Exactly what we were after - seamless experience.

Eveeything was perfect Organized, And we can take the car on the Ferry from south- to Nord-Island.
Always amazing service, love mode car rentals!
Great customer service and excellent cars. Highly recommended.
Mode's rental rates are very reasonable compared to others, so I've used them a few times now. The cars may not be brand new, but they are clean and perfectly serviceable. Recommended.
It is always great to rent a car from Mode Rentals in Wellington. Decent rates, decent cars, good service. When you are looking for a rental car and don't want to pay a lot, then they are your crowd.
Easy to deal with them, good cars, excellent value for money (we got a Corolla SW hybrid for NZ$41/day for a couple of days!) and conveniently located, just 5 min walk from THL (Maui/Apollo/Mighty etc.) depot
The booking process and final arrangements for pick-up at the airport was seamless. The car was perfect for our needs. Reliable and economical. The return and drop off was efficient and courteous. Happy to recommend Mode.
Was able to rent a car as a P2 aussie license holder and it did the job just fine. Picked up from christchurch & dropped it off at queenstown and found the staff to be nice and helpful. The car was clean both inside and out. I was unlucky enough to have a loose stone from another car crack the windscreen but it was solved hassle free & exactly as the rental agreement states.
I always shop for the least expensive rental when I visit New Zealand in the (northern) winter months. This year (2025) Mode won. They weren’t a whole lot less expensive than the other competitors, but a bit. The car I got was pretty much what I expected, had about 150,000 km on the odometer, but was basically fine – a bottom-of-the-line Toyota. The customer service at the Mode kiosks isn’t great, but it isn’t terrible either. A few days after I had the car (I had it for about 5 weeks), I noticed something dripping from the engine overnight. I think it was coolant. Probably not a big deal, but slightly worrisome. The Mode person I emailed about it didn’t seem terribly concerned, and in the end it didn’t turn out to be a serious problem. Still, it would have been helpful if the customer agent had been a bit more on the ball about it. At one point in my rental I drove along a toll road. The Mode agent had warned me about toll roads, but I took that to mean that if I did that, I should pay the toll myself, which can be done online. So I did. I found the NZ website and figured out how to pay the toll ($2.50). So I more than a little irritated when I got an email from Mode that I had been charged $27.50 by them... $2.50 for the toll, and another $25 for the "admin fee." So I paid the toll twice, plus the ridiculous admin fee. Be aware of this if you decide to rent from Mode. When I complained to Mode, they "helpfully" told me how I could possibly go about getting the $2.50 back from the NZ roading authority! I dropped the car off at a separate place from where I got it, which Mode charged me an extra $400. The Wellington terminal where I dropped the car off was pretty grungy – basically a metal container turned into an office. So, all-in-all, Mode was maybe a bit less impressive than I would have expected, even given I was going for the least expensive option.
Got a stone chipped windscreen while driving a Mode Rental. Did the right thing and told them about it on return and it so happened their car repairer was on site and fixed it on the spot. Charge was $75 for the repair which is perfectly reasonable but they wanted a $45 admin fee and refused to lower it even though the only admin was telling the guys already there to fix it and processing a payment to it when he submits his invoice. I paid but will never use them again.
I knew it was a slightly older car (used to be a lease car it seems) it was a good deal financially and I've had no real problems during the 5 weeks rental period. The car was large enough for my triathlon bike box in the trunk with folded down rear seats and a large bag (and during the 5 weeks buying more and more souvenirs and other items). The car wasn't really powerful and with a few longer and steep hills it took some more effort. Not that it worried me and I wasn't in a rush at all. Would certainly consider renting a car from Mode Rentals in the future! Feedback for Mode Rentals: At pickup in Auckland, after the paperwork and financial formalities, the employee just gave me the keys and pointed me in the direction of the car (row of 5-6 cars) without coming out of the office. It would have been a nice gesture to walk the 20 meters to the car and explain a bit maybe. There weren't any customers waiting so I guess he would have a few minutes to help me. He could also have explained where the heck the lever of the fuel lid was hidden. This would have saved me some embarrassment at the petrol station a few days later! Luckily another Toyota rental driver could show me where the lever was (next to the driver on the floor). The return in Christchurch was smooth and without any issues. There wasn't any damage and my bond was released.
the first day when we arrived in wellington, after one hour we arrived at regional park, the car collapsed with all red lights flashing. the car doors unlocked themselves. although i told them the brake was loose, it may have something to do with starting, they did not listen and tried every way to blame us. and the major blame was we left car door open for more than 10 minutes. they asked us to call a roadservice displayed on their windscreen which obviously was a conflict of interest to us. when the roadservice arrived, as expected, they believed it was due to my inexperience that caused the problem, when it was a rental car and we were just one off user. after we came back to auckland, without my authorisation, they took $195 from my credit card. i have to go through court system to recover my lost money. this is a company you really have to be careful. they are dodgy and know how to beat you hard when you were too innocent to think of "evil" word. we are going through court system and collecting more evidence against this brazen company when they told the lies all the time. if you want to have a peaceful enjoyment of life, stay away from this crap.
We rented a small Toyota for 17 days in November/December ‘24 in Auckland for a journey in Northland. Great experience. Car was good. The rental procedure we did online before, so in Auckland all went fast and easy. No additional costs. The deposit of 3000 Dollar was made in reservation on my card. The price for the car was not high. At return again a quick scan, fast procedure, no extra costs and immediat return of deposit. Great experience, good service. Wil D. NL.
I would not recommend this company to anyone. Staff were very rude, discussing a problem in front of customers, just pointing to the car and saying "There's your car" and not carrying my luggage from the office to the car. No manners what so ever. No instructions of how to get onto the main road or where the nearest fuel station was. Then I had to stop and clean the inside of the windscreen and the tomato sauce off the steering wheel. When I returned the car, it was "Get into the van", then off to the airport with no " We hope you enjoyed your stay and thank you for choosing Mode Rentals ", just got thrown out of the van without even a goodbye. Will never rent off them again
We had a distressful experience renting a car from Mode’s Wellington branch, from 29th July to 1st August 2024. During our rental period, we encountered several significant issues that made driving the vehicle (KLM841) extremely distressful and unsafe, particularly given the incessant rain in Wellington during the period. The major concern was the car wipers, which produced a loud, sharp, and jarring noise whenever they were in use. This noise was not only disturbing but also unsafe and traumatic for drivers, especially when driving and navigating in the rain. The below video footage demonstrates the severity of the issue, and we believe this car is not fit for use on the roads. Additionally, the car assigned to us had a visible crack on the windscreen near the driver’s side. This crack is a significant safety concern as it could potentially worsen, impairing the driver’s vision and posing a serious risk to our safety. As frequent renters of cars for domestic travel within New Zealand, we are appalled by the substandard quality and safety of the vehicle Mode provided to us. This is unequivocally the worst car rental experience we have encountered. It is unacceptable to have paid for a vehicle that is evidently unfit for road use and poses a serious safety hazard. Given our experience, we strongly advise against renting a car from Mode Rentals. Consumers must be warned to meticulously inspect their vehicle, including the windscreen, car body, and wipers, prior to driving away. Failure to do so may result in being held liable for any pre-existing damage, exacerbated by Mode Rentals' imposition of a $3,000 security bond, which we find utterly unreasonable considering the poor condition of the car they provided us which was not fit for use. The vehicle we received had a dirty floor mat, numerous dings and scratches, a conspicuous chip in the windscreen on the driver’s side and car wipers that produced such a jarring noise that they were unsuitable for use.
Usual excellent car and service.
We were picked up from Queenstown and brought to the rental car office. It is a short drive an if you call them they will be there within 10-15 minutes. All people were very kind and explained everything really well. They also explain there policies and are very clear about what you should do with broken window or flat tire or anything else. You also get a phone number to ring if there are issues with the vehicle, but we did not need it. We dropped our car about 3 weeks later off near Auckland airport. We were a lot earlier than we had arranged, but this was no problem. The lady was really kind and the bond was immediately released at the desk, took only 1 minute for the bank to release it to me, so that was fast. They offered us a ride to the airport, but we stayed in Auckland, so we did not need it. All in all, great experience with kind people. Everything was explained very well. Would definitely recommend mode car rentals.
They gave us an old model car, one which we didn’t order as we need the large suv instead gave us on older model and small sized car than we needed. Then said they couldn’t get us another car as the one they had was to small. Then when returning the car didn’t have transport back to international check in terminal resulting in nearly missing the baggage check it. They are not located at the airport they are 10minutes drive away. We strongly not recommend this car hire company in Auckland everything was a very bad experience for us. Look else where to find a company that won’t rip you off with old cars and actually resolve issues. Also in fine print there is a $3000 bond held which they don’t tell you on there web site. Unlike other companies which is $200.
Efficient pick up at airport. Newish car and very clean. Easy drop off.
