I underwent a left total knee replacement at Nuffield Health, Highgate Hospital on 29.10.24, and was discharged home on 01.11.24.
Previous investigations, X-ray, scan, consultation with the surgeon Mr Nwaboku happened about 6 weeks beforehand; there was then a short delay as further cardiac tests were required.
The option of anaesthesia, spinal or general was fully explained by the anaesthetist; I opted for general.
Every aspect of the treatment I received was exceptionally good. All of the staff in Alexandra Ward did everything possible to aid my recovery, with comfort, support, assistance, encouragement, professional caring attitudes.
The initial post-operative days are not easy, but early rehab with mobilisation is essential, this requires excellent management.
The difficulties which I experienced (pain, low blood pressure, nausea) were effectively managed by the medical team, all of whom helped me enormously.
Choice of menu and quality of food/ drinks available was very good, served by Elizabeth, always helpful, encouraging and charming.
Healthcare Assistants and Nursing staff, day and night, always available to respond quickly to calls, I never felt I was being a nuisance, always treated with respect and professionalism. Pablo, Ornela, Mes Portuguese, plus many others looked after me so well.
The 24-hour Resident Dr Emmanuele conducted further tests when I was having difficulties, day or night.
Physio Team, Gladys liaised to ensure movement towards rehab goals, early supervised safe mobilising with frame then crutches then longer walks and steps/stairs. Although discharged after 2 or 3 days, a regime of future self-managed goals is fully explained, documented, and equipment provided.
Pharmacy Service monitored my existing medication, and provided additional ones, stronger pain-control, anti-embolism, including those for post-discharge.
I am aware that an Administrative Team coordinates, but only had contact with them indirectly, receiving essential documentation.
Post-discharge I am always able to contact the hospital in case of queries or difficulties. Further appointments are for Physio, Staple removal (2 weeks post-op), and surgical review by Mr Nwaboku (4-weeks post-op).
As a 79 year-old woman, there was natural fear/apprehension at undergoing such a major operation, but I have no regrets whatever. I have been 100% satisfied with my treatment during the course of my knee replacement at Nuffield Health, and wish to thank everyone involved. It could not have been better, I consider myself fortunate and am very grateful.
