Economy Energy has room for improvement based on customer feedback. Customers particularly appreciate service and professional, though some mention concerns about customer service and communication.
Very rude operator who asked me to repeat what I was saying 5 times then she hung up on me
A very strange case - I read that they went bankrupt in January 2019 and their clients switched to other operators. But, my friend made a switch to them in October 2021 and the gas card works normally ... What is going on ?????
Ofgem closed down Economy Energy in January 2019 following an official investigation into the supplier. In June 2018, the Economy Energy suffered backlash after customers complained about money being removed from their bank accounts without notice or explanation. The main reason for complain was that customers insisted that their accounts had been in order and that they owed no money to the supplier. This signaled the beginning of the end for the supplier. Customer complaints led to Ofgem opening a formal investigation, and at the beginning of 2019, the regulatory body banned the supplier from taking on new customers. One week later, the energy company ceased trading.

I received the email below on the 20th Nov, it's now 1617h 27th and still no refund, not looking promising, no surprise with this company!! It's only a couple of hundred pounds, COME ON, PAY MY MONEY BACK TO ME!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Nigel. I do apologise that you haven’t received your refund yet. I have now requested for this to be fast tracked. This will be received within 10 working days. I’m sorry for the inconvenience caused by this delay. Kind Regards, --------------------------------------------- Kara Singleton Social Media Executive Economy Energy ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Despite numerous requests by phone and online for a refund of approx £200 since switching my account 12th Sept I am still being fobbed off with excuses. V bad customer service leaving me feeling that they have no intention of paying my money back to me hence am considering contacting the Ombudsman. Hello Kara, thank you for your response, I have emailed you as requested, regards, Nigel.
I made a terrible mistake signing up to this supplier. I left them two months ago, and they still haven’t refunded my credit balance despite several calls and emails. I’ve raised a formal complaint a week ago, and they’ve not even responded to that.
Would be a no star review if that was possible- I only moved to economy energy in July and switched away in October. Disgraceful company to deal with. They take double payment on day 1 - so I don't get into arrears apparently- don't make me laugh I've never been in arrears with anything in my life - unlike economy energy who now owe me between £200-£300. Can't be sure as they won't send me final bill although have confirmed they have had final readings for over 4 weeks. They treat complaints like a joke - telling me they were just closing my initial complaint down as they have dealt with it - despite it having been addressed to their CEO. Don't touch this company with a bargepole- judging by other reviews in here I'll be waiting a long time for my money and it looks like I may need to take court action to get it back.
THIS IS ONE OF THE WORST COMPANY I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS ...PLEASE SWITCH YOUR SUPPLIER TO ANOTHER BECAUSE THEY JUST DONT CARE. I HAVE A NEW BORN BABY WHO IS 2 DAYS OLD MY HOUSE IS FREEZING AS THE PAY AS YOU GO METER IS INDICATING A FAULT ON THE SCREEN SO SPOKE TO ECONOMY ENERGY REGARDING THE ISSUE WAS TOLD CART DO NOTHING UNTIL MORNING HOW BAD IS THAT, I HAVE A ILL CHILD AND A NEWBORN WHO NEEDS HEATING FACILITY BUT YOU REFUSE TO SEND SOME ONE OUT...SWITCHING SUPPLIERS FIRST THING TOMORROW
If I could give zero stars I would. Absolutely terrible customer service. Staff are rude, unhelpful & incompetent. According to them I’ve built up £300+ worth of debt in the last few months first I heard of it today & then threatened the debt collectors, no letters, no emails, no phone calls before today. My meter readings in the last 18 months haven’t recorded despite submitting them every month when prompted. Do yourself a favour, avoid like the plague.
Absolutely awful company, beware. Slow and out of date website, constantly ask for meter readings when you have already left them. Still waiting for a refund 6 weeks after closing my account, as per previous the small claims court seems the way to go. Tried webchat and email but a total waste of time. Appalling.
Ok until you need them. Then everything changes. I have called in 4 times with 3 calling in one day as my smart meter display had stoped working and I was unable to see the balance. Because of this I topped up the meter. The following day (today) the electric stoped. I call them again but now it was too late we had no electricity. I was told someone would be out in 4 hours, only 3 hours in I had a call to say the wanted me to try something that I allready tried on the first call and the visit was cancelled. I then had to wait another 4 hours. The first call I marked was at 13:30 and now I may have to wait until 21:00 after an 1.5 hour call. They have said everything looks ok on their end and the account is in credit so there is clearly an issue with the meter that I have been trying to report
If you are due a refund read on .... I have left 2 previous reviews regarding this Company. I switched in October and yes you guessed it, had a credit balance of nearly £400.00. It is clear from the reviews on here that Economy Energy for whatever reason are unable to action credit refunds to their customers in a timely manner. If you are owed money you have 2 options - the Ombudsman or take them to the small claims court. I did the latter but please note only when I had evidence of the refund I was due i.e. copies of the final bill on my account showing the credit. I sent a pre action letter to Economy Energy on 7th November giving them 7 days to refund my money. No response, so at 5:00 pm on 14th November I went on the MCOL website and issued a claim. It is very user friendly. By 5:00 pm on 15th November I had a full refund in my bank account. This may not work for everyone but in my case it was certainly clear that a County Court claim took me to the top of the refund queue. If I had gone to the Ombudsman I would probably be 1 week now into an 8 week waiting game before I got a refund. Economy Energy really do need to address their refund process if they want to stay in the energy business. The Directors must be aware and as with many companies these days, the incompetence at the top will be its downfall. Consumers are much more savvy now and if they are sensible, carry out a little due diligence on review websites before signing up. Trustpilot alone must be putting off thousands of potential customers for them. A few one line verified positive reviews will not cut it. Wood and trees spring to mind!
Been with this company for 13 months, apart from being difficult to phone them ( long waiting time ) the kept telling me I was in debt as the payments where not covering my usage, it was at the beginning of my contract that they set the payment, now I find they have taken me off my contract without telling me and put me on an expensive rate, on phoning them they said they should have written to me but failed to do so. NOT GOOD ENOUGH GOODBYE TO THEM
