Review summary
P&O Cruises is exceptionally well-rated by customers. Customers particularly appreciate service and quality, though some mention concerns about customer service and expensive.
It was just a lovely cruise. There was everything we wanted and being very much older, plenty of time to relax if needed. The staff are amazing, respectful and welcoming. The Baltic cities are wonderful sights and the talks by Dave Wright were inspirational and riveting. We went to every one. Loved every minute
What a beautiful ship, staff, food, drink, rooms the whole experience was memorable, my first cruise and a fantastic experience with great and beautiful locations visited in Norway.
Have recently returned from PO Britannia 10 anniversary cruise of the British Isles which we had been really looking forward to as it was visiting places we haven't been to before, although disappointed they cancelled our trip to Edinburgh. The cruise got off to a bad start for us it took nearly two hours from dropping our luggage off to actually get on to the ship (usually takes 20-30 mins) so was not happy it was exhausting and would have put of off if it was our first cruise. Luckily it all improved from then on and we had a fantastic and relaxing cruise. Food excellent and staff very friendly in particular Akrita and Stanley from the Meridan restaurant and Jenson our cabin steward. Britannia certainly pulled the stops out with the entertainment this cruise it was spectacular on deck and in theatre, you had to queue early to get a seat in theatre even though they did 3 shows a night it was full half an hour before show started. We did three shore excursions with PO and all where very good with knowledgeable guides on the coaches and the shuttle bus in other places was well organised. Sort the boarding out and back too 5 stars next time.
Just returned last Saturday from the Norwegian Fjords cruise on the Iona. It was our first cruise, and the experience was very positive. The embarkation was seamless and easy. The staff were very polite and helpful throughout the cruise. There were plenty of restaurants to choose from, and the food was of a high standard. The onboard entertainment was varied and had something to suit all tastes. There were plenty of swimming pools and whirlpools around the ship. The spa was lovely and well worth a visit. The Iona ship is modern and clean. We had a cabin with a seaview and a queen bed, which was very spacious. Overall, an excellent experience, and we will be cruising again.
I was made to feel very welcome and in a safe environment as a solo traveler. The food, bars and entertainment options were great. My cabin was clean and comfortable and I was allowed to have my holiday my way.
Last year I did the same cruise on Iona but took my two granddaughters. This year I was on my own and although it was the same ship with the same destinations it was a completely different experience. I was impressed with the number of staff who remembered my name after the first day which made me feel very welcome and I liked the way that we were welcomed ‘home’ each evening by the Captain which was a nice touch.
All but one shore experience was excellent and the one that wasn’t was spoiled by the inattention of the guide in Haugesund.
I tried some of the speciality restaurants with Epicurean being the best - amazing views to enjoy your meal with.
The only reason I didn’t book another cruise on board is that there is so much choice, I couldn’t decide which one to choose next. Hopefully I’ll be able to make my mind up soon.
I would highly recommend visiting the stunning Norwegian Fjords on Iona to anyone thinking of doing this cruise and advise to book as much as possible beforehand as you may find less choice once on board.
A case of Anderson’s ‘the king is in his altogether’.
There are very few commendations here except the crew were outstanding on the Aurora.
The ‘hospitality reception desk was not fit for purpose and the so-called duty manager on embarkation totally unhelpful. The food descriptions sounded great for head office but bore no relation to the real thing. The Sindhu restaurant was alarming inasmuch as they had no idea what Indian cuisine is about. They said to me that it was not really Indian but was an infusion. Poppadoms out of a packet?the rice hard and small.?
The main dining rooms looked great, the food over described and poor quality , never had poorer quality of lamb, soufflé a bricklayer might have been proud of and things described with raspberries or strawberries did not materialise. The height of the strawberry season in the Uk, never been cheaper, did not show themselves on any menu. Much of the fresh fruit was as hard as nails. Toast was soggy and tough as old boots at breakfast. Beef was poor quality, served lukewarm and tough to eat.
The cabins/staterooms had no walk in showers, there were only 4 on the whole ship. Well over 50% of the passengers were incapacitated my wife included. She had to be physically lifted in and out of the small bath with an overhead shower. She suffered severe bruising and a hematoma once from which she has recovered.
In fairness there were many passengers who like to return year after year and that makes me wonder if I am the only one seeing the issues.
The excursions were a joke. Panoramic low activity amounted to a coach dropping you off for well over an hour, walking tour of the town, back to the ship with yet another stop for a walking tour of the next town. If you couldn’t manage the walk you were advised to find a cafe and rejoin the coach when it returned. No, you could not stay on the coach. Other excursions were equally disappointing but, again, sounded good for head office
I am sure the next cruise will not be P&O for me but I wish them well. Maybe if they get things sorted out I might change my mind
We have just got back from a cruise of the fjords aboard the Iona.
Wow the ship is stunning. The Fjords are breathtaking.
We would highly recommend taking this cruise
Maintenance issues in cabin. Cracked tiles in bathroom. Chipped basin. Defective balcony door.
Only one plug socket. Hanging loose wires from wall mounted TV.
Freedom dining a joke. Waiting for an hour to get table while tables remained empty for over 1 hr. Speciality dining worst I ever had. Buffet food left out too long. Selection limited. Vegetarian option ok if you like salad and curry. No drinks. No ice cream. Serving hatches and utensils difficult to navigate and use.
Contracted Norovirus and isolated for 3 days in cabin. Infection control cleaning a joke. No wonder there were others infected on the ship.
Cancelled 2 port visits at very short notice for questionable reasons with no offer of compensation.
Cost of port shuttle buses was not made clear even at the port experience presentation.
Embarkation and disembarkation was good.
Our cabin cleaner was excellent but rushed.
Just returned from the Norwegian Fjords on the ship Iona .We had a wonderful time everything was perfect for us.The food was so delicious so much to choose from . Also the cleanliness exceeded our expectations .Well done the staff on board you were amazing.
Iona fjords cruise.
This was our second cruise with P@O, both excellent.
The scenery is spectacular. It was a bit of a letdown ending the cruise in Stavanger. The photographer excursion was a ripoff, we could have just walked a hundred yards from the ship to get the pictures. Many people were just walking away. It was only a 7 day cruise and should have been 3 fjords stops not 2.
Just had a week on Azura and it was fabulous. The ship was very clean, the staff were amazing and so friendly and helpful. The food in our main dining room (the oriental) was first class and the dining at the epicurian restaurant was out of this world.
We particularly enjoyed the evening entertainment and the headliners dancing and singing acts were superb.
We cannot thank captain Karl and all his staff enough for a most wonderful holiday and P&O for their first class experience.
Stuff that was good:
Genuinely overall most of it. Food was fabulous. Really impressed. Best food was definitely from the dine in restaurant (meridian). Lots of varieties and they were really accommodating for all dietary needs. Had a range of alternative milks which was great for us.
It was SO EASY and calm to embark and disembark. The check in for when we first arrived was very fast and calm it was wonderful. Very relaxing compared to other modes of transport. This really helped to make the holiday.
All the excursions we did were absolutely fabulous. Yes they were expensive but honestly we thought they were definitely worth it. We did 6 excursions out of the 8 days we were there. You got to see so much more and learn lots from the tour guides.
Breakfast room service (was free included continental only breakfast) with our trip. Definitely well worth using if you have a morning excursion beats the rush for the breakfast.
Deffo enter P&O competitions for free we saw people win great prizes on the cruise especially in the shopping area.
The cinema was good but very small.
They had a range of bars which were really lovey and lots of seating and live music.
WiFi was overpriced but very good.
Theatre entertainment in the evenings was really good. Lot of variety. We even had a circus show!
Most staff particularly housekeeping and hospitality were absolutely lovely.
We had a gorgeous room with a balcony which was well worth paying extra for.
Stuff that wasn’t so good;
Although the balcony was wonderful the room we had was almost directly above the theatre (which we didn’t know before booking). They’d rehearse during the day and obviously the night shows. We could hear absolutely EVERYTHING and the room almost vibrated with noise. It was very annoying when trying to relax and we couldn’t fall asleep until 11pm because of it which was frustrating. I’m autistic so the noise really affected me. The night manager was SO RUDE and abrupt. It was clear he couldn’t care less and he even said that no guest had complained before.
Worst, when we called reception again to complain, they told us to put up with it!! Which is shocking considering how much money we’d paid for the room and holiday!
The general daytime entertainment wasn’t great (quite boring actually) and we didn’t join in with much. If you want a more daytime entertainment experience and excitement definitely book a bigger ship with P&O.
The drinks package for soft drinks is absolute CRAP don’t waste your money. We could only have cartoon juice and not from bottles. Coca Cola only from the tap not in cans. They had no Fanta or sprite. Some bars didn’t even offer carton juice which was ridiculous considering how much you pay for the package.
Even though there were two pools they were very small and got quite crowded.
The windows on board the ship almost everywhere (particularly bars and restaurant windows) were absolutely filthy and ruined lots of views. Honestly they were awful with marks everywhere. We went to the fjords so it was rubbish when you couldn’t see out properly whilst eating as that’s a huge part of the appeal with cruising. We used our balcony a lot (lucky we paid for that!).
Disembarkment was earlier than expected (they were ready early) and it felt like they wanted you off the ship as soon as possible despite telling you the night before the time you needed to leave. It felt quite rushed which was a disappointing end to the holiday.
Overall we would travel with P&O again, but would definitely make some changes next time.
