Norovirus Nightmare on Celebrity Ascent — Deeply Disappointing Experience and Insulting Compensation

I joined the Celebrity Ascent in July 2025 from Barcelona for what was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime trip as an Asian traveler—flying 14 hours just to board the ship. It was even more special because I was celebrating my mother’s 70th birthday, a memory we hoped would last a lifetime. However, our dream cruise turned into a nightmare due to a norovirus outbreak onboard. After eating raw oysters at Raw on 5, I became severely ill with incessant vomiting and diarrhea. The worst moment was having to vomit on the tender boat in front of dozens of other passengers—an intensely humiliating experience. We both shared the same food and cabin, yet only I was forcibly quarantined in our tiny cabin for 24 hours. During this time: My mother, despite being a direct contact and eating the same oysters, was allowed to roam the ship, use the buffet, and swim in the pool. How does this make sense as a public health measure? Quarantine care was minimal: food delivery was delayed, and there was barely any communication from staff. I was forced to wash my own soiled clothes, with my mother—who was supposed to be celebrating—helping me clean after the ordeal. After disembarking in Greece, I reached out to Celebrity Cruises asking for fair compensation. Not only did they dismiss my detailed account and timeline, but the compensation offered was shockingly low—an amount that completely ignores the severity of what we went through. It doesn’t even begin to cover the ruined experience for both myself and especially my mother, whose special birthday was overshadowed by these events. Celebrity Cruises blamed outside food sources, despite all my symptoms starting right after the onboard meal. The company’s response felt like a complete disregard for our situation and the basic responsibility they owe to their guests. I’d love to hear from anyone with similar experiences, whether with norovirus outbreaks or appalling compensation responses—especially on this ship or with this brand. Has anyone successfully escalated cases like this through travel insurance or consumer protection? Any tips on getting heard, or did you face the same indifference? How did you deal with ruined milestone trips or personal events? Thank you for listening to my story. I hope Celebrity Cruises takes real responsibility, not just for me, but for all guests who deserve fair treatment—especially when a special trip turns into a disaster through no fault of their own. If you’d like suggestions for specific platforms or additional language for escalation letters, let me know!

Leider neuer Vertriebsweg

O
WAY BELOW OUR EXPECTATIONS

Aqua Class Cabin very small, dated and worn Very small wardrobe & hanging space A single one-person seater couch Cabin attendant useless and intrusive with our personal belongs No refrigerator just a cold box The air conditioning is erratic & difficult to maintain a comfortable temperature The glass on our balcony was damaged & scratched and the railing was mostly rusted Our cabin had a very noisy motor inside a door opposite our cabin which appears to be some sort of pumping station and below the swimming pool with continuous banging & thumping noise transferring into our cabin. Blu Restaurant, for Aqua class guests, there was up to 30 minutes wait for a table, a buzzer was handed to us and told to come back when it buzzed Tables are extremely close together, which results in no romance and no privacy. Blu Restaurant is sold as an “Adults Only” there were children dining in the restaurant The food in the “Blu” Restaurant was OK, nothing like the promotional advertising and mostly service near cold The food in the Buffet restaurant was ok, a good range of choices but cheap quality food, over cooked a but again never hot enough. On sea days the buffet restaurant at lunch time was like a feeding frenzy at the zoo, near impossible to get a table as this was the only restaurant open. The breakfast that can be ordered in the cabin was disgusting everything hard dry & cold. The “Adults Only” solarium is a farce, because it is a major thorough fare on the ship, there are noisy children running around whilst transiting through the solarium to other areas, difficult to get a sun lounge in the solarium The Persian Garden was just a few saunas and a barely warm bench seat The Theatre shows are sooo loud, each night we had to leave after around 20 minutes because we cannot stand the level of the “ear bashing” sound. In the Martini Bar where we enjoy the entertainment, there is a large group of young teenagers, increasing as the days go by to around 20, gathering each evening with unacceptable noisy behaviour, unpleasant for mature many cruise guests and staff make no attempt to quell this disturbing intrusive noise. The majority of Celebrity staff are belligerent and unhelpful when we ask simple questions. The shore excursions were very expensive. The guide on the ones we went on did not speak good English. On three excursions there was torrential rain most of the day. Departing the ship to the coach was a long walk, none of it undercover. We were drenched when boarding the coach therefore in wet cloths & shoes for the length of the tour. The weather restricted the visibility at the attractions and some not accessible due to area being too wet to access. Due to the weather there should have been alternatives arranged. Never again with Celebrity

Celebrity reflection not good

The main thing is the supposed refine dining ,definitely NOT , food dry tasteless and boring ,same food on the 9 nights we had on the reflection ship every night ,would have been better to eat in the buffet upstairs , thought it might improve but sadly didn’t if anything it got worse . Staff in the refine dining where very unprofessional and looked very bored and not interested in their job at all . The matrix deix Michael was very arrogant and condescending and did not want to know . Ship was lovely , entertainment was good until we figured out that the same artists every night played or sang the same songs so became very boring , First time with celebrity and definitely the last Avoid if possible

On a Celebrity Cruise - Get me out of here!!!

On Apex. Nice ship but unless you gamble or want to buy watches or handbags there’s nothing to do. Shambles of a company. Here’s the highlights - call centre tell us water is free. It’s not. They charge $4 a bottle. It’s hot 30C. - Call centre tells you to buy a visa for Egypt. Turns out the ship does that for you. $50 wasted. - Drinks package at $107 per person per day. Or $36 for water, coffee and soft drinks per person per day. - Wifi $400 per device. - Laundry $140 - Tour of Jerusalem you meet at 7am then sit on ship over 2.5 hours to get on the bus. Tour guide is awful. Bus 32C and tour guide / driver try to sell you water. Other half ended up being sick at a petrol station due to heat in bus. No lunch until 3:30pm. - Tour of Giza 30 minutes at pyramids as we don’t have time to waste followed by a 45 minutes stop at a souvenir shop. Tour guide selling 30 minutes camel rides that aren’t on itinerary. - Tour of Ephesus was more a tour of souvenir shops while being stalked by a photographer who wanted $4 a photo. - Staff on ship are nice but no way this is worth the money. Wish I’d never booked it. - Complaint made to Guest Relations. They arranged dinner and drinks at one of their exclusive restaurants as an apology. Booked us in for 18:30. Took order 18:50 then told us drinks only available in upstairs bar from 5pm to 7pm. Left without ordering meal. - Honestly save your money and book with a different company. So far we’ve had a refund for the Jerusalem tour and $50 back for the Egypt visas.

Dreadful Company

Dreadful company with hidden costs. All money making with little interest in providing an enthusiastic experience for customers. The Silhouette ship had a head of entertainment called "Pete," who was far too preoccupied with nurturing his own ego rather than provide decent entertainment. Constantly changing the entertainment schedule. Weeks after my trip I'm still trying to get the company to send me my jewellery that I'd left in my cabin. Fortunately, one of the staff had secured my items and handed them into public relations. They still haven't sent me my items. Its so terribly frustrating and inconvenient. The theatrical productions and bands were great. The food used cheap ingredients. I'm talking about minute steaks, not preferable for carnivores.

Great service pre cruise, terrible aftercare.

Our first flight from Heathrow to Bologna to pick up our cruise was cancelled. Celebrity arranged for another flight from Gatwick early the next morning, but that was also cancelled resulting in a missed sailing. Celebrity did their utmost to get us to the next port of call, arranging flights, a hotel and a five hour transfer. Customer service on the ship was wonderful, but I have to say that after cruise customer service is abysmal. I have been waiting for a reply to my first email for TWO MONTHS. I have followed up with two further emails which have also been ignored. It’s a great shame their after cruise customer service is not as good as their cruises. Their lack of customer care does not give me an incentive to rebook with them.

Celebrities 24-hour cancellation…

Celebrities 24-hour cancellation process and customer service supporting the cancellation is horrible. I booked with Celebrity in haste because I was told only one 3 person cabin was available. The sales process was fine and the rep told me there was a 24 hour cancellation policy. I cancelled my cruise a few hours later that day and was disconnected before I received the cancellation confirmation. I called back again and they were closed for the day. I called the next morning and was disconnected again. I called back and they assured the reservation was cancelled and my deposit would be cancelled. Two days later my deposit went from Pending to Posted from my bank account. I called Customer Service and they told me it would take 10 to 15 days to credit it because the agent that helped me didn't follow the correct process. I told them that was too long to wait and asked to speak to a supervisor. Jaehl, the supervisor was super rude and told me there was nothing she could do and acted like it wasn't her issue that I was hung up on 3 times and the agent didn't follow process. If this is how the cruise line's customer service is over a deposit refund I can only imagine the issues a person would have with a serious issue. The lack of support and customer service was horrible. I would never cruise with Celebrity.

Disappointing Hotel. We have just arrived from Heathrow into…

We have just arrived from Heathrow for our two day stay in The Hotel Gambrinus Roma . Very disappointing . Poor location, Very basic, soulless hotel. Hard bed and inefficient air conditioning. I hope this is our only complaint on our Celebrity Greek Islands and Turkey cruise commencing on the 28th September. It certainly doesn’t match the five star cruise we chose. Regards Maureen

Celebrity gone downhill

Currently on board Summit. Staff fabulous, food good but far less selection than there used to be, room fine, itinerary good. The ship itself is very very tired and desperately needs a refurb. The entertainment is sparse and dreadful- best entertainment so far was captains welcome speech- he's great. All the touches/niceties that set celebrity apart are gone. This is NOT a premium cruise and frankly Princess and P&O do far better for far less money!! Room entertainment films/videos dreadful. Room amenities plated back, laundry charges ridiculously ASTRONOMICAL. Everything Celebrity used to be is no more. I can't recommend this ship at all sadly. If this us what Celebrity have become it'll be our last cruise with them.
