Review summary

Southwest Airlines receives a significant amount of criticism from customers, with many expressing disappointment in recent changes and service quality. While some reviewers appreciate the airline's flexible cancellation policy and have had positive experiences over the years, a majority highlight issues such as poor customer service, unexpected baggage fees, and flight cancellations without proper notification. Customers report feeling misled by promotional offers and frustrated by the lack of assistance from staff when problems arise. Long-time travelers lament the decline in service quality, noting that the airline now resembles others in the industry that they once distinguished themselves from. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily negative, with many consumers feeling that Southwest has lost its edge.

SWA now like other airlines

SWA has a duopoly on flying to Fort Lauderdale. I had to change my flight. The price went from $188 to $464. Congratulations SWA you are now like the other airlines.

Southwest Airlines is garbage

Southwest Airlines is garbage, trash, everything else I can think of. The flights were all delayed and all sorts of messed up. The staff didn’t know anything, overall just a horrendous experience. I will probably never fly with southwest again.

Grade F: 3 time in 3 straight weeks SW can’t run…

3 time in 3 straight weeks SW can’t run on time. This time for starters flight was oversold and no one wanted to give up their seat. Second even with being delayed waiting for someone to give up there seat we had to wait for flight attendants.!!! 3 leave gate and immediately are told not taking off due to weather. So let’s sit on a sold out plane for over and hour waiting to take it off. F SW airlines. I can drive to my destination faster and is obviously the way to go. And cheaper as well. 3 weeks straight. Not just an isolated incident.

Why would I use this airlines again?

Flight was suppose to leave at 8:30 PM. Delayed all the way till 10 PM than cancelled, and got rebooked for a flight the next day at 6:30 PM. Rented a car and drove home, so I was able to make it to work that day. No reimbursement what's so ever for the rental car. Got four vouchers for 100 dollars each though! Which I am never going to use, because I am never going to use Southwest Airlines ever again.

NO REFUND

I had to cancel a my trip due to corona virus and they will not issue a refund. Told me I have to book a trip before my funds expire this year or I just lose the money.😡🤬 I’m so outraged! I heard Delta gives refunds for any situation and their service and planes are a lot better so I’ll be flying with delta from now on and leave these rip offs alone. I’ll never fly with southwest again.

WHAT HAPPENED SOUTHWEST?

Back in the day, Southwest was the best airline to fly domestically in the states. I do not know what happened. This last trip has been the worst flight experience I have ever encountered. To start my trip, I booked my flights with a longer, 2 hour layover to ensure a slight delay would not hinder my travel. This still was not the case. Southwest changed the gate and plane in Norfolk, resulting in a delay. Next, we boarded and waited for over an hour to just get gas in the plane. Meanwhile, planes scheduled after mine were boarding and taking off, in the original gate my flight was supposed to be. Almost 2 hours later, we took off. I knew I was cutting my layover short at that point, but we were scheduled to arrive with just enough time to spare. I sprinted to my gate, to see my next flight's plane sitting there. The ramp to get on was still connected to the airplane, but no one was there to check me in. I frantically looked around for someone to help me, but no one was in the area. I had to watch my plane leave without me. I then got a text stating they had rescheduled me to the next day in the evening. I went and talked to a Southwest representative, who helpes change my flight to earlier in the day, but would not offer any other flights to the surrounding airports in LA for the evening. I requested they compensate and put me in a hotel, as I now had to stay overnight. I was informed that they would NOT put me in a hotel because they were not responsible for me missing my flight. They blamed the flight control in Norfolk, instead of taking responsibility for being very unorganized, resulting in 9 people missing their flight (to Ontario; there were many more traveling to other places). I talked to another representative to see if I could get a better boarding position, as I had the boarding position B1 prior to them sending my plane off. They had given me C13, which is considerably worse. They would still not compensate me at all. I have been unable to talk to a customer service representative, but if this is how Southwest treats thwir customers now, I will not be back. I did my research during the extra time I had of sitting in the airport overnight, and apparently Southwest has the highest delayed flights percentage. Two years ago, this was unheard of. Their motto of "flying the friendly skies" does not uphold. Its a real shame how far this flight company has fallen.

We already got a short delay for take off which wasn’t a big deal but the entire flight they wouldn’t allow us to use the restroom or get up at all. Then we have to turn around due to lightning and land which put us behind another few minutes. Then they say they can deplane us and now it’s been 1 1/2 and I’m still stuck on this damn plane with no way off…. no updates, begging for the bathroom, no food, no water, and no exit. To say I’m pissed while I’m sitting in this airplane typing this is an understatement! I am furious!!!!!

Southwest cancelled our flight at the…

Southwest cancelled our flight at the last minute and couldn’t get us on another flight until the next afternoon. This caused us to loose several hundred dollars in non refundable lodging because it was last minute. For our original flight we checked in when we were supposed to and had good seat assignments which was key because we are traveling with our 13 year old daughter. New seat assignments on rebooked flight are at the end on an overbooked flight so no chance we’ll sit together. When I asked Paige at the BNA ticket counter if she would comp a seat assignment upgrade because of the considerable inconvenience and expense this issue has caused, she refused with the worst comment in customer service “I’m just following the rules.” BUT offered to SELL us an upgrade. So #southwest wants to charge me to rectify a problem THEY caused.

Cancelled flight from Orlando two hours…

Cancelled flight from Orlando two hours before. The next flight was supposed to leave at 5:20 and ended up leaving the gate at 6:45. We then sat on the tarmac for an hour due to weather that they knew was inbound but we sat at the gate for the additional hour so they could work out the connection problems they created. The best is yet to come. We arrived at Dallas at approximately 9:45 and were told that we had to wait on the tarmac for a gate to open. Terrible business operations, this is your home base and you own all the gates. Won’t fly Southwest again!!! Waited 1/2 hour for a gate to open🙄

Horrible

Horrible! Added a very inconvenient stop both directions, 2 hours late in both directions. I got approval for my pup (and a $180 surprise fee later!) when reservation was made, then had to cram him under seat (& couldn't move during 50 minute layover - me or the dog.) Animal ABUSE! He's flown on my lap for 14 years. Yep, I'm getting older and cranky but will NEVER fly SW again.

Flights are delayed in both directions

Flights are delayed in both directions, with the return flight delayed more than 2 hours. Gicen the potential missed connection, I booked flights with a three-hour layover which turned into a five-plus-hour one. Post-pandemic Southwest is not the same airline any more. So sad.

The WORST

Today at the airport I had a terrible experience with an SWA boarding agent. I happen to be traveling with my in-flight pet. I did not originally book with SouthWest but missed the original JetBlue flight, so ended up purchasing a ticket on SWA instead. The agent who sold me my ticket and issued a boarding pass did not mention anything about not being able to bring a carry-on in addition to the small dog in his bag. This was not a policy expressed prior to going through security etc. As a result, I had my important items in my carry-on and planned accordingly. This included medication and tech items. When I got to the gate, someone announced that folks who needed additional time to board the plane should go to the gate. I did so and immediately was told without a hint of politeness or consideration that I could not have a carry-on. If I did not check the bag "I WOULD NOT BE LET ON PLANE." It is stressful to be talked to like this and aggravating to shuffle belongings around at the last second at some jerk's whim. I would be more flexible if communication was improved. I believe that I was only singled out because I made the choice to notify staff I needed a few extra moments to board as it says in the highlighted section of the airline’s website. If I had not asked for an extra minute, it seems unlikely I would be ordered around like this. It's not ok to change policy at the last second and be so rude about it and then not expect any frustration in return. Being ordered around like a criminal in response to trying to have basic accommodations is not ok. I do not "look disabled" but suffer setbacks in panic and related issues, especially in the airport. A little consideration goes a long way. Even normal levels of human consideration for the customer would be leagues ahead of the experience I had with the airline.

Rude Flight Attendant

My friends and I take an annual trip and we always use Southwest, however, after this flight we may reconsider our options. The flight was full with no empty seats. There were 15 in our group. We were all seated strategically in the back of the plane. We have a friend who is a larger man who sat in the aisle seat with 2 other friends. The flight attendant approached the two sitting in the inner seats and ask for their names. They were very confused as to why. The flight attendant proceeds to say “we would like to compensate you for not having enough room.” She was very vulgar with her words and paid no mind to him as if he was not sitting there and a plane full of people did not hear her. This is the most disgusting thing that I have witnessed in a very long time! It was embarrassing, humiliating, unprofessional, and not a bit empathetic for the man she was speaking about. I have worked in travel/hospitality for 24 years. I understand that the lack of line level staff is causing the industry to choose unqualified candidates for these positions. This should not exclude behavioral interviewing to at least try to fill positions with the “right” people for the job. This is not what we would expect from Southwest Airlines and I hope that you address this situation with the appropriate departments and people. I also feel that he is owed nothing less than at least and apology for the humiliation that she caused.

Don't ever pay for business class on Southwest! The only upgrade is that you get to board sooner into the same seats. No other special perks whatsoever. Complete waste of money.

Southwest Airlines = Prickway Express

This moronic firm is run by a pack of douche*ags who could give less than a sweet @#$% about anyone, and I mean ANYONE! Our return flight from Chicago to Albany was cancelled, just like that, on a day HUNDREDS of flights were cancelled. They offered us NO assistance in locating a hotel room, a cab company, not a meal voucher...not even a fuc*ing bottle of water. One customer service agent (the one out of three without a big mouth) was able to book us onto a flight the next morning, but thanks to the rest of those useless scum*ags we spent the night sleeping in wheelchairs by gate 25. We are both in our late 60's and partially disabled.

Booked a non-stop flight months in…

Booked a non-stop flight months in advance for my moms 85th birthday. A few hours prior to departure on the day of the flight, I get a notice the flight is canceled & I need to rebook. When I go to rebook it shows an alternate flight and when I click on it an “ERROR” appears, and says that flights no longer available. Either I need the other ones showing. All the other people flying into Indianapolis from all other locations there are no cancellations they’re all on time. I got another notice I’m booked the following day but instead of a nonstop flight the entire trip is going to take eight hours… completely unacceptable. SOUTHWEST AIRLINES SUCKS for making me miss this important milestone for my mother, that will never be repeated.

TERRIBLE FLIGHT - Nice help

Last week we flew from Spokane to Houston. 22 hours. There was a 3 hour delay in Spokane for a computer hitch, then when we got to Denver, we waited 4 hours for our flight, then we were sent to another gate for a 3 hour wait and that flight was cancelled because there was no crew, only pilots. We were sent to another flight where we waited 2 hours for pilots, another 1 hour wait and once aboard the plane another hour because the plane was overloaded and people had to get off. Once landing in Houston we waited 30 minutes in the plane because there were no people to park and disembark the plane. ---- Major flight staff problems --- Meanwhile there was a Ms Ochoa working the Denver counter at the cancelled flight entrance who was very nice, worked hard to make passengers comfortable and pushed my wheelchair between gates making sure I was as comfortable as possible. THANKS MS OCHOA -- and also I THANK Ryan for trying his best to push me to the distant baggage pick up area even though he had another job to do. ""They added a star to my rating""

Wish I could give SW 0 STARS

Wish I could give SW 0 STARS. I have flown this airline so many times and have given them a chance over and over. This last flight was it. Never flying this airline again. I always pay extra for early bird and 2x now have had ub par flight attendants and low class rude passengers saving seats for folks that are literally the last people to board. Rude passengers, sub par flight attendants, lined up like cattle extremely small and dated seating makes me literally hate this airline. Paid 100.00 extra for a broken window and ignorant attendant blocking and saving seats for what looked to be a friend. You Suck!!
