Problem with my wheelchair adapted van. The front restraints were not working because switch was iffy. Asit was late in afternoon suppler suggested calling RAC for assistance. I called logged fault and in a short time was allocated a petrol Matthew ID: 1277. Arrive within 4 minutes found fault and replaced switch with a spare supplied with the van, so must be a more common problem for them to supply a spare. Inside trim panel removed switch replaced all put back. Total time around 26 minutes. Also looked at tires which were showing wear from the weight suggested new ones. Went to Quick Fit next day 4 tyres replaced. So by the work carried out by Matthew I was able to get my wheelchair in the van safely and his advice on tyres probably save a problem further down the road. Many thanks Matthew and RAC for service provided.

The only experience I had directly with the RAC was through its mechanic, Malik. Certainly the communications had been good in making the call out, but with Malik it was a face-to-face experience. He explained the issues and checked all that could have gone wrong, patiently and reassuringly.

Long story short ( or not ) . Logged a breakdown at around 9 AM at a regional airport car park barrier. Initial assessment was for a patrol to be with me within 2 hours. This never happened and it was necessary to get a kindly passing motorist to move me away from the closed off car park barrier to a delivery vehicle lay-by adjacent to a nearby hotel, which had parking fine notices posted ( I await the outcome of that scenario). In the meantime, patrol arrival time slipped further on several occasions allegedly because I was not a high priority ( not a lone female and not parked on a high speed route, although I was a lone pensioner sitting in a tin box on what was the hottest day of the year so far), until after eventually receiving a telephone call from the assigned patrol man by telephone, who decided upon hearing my vehicle symptoms that he wouldn’t be able to assist anyway and would contact his control to have vehicle recovered to my home address ( as it was now after 5PM on a Friday evening and any garages who might be able to assist would be closed for the weekend). Eventually, after a further delay and after having to telephone the RAC control room myself to enquire what was happening, I was contacted by a 3rd party vehicle recovery company tasked by RAC who advised me that they could not collect for a further 2 hours. They actually arrived within 15 minutes! Vehicle loaded onto flatbed recovery lorry, and journey home commenced, only to find myself stranded once again some 50 miles later, as the transport vehicle lost 2 of its nearside rear wheels and Was itself in need of recovery. After further delays while alternative transport was arranged for the car and myself, I eventually arrived home some 13 hours after the initial breakdown. I have stalwartly been a member of the RAC for many years as the last time my wife and myself used the service some 40 years ago we were left impressed with how things progressed. We have had no need of RAC recovery services since then. However, my recent experience has left me questioning what we do moving forwards when it comes to breakdown service suppliers.

Do not use! My daughter rang when she was stuck in a live lane On a major motorway roundabout and they cut her off and told her to fill out a form online. They then said it would be 45 minutes for someone to come out, luckily a recovery truck went past and kindly towed her to a safer location as other road users were not paying attention to her hazards. Once in a safer location she updated the rac to where she was and they then changed the arrival time to 2 hours. This wasn't acceptable as she was alone in a city that she didn't know, with a 9 month old baby who she was already late to pick up, once explaining this they sent out a 3rd party to what she thought was tow the vehicle home as she clearly stated to them that it was not drive able and needed towing as the clutch had gone. They sent out a small transit van who turned on the car, put the clutch down and said yes that not drive able, I will tell the rac and they will send someone to tow you home???? The estimated arrival was then 9.20-11.20pm !!!!! She had been waiting since 6pm and the rac was not bothered, 1% battery life, a baby waiting to be collected and alone in a dark car park?? She then managed to get a family member to assist her and take her somewhere safe. 10pm had passed and no update so she rang and was then told between 1.20am-4.20am 😂😂😂. After a phone call with the manager, they then arranged for someone to come within 20 minutes and tow her home. Why could this not have been done in the first place? Under no circumstances was it acceptable to tell her to wait 10 hours for recovery! Disgusting
