A very strange case

A very strange case - I read that they went bankrupt in January 2019 and their clients switched to other operators. But, my friend made a switch to them in October 2021 and the gas card works normally ... What is going on ?????

Closed down by Ofgem.

Ofgem closed down Economy Energy in January 2019 following an official investigation into the supplier. In June 2018, the Economy Energy suffered backlash after customers complained about money being removed from their bank accounts without notice or explanation. The main reason for complain was that customers insisted that their accounts had been in order and that they owed no money to the supplier. This signaled the beginning of the end for the supplier. Customer complaints led to Ofgem opening a formal investigation, and at the beginning of 2019, the regulatory body banned the supplier from taking on new customers. One week later, the energy company ceased trading.

Do not use this company

Do not use this company. They owe me £500 and will give no time scale of when it will be returned. They told me not to cancel my direct debit and then continued to take more money when my account was supposedly closed and then like other people got demanding emails when I actually stopped the direct debit. I don’t think they have the money to pay people back!

When fixed rate deal was about to end

When fixed rate deal was about to end, I asked what their best deal was. Still waiting to hear so switched. That was in July, so the balance is about £300 and it's now November, I have only contacted them three times asking them to refund my money back to me. Customer Service is very good at fobbing off but useless at action. So contacted them again (4th), whilst writing this review, and received this reply "I can see the refund was requested a week ago. There is currently a backlog at the moment the exact amount I am not aware of I do apologise so I am unable to provide a timescale". I seem to remember this is was the same reply last time, I bet they haven't got a backlog in taking money by direct debit from customers. It didn't help that they insisted on increasing the amount of my direct debits a few months earlier of course, but I guess that was more about making them money, or their balance sheet looking good, than about looking after customers. So overall Avoid. Update, 5th Dec, still no payment, I decided not to email Kara below as special treatment of my account by Economy Energy would give a misleading review.

Would definitely give no stars if an…

Would definitely give no stars if an option. Came to the end of a deal and the options were poor and so I went elsewhere. Final meter readings given and a change of address as I also happened to move house. They advised me to cancel my direct debit. No final bill available at the time(refund expected). I then received an email with a warning letter attached (written to my old address) telling me to contact them as my direct debit had been cancelled. I made contact, they apologised, said it was sent in error. I asked them to chase my final bill. Later the same day, I received another email me warning about my cancelled direct debit again. Not impressed, I called and eventually spoke to 'Abi in North East Office'. She has informed me that I am due a refund but they will not give me any indication whatsoever as to when I will receive it. They have a massive backlog. Classic case of getting you in with a reasonable deal and then treating you badly thereafter. Big mistake!! Standard generic response when I have already supplied my account details. Waste of time.

Appalling Company - avoid this lot at all costs

Stuck with this bunch for a year on a fixed rate deal during which time the customer service was laughably bad. So the deal ends and I'm moved onto a variable tariff involving a cost increase of over 40%. I switched supplier more than six weeks ago with a total credit balance of more than £315 on the account. If I owed them this amount they would no doubt have taken it straight away. Needless to say I'm still waiting to be repaid and got an email response today basically saying they'll pay it when they're ready to pay it, no timescale offered. In the meantime they tried to take more money from my bank account despite the supply having finished and a £300+ credit on the account. If I hadn't cancelled the direct debit they'd now be sitting on £400+ of my money and telling me to go whistle when I ask for it to be returned. They have achieved the rare status of being both utterly useless and utterly shameless. I'm giving it until the end of this month then approaching the Ombudsman. For anyone thinking of switching to Economy Energy my honest advice would be don't touch them with a bargepole!

Desperately poor company

Desperately poor company - double bill upfront, but do not tell you the amount. I chose to leave after they said my dual fuel bill would go up by £400 in a year. as I was over £400 in credit after only 5 months so I expect a refund, my new supplier gave final reading 6 weeks ago but they still will not produce my final bill, they say 6-8 weeks now, however every week previous to this they say "the bill is being made up" and to call next week, a really drawn out automated phone answering system takes over 5 minutes before you get into a queue- I hope I get my money - Also there customer service is unprofessional, I received a email addressing my complaints but they only answered on points where they were technical correct ( not customer friendly ) - I replied to their email asking for them to clarify my other complaints - no reply for 4 weeks now. - Avoid this company looks to me as if they are holding my money to gain what little interest they can from it - I regret ever having sign up with this company.

second review on Economy Energy

second review on Economy Energy, ended my contract and received my final bill after four weeks, I could then apply to get my over payments back, had live chat this morning to enquire what the delay was told they are changing the system and could not tell me when I would receive my refund. Truly a company you cannot trust. After the first review I posted I was contacted by the company and asked if they could contact me to see if there was anyway they could improve there service, I agreed to this but missed there call, they left a message saying they ring back but never did. If you would like to get in touch my account number is listed below

Worst experience ever!

Worst experience ever! Switch to different supplier in August, still waiting for my refund of £240, first had to request my refund, done that on 1st of October, now that money should have been refunded Economy Energy said my actual meter reading are estimated, but they are actual readings supplied by new provider. So here we are again, I assume have to go through the same stages, request my money, and wait and wait and wait a bit more. Terrible company, avoid at all cost! Every single advisor says different lies. You may save, but the time on a phone and headaches you get, definitely not worth. Looks else where.

We (seemingly) don't do refunds....

Still waiting on a (thankfully) miniscule refund on my gas account after leaving in April. Took them till August to come up with a bill. Nearly December and still no sign. (They seemed a bit more eager to chase me for 50p I owed on electric - sending me a letter (presumably at a cost of 67p)). The last few months have seen some complaint emails answered, a lie told about a refund being initiated, and today's top response saying they cannot tell me when they'll see fit to give me back my own money. AVOID AT ANY AND ALL COSTS.
