Unacceptable Billing Errors by Tomato Energy

I am deeply frustrated with Tomato Energy's billing accuracy. My July 2025 bill for the period of 1 June 2025 to 30 June 2025 was calculated using an estimated meter reading, despite my submission of actual meter readings on 29 June 2025 and 30 June 2025. This resulted in a discrepancy of 158 kWh. For context, my usage last month was less than 100 kWh, making the estimate over 1.5 times my typical consumption.This inaccurate estimate has led to a potentially inflated bill, which is completely unacceptable. I urge Tomato Energy to correct the bill using my submitted readings and overhaul their billing process to prevent such errors. This experience has completely eroded my trust in their service, and I highly NOT recommend Tomato Energy as a service provider. Once my contract term ends, I will switch to another provider and advise all my friends to avoid using Tomato Energy.

Closed for new customers

They have been 'temporarily not accepting new customers' for many weeks now, which is economical with the truth, the regulator has stopped them accepting transfers until they can demonstrate their finances, are in control. Luckily they don't run large customer dd surpluses so if they fail the mess will be smaller. Most of the 5* reviewers appear to exist, and obviously joined early, customer service reps definitely seem to fish for 'please leave me a good review' on the phone. Unhappy customers are those who were stranded mid transfer (and got sent back to their original supplier, often on a lousy tariff), or who can't get meter readings or bills. Not much point reading these reviews right now, even if you think TE are wonderful, you can't join.

Company reportedly owes £3m debt

It's so hard to believe the positive reviews are genuine as the negative reviews are saying exactly the same issues time and time again. Lack of clear billing, debits not taken on time, meter read problems, online energy reading problems, problems being ignored by customer services. These negative issues are consistent. Positive reviews on the other hand seem to be fairly generic. It's really important for others to be aware Tomato Energy is reportedly owing £3m debts according to recent reports, they have also been banned from accepting new customers. Standing charges across the industry are high now in part of the refunding customers for historical credit when the first lot of suppliers went bust during the start of the energy crisis. Do we really want to be contributing to propping up suppliers with massive debts which again risks putting everyone's bills up? The regulator says on this matter: "On 2 April 2025, the Authority was informed by multiple market participants that they were considering commencing legal proceedings against Tomato Energy for the recovery of unpaid liabilities totalling over £3m. The licensee has not submitted any notifications to the Authority under SLC.4B.8-9 and as such, Tomato Energy appears to have contravened SLC 4B.8."

6 Month Review

Had my 1st customer service call today. Karen asked if everything was ok and could she help with anything. I asked if I could transfer to the EV Lifestyle version without an EV and she confirmed I could and sent me details of the rates. Tomato keep getting better. Their new app works very well as does MYWatts. Billing is prompt informative and accurate. Their rates are unbeatable. Customer Service 1st class. Long may they continue.

I've been using Tomato Energy for a few months now after having switched from Octopus and honestly they're amazing. My electricity bill is so much cheaper and their customer service is brilliant. Just got off the phone with their agent Karen, who was really helpful!

Transfer from Octopus to Tomato Energy…

Transfer from Octopus to Tomato Energy was quick and easy and I am now saving even more money. My average cost per kWh is 16p. Bills and DD payments are always on time. You only pay for what you use so no large credit building up. Received a call from Harvey just to ask if all was OK. Overall a very good experience, wish they supplied gas too.

Great plan, transparent billing and great customer service

I am a current customer since November and I want to express that experience have been great since the first day. I moved from Octopus Energy and I can say that I save money moving to Tomato Energy. On top of that they been very transparent with the electricity consumption and they can provide reports for daily, even hourly consumption, no hidden fees everything. The webapp was easy to manage and I found it very easy to understand. Customer service is great, Ash was checking the customer satisfaction and provide extra informations . That is the experience from a user with just electricity smart metter point of view.

Cheap electric is key

Joined Tomato energy on the 9th February as a big user it is saving me a fortune, it hasn’t been easy after same reading on import and export meter but now sorted, double billing just waiting on refund hopefully this week. Not really happy with export moving from 3 months to 6 months where I think export should be billed every month like import as I am exporting 40kw a day. With talking and emailing customer service on a weekly basis I am finally getting somewhere and believe it is getting better but just need patience The customer service team are always polite and answer the phone This is an honest review and staying with Tomato, As a business owner myself it is always difficult in the start. Colin from the backup team rang me yesterday to see how things were going and explained all the problems I have been having so that is good to understand what they need to sort out

No data no bill

Joined Feb 25. Still not data being received on their system. Although available on other app (bright. Hugo etc). Phone them up and they say it is an internal issue and will pass to the technical team. But have heard nothing from them. Customer services suggest that I can either go on SVR or leave or wait it out. It seems there a quite a few people in the same situation and none of them as yet have been sorted. It would be great if they let us know what the problem is and if it will be ever sorted.
