Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

My trip to Antarctica turned out to be…a highly expensive ferry ride

My trip to Antarctica turned out to be the most expensive ferry ride in the world. The ship has a propulsion problem which Celebritywas fully aware of but blamed bad weather as the issue. It is easy when things go right but any company should be measured on how they handle the situation when things go wrong. Very poor customer relations.

This cruise was horrible (Antartica 2018) due to technical problems with cruise line. We spent 12 days out of 14 sailing. Ports of call were cancelled and Celebrity Cruises will not acknowledge their fault. Elizabeth

Horrible cruise

Horrible cruise Left with half propulsion to Antarctica from Buenos Aires with uncaring crew, missing ports, and late arrivals. Most terrible of 37 cruises with hardly an apology or compensation.

Antarctica January 2018

My husband and I were on the Celebrity Infinity which left Buenos Aires for Antarctica on 21st January 2018. We had already been alerted to the fact that due to propulsion problems we would not be calling at Puerto Madryn, one if only 4 ports we were scheduled to call at. As we sailed South we were told that we would be late getting to Ushuia, indeed we only arrived at 4.30 p.m. meaning many who had booked trips were doing them in the dark. On our approach to The Falkland Islands, we were informed that due to stormy weather we would not be visiting and would be going straight to Montivideo. This meant we had 12 consequtive days at sea, only calling at 1 of the 4 ports for a whole day - and that was to get the ship restocked - and one port for an evening. Celebrity maintain this was down to poor weather. If the ship had been in full working order we would not have enountered any bad weather, the fundamental fault was was the poor state of the propulsion system, Celebrity will not take responsibility for that fact. Things often go wrong with ships, planes - any forms of transport, you judge the company on how it deals with these problems and in this case Celebrity is woeful. No customer service at all. 2000 people had a very expensive and very disappointing sail around the Southern Atlantic - not what we paid for. In addition should a ship with propulsion problems be sent to what can be the roughest seas in the world - I think not. The cruise should have been cancelled, the ship repaired and our booking honoured for the 2019 sailings I have no faith whatsoever in Celebrity and will not be cruising with them again.

Chaotic Transfer Santiago to SAN Antonio

In January we were subjected to some of the worst and most disorganised customer services I have ever experienced. Our transfer from our Santiago hotel to the port was horrendous and quite avoidable. Celebrity, sorry their agent, they are never to blame, treated their clients in a way which means Celebrity Never Again. Approximately 200 passengers were told to assemble with their luggage in the quite small hotel lobby to wait for the coaches, there were three coaches. One young lady armed with clipboard, no desk, was expected to check our passport details against her very scruffy and much updated list. She then allocated people to coaches, instead of filling up the first coach and letting it depart all the coaches were filled up bit by bit so some passengers had to sit and wait on the coach for a long time. When all the passengers were finally on the coaches we departed in a convoy which meant, of course, that all of us arrived at the ,so called, cruise terminal at the same time where more chaos ensued. When we finally embarked we complained and were informed that “oh well that is shore side I am ship side” another words “not our problem” Transfers seem to be a weak link with Celebrity, though I believe the service, food and general condition of the ships (this one was Infinity) have deteriated and the over pricing of excursions makes trips on all inclusive, smaller ships our choice for future trips, booked already!

Worst cruising experience ever

Worst cruising experience ever. We were on the Celebrity Infinity for the 14 days Antarctica cruise. We were supposed to have 4 ports of call. The itinerary had so many sea days. What was worse was a few days before the cruise, we were informed that Puerto Madryn is cancelled due to faulty propulsion. How could we have cancelled our trip when everything else was already booked? They assured that the ship was safe. But with one port already cancelled, we arrived late at the first port of Ushuaia. Then, our Falkland Islands port was cancelled as well. Imagine being at sea for 12 days. I was so happy to get out of the ship when we arrived Buenos Aires. We went to Antarctica but did not get to see any penguin ports. It is very disappointing. The ship should have fixed the propulsion problem. It endangered all our lives. We crossed Drake Passage with faulty propulsion. I will never take another Celebrity cruise again knowing that they put business first before passenger safety.

Never, EVER again

Litigation under way and UK consumer groups engaged (ABTA and Which?UK) after Celebrity Cruises broke our contract. Charged £10k to limp around the S Atlantic for two weeks instead of visiting 4 Patagonian ports when they were well aware the propulsion issue would impact our experience AND the lack of propulsion would mean the ship was too dangerous to be at sea (per US Coast Guard). Flat denial of wrongdoing by Celebrity despite 2000 complainants escalated to Board level. Complete disregard for customer service. Also - ship was tired, entertainment was average, food was poor, choices of alcohol even on premium package were very poor. All round awful waste of a significant chunk of money.

Hi Again

Hi Again, follow up of Celebrity after cruise OMG we were told they were the best god help the rest.I returned the survey they sent us listed numerous problems I.E. overcharged ,double charged on 4 occasions fridge was emptied of drinks as stock level never agreed with stock list, booked what we were told were taxi transfer to airport in miami gee what a taxi 42 seater BUS you only find that out when you are off ship .I will admit this is our first cruise but on this experience it will be a long time before we will go again. The ship was lovely food good most staff nice but they state they are an very ethical company please only change towels when really needed ect', then they fill your "stateroom",with enough sales offers to sink the ship, diamonds, watches, art sales, art auctions, blown glass, special dinning extra cost of course! ect. I must stop now or I will no be ethical even as you pass the shops on board you are bombarded with offers from staff celeb' should be proud of staff because they certainly work nonstop at getting your cash . We could not get to Cayman isles due to weather so captain slowed ship from 24 knots to 16 so it took longer to next port boring days at sea .I suppose at the end of the day I expected some kind of response from Celeb but no another case of we got your cash the survey is just a front that we really care .Geo.

Terrific response during Hurricane Irma & More

Celebrity and its captain did an outstanding job keeping us away from any of the effects of Hurricane Irma. The ports of call that were chosen were beautiful, accomodating and very enjoyable. The food was OUTSTANDING as expected and the ship itself was beautiful and extremely clean. Celebrity is a GREAT value and I will be booking another cruise shortly!
