Having been a customer with So Energy for a couple of years (both via fixed 12-month tariffs), I conducted my usual reviews of all available tariffs on the market with a view to either staying with SO Energy or leaving for a competitor given my current contract expires at the end of July 2025. After a fair amount of research, I found an alternative provider with more competitive costs, so decided to switch: my decision was purely financial as I’ve never had an issue with SO Energy in any way. Within hours, I realised I was making a mistake as the new utility provider (Outfox Energy) had already been problematic and I was unable to provide them with opening reads via their portal (which should be simple). I reached out to Outfox to establish what the problems were and was told there was an issue with their portal/website, they were aware, and I should submit my opening reads via email. Given I’d had problems with Outfox years ago and at the height of the energy crisis, I decided to follow my gut and told them to cancel the switch: I was going to stay with SO Energy. For me, personally, good customer service is more important than saving a few pounds over the year. Unfortunately, and to make matters worse, Outfox ignored each and every request to cancel the switch and it was only after SO Energy's collections team contacted me did I realise Outfox had continued with the switch regardless and my direct debit with SO Energy had been terminated. I called and spoke with the SO Energy collections team, explained what had happened and they were great: helped me by putting my account on stop, applying notes to the account as to why I wouldn’t be chased, and requested callback of my custom from Outfox. A couple of working days later and I’m back with SO Energy as was confirmed via email today (30.06.2025). I, personally, find SO Energy to be helpful, efficient, and their customer portal is so easy to navigate, whether I’m sending them meter reads or adjusting my direct debit. They are a little less competitive than some energy providers, but the savings are relatively minimal, especially when customer service is so good. Lessons have been learned.
Everything is clear and easy to understand, plus they are very competitive with their pricing. The most important thing for me is that they supply green energy. I have no complaints and I am happy with So. Energy`s great service.

So Energy is not a customer-oriented company. For one, they do not accept to net any payment made above the actual costs. I carried a large sum (£100+) in credit for months until I was able to reduce my direct debit amount. Secondly, and most importantly, they will send you an email about renewing your contract while you are still subject to early termination charge, without being explicit that moving away from the company will trigger the early termination charge. I suspect they are also opaque on this with comparison sites because when I use U-Switch to explore alternative contracts, it did not pick up on the early termination charge. Results: I was charged close to £100 unnecessarily. This is predatory and dishonest - I have never experienced this with any other companies. Beware!
I'd been trying to resolve some things via email but ended up picking up the phone. The person I spoke was very understanding and patient and was able to help me get the result I wanted. I'm very pleased with this call - thank you.
Dealing with So Energy is made easy by your helpful staff
At the end of the contract period I tried to renew for another two years but this proved to be impossible, however when I was able to contact the customer service department all was soon arranged. Pity the company couldn't solve the problems with the website sooner.
We have chosen to renew our energy contract with So Energy again as we know we get a superb deal with this company. We were fortunate to get a 3 year deal just previous to all the price hikes-and we would not pay more than £57.54 a month-yes-i remember the amount even now lol, and if we used less energy-that’s what we would pay, on average per month it was around £45! The 3 year deal ended and we stayed with So Energy and as expected the prices climbed-so our bills were then upped-to closer to £70 a month-which I am still mega happy with. And now we are staying with a 2 year deal and it’s dropping to £52 a month. To my husband and I, it’s a no brainer to stay with So Energy, we are lucky we live in a modern home which helps as it’s very energy efficient but we feel very lucky that all those years ago when I was getting lots of calls that I did finally pick up and listen to what was on offer. Can’t recommend these guys highly enough!!
