Review summary

Southern New Hampshire University receives a predominantly negative response from reviewers, with many expressing frustration over financial aid issues and administrative inefficiencies. While some students highlight positive experiences with specific advisors and the flexibility of online learning, these positives are overshadowed by complaints about the university's handling of financial matters. Reviewers frequently describe a lack of support for those struggling to pay tuition, with some labeling the institution as a "diploma mill" that prioritizes profit over education. Others report significant delays and confusion in the financial aid process, leading to feelings of being misled. Despite a few individuals praising the academic support they received, the overall sentiment reflects a deep dissatisfaction with the university's operations.

Everyone has different experiences at SNHU

Do NOT attend this college

While attending this college I was told it was an inclusive college, and everybody would be accepted.. apparently, a patriotic veteran is not ! More than one occasion with more than one class, my homework that was turned in was an F on every assignment. I received A’s and B’s on every test.. The professor did not like or agree with my viewpoint therefore he just gave me f’s stay away from this college

I was hired to “teach” for this diploma…

I was hired to “teach” for this diploma mill organization. The training clearly revealed to me that the administration hires experts as instructors to facilitate or manage the course and to satisfy federal aid requirements. However, these “instructors” and “professors” are not allowed to develop their course syllabus, discussion questions, or to lecture, including no taped lectures. SNHU’s idea of student engagement is requiring instructors to respond to posts made by students on the discussion board, but students are not required to respond to instructors. Additionally, they are required to grade papers of students even though no real discussion on the topic has ever occurred. The environment is not conducive to learning subject matter or developing critical skills necessary to compete in the job market. Students are literally teaching themselves. SNHU’s online program is identical to all the others that charge exorbitant tuition fees for a mediocre experience. These for-profit programs are designed to increase their bottom line not to educate students. Buyer beware.

Not transfer friendly

They say they will take up to 12 credits transferred in. And they mean less than that. They will fight you every step of the way to accrue more money. Every step. I had to fight for 8 credits, and though I demonstrated I had already taken courses elsewhere, passed with a 4.0, I was turned down because credits at my WA university did not match the credit weight SNHU places on their course. I have to retake the same stuff now and go in debt an additional 1900 for nothing.

One of the worst schools I have…

One of the worst schools I have attended. The teaching is basically you watching YouTube videos. Financial aid is a disaster every term. And the advisors rarely reach out to you. I am transferring to WGU the end of this term.

SNHU IS A JOKE !

I was super excited to attended SNHU I had some experience with them due to a friend trying to attend he went for a few months then decided he wanted to join the military so left but he had only said good things so I tried…. And right now I wish I never did the classes are great and my counselor is super sweet. Where my problem comes in is FAFSA.. my first term my fafsa was given out three weeks late now I’m on the second term and because someone there messed up I’m now having to wait an undetermined amount of time for this term. My Pell grant was applied to last term that was already paid in full and no one knows where my sub and unsub loans are so they can not apply them. Im currently waiting on a supervisor to call me but in the meantime im just supposed to deal with it when this money doesn’t just pay for my schooling it also helps keep me afloat while I am in school. My bills don’t care that someone there messed up and they promise to fix it….. I’m definitely going to be transferring ASAP

Negative experience

I was enrolled in my first term when I experienced a very challenging life changing experience so I did not succeed in my course as well as possible but was led to believe that I would be fine. I was dropped from my second term without notice, I received an email about being on Scholastic Warning but nothing about being dropped. Was still enrolled 2 days before courses started but first day of class I was no longer enrolled. I reached out to see what was going on and obtaining a solution but admissions and counseling did not respond nor help. So now I am in debt for a student loan to a university that I will never return to.

Don't waste your time

Don't waste your time. Spent almost a year there just to get into financial aid debacle. The courses are pretty good but the mental celibates in the financial aid will put you back in kindergarten. I'm going to transfer to Phoenix online.

They do not care about their Students, DO NOT APPLY IF YOU ARE AN ADULT AND WORK

If you have a full time job, a life outside of said job and school, and are prone to everyday life things going wrong for you. Then, ABSOLUTELY, do not apply for or attend this college. Your advisor will lie to you about policies and procedures when things in life decide to get in the way, then you'll be told something completely different 6 months later and the school will not take any ownership of this. All they want is your money. The course content is very minimal at best, you'll be paying thousands to watch YouTube videos that aren't even created by or in relation with the school. AKA you could have just watched them yourself for free. I often would do things above what was expected/being discussed in my courses and be told that I need to follow exactly what the assignment says. They have their courses laid out, and are very binary in what is an acceptable submission for an assignment.

I was a transfer student to SNHU

I was a transfer student to SNHU. I had completed my associate degree in business management from a community college with 71 credits. All of my existing credits were accepted at SNHU. I also completed and transferred another 26 credits through Sophia in one month for $79 during my time at SNHU. You have a residency requirement of 30 credits through SNHU, so they can make their money. I completed those 30 credits in 10 months and received my bachelors degree specializing in business administration with a 4.0 GPA. Most all of the professors are adjunct and are decent. A word of advice, if you are one of those kinds of people that starts trouble and that has to “win“ and start escalating things, you won’t win. You may also blacklist yourself. My advice to you is to be kind and, move onto the next topic. If you try and cheat they will catch you. They use turnitin and other sophisticated tools to catch you. Plus, other students can fill out a form and tell on you. Each term flies by in eight weeks. Also, if you anticipate any family members croaking, your dog getting sick, having any sort of personal meltdown or any other else that’s going to prevent you from doing your schoolwork, don’t go here. They don’t care, nor take any excuses, you are either here to study your tail off and get the work done on-time or fail. I got in a major car accident and got Covid and still got my work done on time. So, suck it up buttercup. The professors are not going to hold your hand or pat you on the head and tell you that you’re a good little boy or girl, either. You have hard deadlines every single Thursday and Sunday to get a lot of work done. You have to get discussion boards completed with multiple replies, papers to write, and possibly quizzes to boot. All while working on a final project that will be due on week seven or eight for every class, and at the end of every single term. Another thing, there are NO Lectures. Remember Daniel LaRusso in the movie the karate kid? That is going to be you “learning karate from book”. If you can’t learn like that, then don’t go here. Yes, they have online tutors available, but you need to be a self starter, resourceful, and a person who is able to comprehend what they’re reading. At best, you will get a professor to respond to your email within 24 hours. I’ve had some professors that never replied to me at all. But, I was resourceful and got my answer somewhere else. If you can’t deal with that, then don’t go here. As for your academic advisors, they are good for signing you up for your next courses based on your degree plan. I would highly recommend that you write a very detailed list down of questions you might have for them when you are able to get them on the phone. The reason is that they do not have an Email address or phone number to reach them. They have this general email address called advisors @ SNHU, and this general phone number 1-800 Advisors. Supposedly, when you email or call that number, your phone number or email address is supposed to be recognized and it’s supposed to magically route it to your specific advisor. 99% of the time that does not ever happen. The good thing is they have advisors working 24/7 that can do anything that your personal advisor can do. So just choose that option when you call. Being an online student, I feel is tougher than in person. There is zero personal interaction and you can’t ask questions on the spot. I work 60 hours a week and I found it convenient that I can do my classes between midnight and 4 AM. That’s really the only advantage over in-person classes. So, be very sure that you are insanely motivated and can get work done without excuses if you’re going to go here. It is what you make it. If I can deal with the nuances, work 60 hours a week, pull off a 4.0 GPA, and complete my bachelors degree in 10 months, so can you. My studies totaled about 35 to 40 hours per week to maintain a 4.0 GPA. If you’re OK with B’s and C’s, I’m sure you can get the work done in 15 to 20 hours a week. It comes down to how bad you want it and how hard you are willing to work for it. PS. Everyone you interact with will tell you that they never had a textbook at SNHU cost them over $85. Everyone loves to tell you that! Well guess what? Every single darn textbook that you need to buy will cost you $85. So, you better budget that additional book cost every single 60 days into your budget. I also recommend that you take the intro to critical thinking course as an elective. It includes a digital certification badge that you can put on your résumé and on LinkedIn. It is also verifiable by employers.

SNHU admissions turned a fraud in my case

I wanted to pursue bachelors in Psychology. Since I lost all my educational certificates. I told them upfront I will not be able to supply my Grade 12 certificate copy. They listened asked me to pay 13,954 rupees as registration fees, rushed me into it saying that was the last day to get discount. I paid the fees online. After that they denied my admission without answering about my refund. They are behaving without any character. I would not recommend any one falling into trap of discount without getting all details about admission. I have been calling them since last two days for my money no one is picking up the calls.

I am very unsatisfied

am very unsatisfied with their dispute resolution specialist Helen robbins . I have been sick since March 1 due to Covid in and out of the hospital fighting my way through this class every single step submitting my assignments later than I usually do and subpar work at that! They offered an emergency withdrawal with documentation which I gave them from the hospital but what they don’t understand, is me working as a medical assistant I was able to be diagnosed with a precocious anemia at my job by showing my provider my bloodwork. The Hospital couldn’t even diagnosed me with that because they didn’t know what they were doing so unfortunately, the school would rather me fail the class then help me withdraw from the class without having to pay for tuition as a single mom working a full-time job. Absolutely do not care about their students whatsoever. I’ve been going there for three years and now I’m gonna have to start over somewhere else where I feel I can be helped better and with people that have more compassion form extenuating, circumstances like mine. Do not make the mistake and believing that these people care about you we are just a number. Update: Helen Robbins is now trying to get my in trouble because of my frustration with her lack of empathy, professionalism and integrity during the is process. Absolutely ridiculous and now I’m fighting with them due to an unreasonable woman who refused to do anything to help me which she interrupted me on they phone.

Waste of Time!

What a waste of time! I got admitted to a graduate program but the financial aid officers are morons. I was approved by the Dept of Education for a graduate loan but the school decided they weren't going to let me have it and used their authority to deny me. Never knew they could do this but why would they???? They probably did me a favor because the degree is probably questionable and not worth it.

If you're thinking about going here...

If you're thinking about going here as an online student... 1. Admissions folks are very helpful in telling you what you need to do & what will transfer. If something you expected to transfer doesn't, then you can have them review the syllabus of your class. 2. Registration is done through your advisor. You generally can't enroll yourself in class. That means you don't get to compare instructors ahead of time. 3. Classes are 8 weeks long each term. 4. All classes have a writing component, even Math. 5. If you need a lot of detailed instructions, you are probably better going somewhere else. This program is set up like independent study + some interaction through a discussion board. 6. The instructors are hit or miss. Some seemed to have been let go by other academic institutions--the "Rate My Professor" has been terrible for my instructors. They don't get better at SNHU, but the administration doesn't seem to care. People who say it's "student centered" which is true of everything on campus except the classroom. 7. You can join extracurricular activities & clubs even as an online only student.

a waste of time..lack of communication…

a waste of time..lack of communication and diversity. They care about our money. The staff are rude and doesn't understand basic 101 financial aid. But will lie to make themselves look good. Poor leadership.. The leadership lies and hold up for employees that are in the wrong. They need to be reported to the department of Education for a lack of diversity, lack of communication, and a lack of knowledge. I wouldn't recommend them to a dog. The employees are rude and will hang up on the student. They have no leadership. The leaders and directors are their for our money not mine. I have never experienced such poor leadership and everyone has a lie or an excuse until the potential student speaks out. The financial aid department has no knowledge at all..they will lie and when they get caught in a lie they make u out to be the bad person. They have no diversity..stay far away and don't contact admissions they only hire unexperiernced professionals with little to no experience.. dont waste your time and money...this is my information towards freedom of speech.

Very Bad Don't There.

I should have waited. This company or school is actually very bad than ever. They have a system that target some people and make them lose. And right now, I would like to warn people who are considering going to this school to think twice maybe it can save them money and headache like I am going through.

A school that truly cares

I truly love being a student at SNHU. I have an awesome student advisor who lets me know how proud he is of me when I have had to struggle to get caught up with my class after my brother got sick then past away. He even sent me a throw blanket from him and SNHU as a gesture of sympathy for my brothers passing. This school has everything a student needs to be successful and I currently have a 3.0 GPA which can go up if I work hard. This school cares and wants to see you earn your degree and so if you are thinking about furthering your education go check out SNHU and see what you think.

best investment in education

I went back to school after 20+ years away. A lot has changed and I was worried if I could handle it. My academic advisor has been amazing every step of the way. The lady in financial aid has been a star, helping me make sense of my loans. The career center has helped me to pinpoint which career I am best suited for, and going back to my advisor, I have been able to really set myself up well in my career change. The classes have been pretty straightforward. You know what you need to do and when it is due. The tutor service has helped quite a bit at times....other times, not as much. I have loved most of my professors. They are professional and helpful and some are truly wonderful. I had so many concerns about going back to school. Some of these classes have been very challenging, but I have learned so much from all of them. I have managed to keep a 4.0 GPA and graduate with both my Associates and my Bachelors with honors. I am pursuing my masters next, which is something I would never have dreamed of. They have been great and supportive every step of the way. I wish I would have done this sooner.
