarctica, Tierra del Fuego, Port Stanley , Puerto Madryn - ice bergs, whales, albatross, penguins etc was amazing and is an experience which could have been enjoyed from any cruise provider. This review is about Celebrity Eclipse re Celebrity Cruises. We have been with Celebrity 7 times and have noticed a steady decline - in you put a rotten apple in the barrel it lowers the rest of the apples to the bottom. This is what is happening to Celebrity Cruises - they have lost that “Celebrity Appeal”. We have always travelled Aqua or Retreat because we consider ourselves more discerning travellers. This last cruise - not the fault of the ship itself or the staff. Rather the total lack of appreciation there are those of us that do not “stuff ourselves” morning to night or “drink” morning to night”. This entire cruise was dominated by the needs of the “greedy” masses. There was no consideration for those of a more discerning disposition who paid more to be treated better. If this was a “sunshine cruise” both Aqua and Retreat guests would be lined up with the “beached whales” “drinkers” “eaters” and smokers - there was no where to go to escape the “grazers” - sorry but I say it as I see it. Celebrity are slowly being dragged down to the lowest denominator i.e those that pay the least and eat and drink the most. My advice - don’t waste your money on Aqua or Retreat you are not treated any differently. In summary - Celebrity Cruises has totally lost its CLASS I say it as I have been treated.

Can’t understand the negative reviews

Can’t understand the negative reviews, most seem to be around cancellations. We had our first cruise with Celebrity last year to Scandinavia and it was fabulous. The food and service were outstanding, cannot wait to go on another cruise with them, highly recommended.

Don't put down a deposit

Don't put down a deposit. Once they get it, and something happens that requires you to cancel, even over 3 months before the cruise, they'll not return it. It is not as if you have taken anyone's time. It's all electronic at that point. And plenty of time for them to book the cabin. Just pure greed on their part. I know they have a forfeiture policy. But, change is constant, and they make money off of you when it happens. My policy is to never do business again with a floating hotel company that rips you off, based on a ridiculous excuse. Change the policy.
