Review summary

Novo receives significant criticism from customers, with many expressing frustration over account management and customer service. A common complaint is the abrupt closure of accounts without warning, leaving users feeling blindsided and unsupported. Reviewers frequently describe the customer service as inadequate, citing long hold times and unhelpful responses, particularly during urgent situations like fraud. Despite these issues, some users appreciate the ease of setting up an account and the overall banking experience when things run smoothly. However, the overwhelming sentiment reflects dissatisfaction, with many advising potential customers to reconsider their choice. Overall, Novo struggles to meet customer expectations, leading to a predominantly negative perception.

I think Novo is run by teenagers.

I think Novo is run by teenagers. Incompetent, uncaring, deceitful - nothing like a professional banking experience.

If you look through the history of Novo…

If you look through the history of Novo complaints you will see my first one from a few months ago. NOW I decided to check my account after several weeks, knowing the bank took all of my money, and lo and behold all of my money had been returned. Probably a result of my complaint to the government. I attempted to retrieve my money and move it to my personal bank account, NOT Novo. I get a message on the screen that I have to contact support. I contact support and they finally tell me I can’t take my money because my account is not “eligible”. I have contacted the government again and am hoping for success. Since being told my account is not eligible I have gone on the Novo website every day and tried to retrieve MY money with no luck. DO NOT USE THIS BANK!!!

Potentially illegal per the Electronic Fund Transfer ACT.

UPDATE AUG 22: ISSUE NEVER FIXED. Still emailing me to try to force me to fund a jeapordized account. Illegal, too. Mailed parent bank (Middlesex) too. Blocking and moving on. Enjoy your charge off, Novo. You earned it. _________________ In JUNE, I attempted to close my Novo bank account due to multiple breaches in account security (not caused by Novo, but by external platforms connected to the account). I was told the account was closed, and I breathed a sigh of relief. Recently, I was informed that I must fund this compromised account to pay the attached Novo credit card. I offered to pay through safer means — check, money order, or another bank. Novo refused. Multiple times. This bumps right up against the Electronic Funds Transfer Act (15 U.S. Code § 1693), which prohibits coercing the use of an account that exposes the consumer to unauthorized or unsafe electronic transactions. Refunding a closed and vulnerable account just to pay a credit card opens the door to multiple unauthorized pulls. Novo — your customer service means nothing. Whether its a reply on here or directly within the app, ALL you have shouted so far is "You must re-fund the account" Let's be crystal clear. You are dancing on the edge of legal violation. I’ve already filed with the CFPB, and further reports are underway with the FTC and my state’s business regulatory division.

I applied for a business checking…

I applied for a business checking account with Novo, submitted all the required documentation including a clear selfie and valid driver’s license, and was ultimately denied, with no specific explanation. The email I received listed vague reasons like “risk tolerance” or “third-party data,” none of which applied to my situation. My business is a completely legal and legitimate service platform, not in a restricted industry. Despite following up, I found that their advertised support email didn’t even work, which is extremely concerning for a financial institution. What’s worse is that there’s no clear appeals process or any real way to speak to a human about the decision. It felt like an automated system made a snap judgment and that was it. I’m honestly glad I wasn’t approved, because this experience made it clear Novo is not a serious banking partner if you value customer service, transparency, or even basic communication.

Great bank until you need support

I have been a customer of Novo since 2020 and have overall been pleased with them as I find a lot of the features they offer to be very great for a business. However, they are only great for a business if you never have any issue where there is a banking error that you need them to act on. The Novo customer service department/front line representative seems like nothing more than a receptionist that redirects you to the app to submit your issues or provides you with a human touch to repeat their policies over and over to you again. Fine. It's an online bank, it what we signed up for, and understand that's how things work. The point where Novo starts to feel like not a great bank is when the issue you have, such as an issue of being overcharged by a merchant and you need to dispute the charge, that’s when you start to feel how little Novo communicates with you. In my case (which began in May), when I disputed a charge with the bank after the merchant failed to refund a charge that they admitted was done in error. When disputing the charge with Novo, I provided copies of the email exchange between myself and the offending merchant with dialogue that showed where the merchant acknowledged the error on their part, stated they would refund the over charged transaction, and never did, which is what resulted in the dispute process being started with Novo on May 14th. On May 21st, I got an email that said they have “Investigated and validated the dispute and initiated the chargeback process with the merchant.” When I followed up with Novo on June 9th for the status of my issue, I asked to speak with someone in the dispute department for an update on my claim. The customer service told me that there was no way that I could speak to anyone in their dispute department about my claim. I voiced my concern and asked for clarity because I had not gotten any updates on my claim and was unclear why the funds had not been returned to my account if everything had been validated. Accepting that I would not be able to speak to someone in their back-office department, I asked for some type of confirmation of my call that included what we discussed and would allow me to follow up if the funds were not returned. What I received was communication that spoke about their process and a blurb that said "Our disputes team will communicate any necessary information or updates with you." On July 2nd, I reached out to Novo because I had not received any updates from the dispute department and trying to act in good faith by not bogging down the customer service rep with my desire to find out what’s going on, I started by asking to speak with a supervisor. This is where in my 5 years of banking with them, I started to feel concerned. I was told "there are no supervisors for customers to speak with over the phone" and at most they could have someone "email me." Through a bit of back and forth to determine if I was being told there are supervisor or no supervisors to escalate a call to, I acknowledged their "policy" and asked while customers are not able to speak with a supervisor over the phone, are they as customer service reps able to speak with their direct supervisor over the phone. Begrudgingly, they customer service rep said they could. I then asked for the customer service rep to be the proxy between me and their supervisor to ask about my case and why I had not heard anything about my case from something that seemed like a simple solution based on the information I was provided in my initial filing. Returning to the phone, the representative started repeating things that I already knew and then went into their policy length and let me know they “the merchant should be refunding the charge” and “that I needed to be patient. PROBLEM, if the merchant had returned the funds, I would not have initiated a dispute with Novo. I asked for clarity as this merchant had now not returned these funds after 45 days of the overcharged, I’ve not gotten any status updates from Novo since May 21st, and now that it’s clear that unlike traditional banks Novo does not put the funds back in your account until the merchant returns the funds, I asked what do I if the merchant does not return the funds. The summary from the customer service rep was: (1) you just have to wait 120 days for the investigation to finish, (2) we can not give you a projection on when the dispute would be resolved, but it can take up to 120 days, (3) the dispute may resolve faster, but the latest your dispute could be resolved is September 11th. Imagine being out a large amount due to an error that was not something you did and hearing that it would take you 4 months to get that large amount back into your account?!?! Luckily my amount is small, but going through this process with them makes me rethink my loyalty to them. Novo IS great, UNTIL you have a problem.

Not a real bank. Fake customer support number

They are responsive until you open an account and make a deposit then you won’t hear back at all. Can’t get any person to reply. The customer support phone number is fraudulent it goes to an automated number saying that the number does not exist. I don’t even know if this is a really company. I need someone to reply how is this legal.

Less than one star

I banked with Novo for my LLC for nearly 3 years. Novo closed my account without any advanced notice or notification of what happened. i tried to login one day and I couldn't log in. I tried to reset my password and it wouldn't send me an email. I had to search for any contact information because they don't post phone numbers and their preferred method of contact is logging in to the app and chatting with them which I couldn't do. when I finally received an email, they had closed my account due to no balance for 130 days. That was inaccurate. I received a deposit from and employer the last day of every month for the entire time I was a customer and then I transferred those funds out. I didn't have a zero balance for even 30 days let alone 130. I asked if they checked my activity at all and the customer service rep became rude and combative. I was trying to login to check my monthly deposit and now I'll have to figure out how to get those funds since Novo closed my account. I would never work with them again and wouldn't recommend them to anyone

DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR MONEY

DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR MONEY! They are not a bank, they just handle accounts from different bank institutions (you can Google this). Our card and money was stolen, we called them on time to report, but they allowed the transactions to get processed because they couldn't do anything a regular bank can do (like putting a hold on the transactions and/or decline them). Now they say they are not responsible for that money. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH AND GO WITH A REAL BANK, THEY ARE NOT ACCOUNTABLE AND THEY WILL SHUT DOWN ON YOU. I mean look at the reviews before this one....for June 2025 only (so far) 10 out of 12 reviews are extremely negative. Just don't.

No help with debit card double charges

Been a customer since 2021. Currently have an issue with a vrbo property manager who charged me twice and placed a hold on my debit card even though reservation was canceled. It has been 10 days, over $2000 is being held and Novo tells me they can do nothing.

I gave it an honest try

I really wanted to like Novo, but the customer support experience makes it impossible to recommend. When something goes wrong, you’re met with slow responses, vague answers, and no real effort to resolve the issue. It feels like they rely on automation and stall tactics instead of actually helping customers. If support matters to you, look elsewhere.

Frustrating and Unfair Experience with Novo Mastercard Issued Through Middlesex Federal

I’ve been through an extremely frustrating and disappointing experience with Novo and Middlesex Federal Savings regarding unauthorized transactions on my business Mastercard debit card. My card was stolen, and I immediately reported the theft and unauthorized charges. Despite promptly following Novo’s instructions and complying with all requirements, my dispute was denied without any evidence or investigation results provided. I was forced to wait unnecessarily before filing a dispute, and after doing so, was denied provisional credit. Even worse, Novo blocked me from directly accessing their fraud and dispute resolution teams, leaving me stuck in limbo. Middlesex Federal Savings, the actual issuer of my Mastercard debit card, told me they can’t handle my claim and that Novo is responsible — while Novo keeps deflecting responsibility. This whole ordeal violates Mastercard’s Zero Liability policy for business debit cards, which is supposed to protect cardholders like me from unauthorized charges when theft is promptly reported. Yet, neither Novo nor Middlesex Federal has honored this protection. The lack of transparency, poor customer support, and refusal to take responsibility have caused me significant stress, financial loss, and wasted time. I strongly caution anyone considering Novo for banking or business debit cards. This experience has been far from the seamless, secure service they advertise.

Locked out of Novo Account

I lost access to the email associated with the account. The email belongs to a website that doesn't exist anymore. The domain is gone. I can't login to the Novo account. I can't get customer service support anywhere without the Novo app which I can't login to. Fantastic. No contact info anywhere. What a joke of a bank.

Dumbest most frustrating digital bank

Easily the dumbest and most frustrating digital bank. The digital deposit limits require q monthly approval to allow you to deposit money in the account. You have to make three requests each month and you can request one change at a time. The per check amount the daily amount and monthly amount each require a request and approval. Banking for dummies. HORRIBLE. I HAVE TO GO BACK TO A BRICK BANK BECAUSE THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR A GROWING BUSINESS.
