Review summary
Intrepid Travel receives consistently positive reviews. Customers particularly appreciate service and professional, though some mention concerns about customer service and communication.
Our tour was amazing. Houssin our guide was inspiring, passionate about his country and friendly, sensitive to the different personalities in the group. He was approachable and helped with all inquiries, no matter how small. Houssin also facilitated our dinners and different requirements. He developed a real rapport with our group. Local guides were articulate and informative.
We had a great tour with 'Seen' our Tour Leader who made everyone feel so welcome. 'Seen' continued this throughout our Trip giving us so much information on all destinations and looking after our welfare. Additionally all the Support Team worked hard to keep us safe, well feed and hydrated always with a smile.
So many wonderful memories, good laughs with other Team bike members and new friendships forged.
Thank you Intrepid, Dave
Having never been to Turkey previously and as a first time user of Intrepid, we had an amazing tour. We did the Turkey Encompassed tour which was led by Mali who was so knowledgable, a great tour leader and gave us a fantastic insight into the country. Being in a small group was great and so many highlights, would recommend this tour and Intrepid.
This was my first tour with Intrepid and I was very impressed. I particularly enjoyed having a bit more independent time compared with other tour companies and the group size of 12 was perfect. Claire, our guide, was amazing, and went out of her way to facilitate the experience.
Our tour was first rate in every facet. The itinerary was well thought out, the experiences were genuine and fascinating, our guide was charming and organized and, given this was a Food Tour and we were in Korea, the food and its preparation, was top quality everywhere we went. We couldn't recommend this tour highly enough!
I had an absolute blast touring Tasmania with Intrepid. The island’s natural beauty was incredible, but our guide truly made the trip unforgettable, the guides humour, stories, and local insights brought it all to life. A perfect mix of adventure, scenery, and culture. I have done many tours with Intrepid and would highly recommend them and this tour!
We've had a truly awful experience with Intrepid. They seem to have gone massively downhill from a few years ago. We booked on a tour to Madagscar then found it went to an area that the UK Foreign Officer recommended against due to tourist kidnappings - which they said they weren't aware of. We changed it to a different trip to Indonesia and arranged all but one of the flights to get there, but the final connecting flight we were told we'd have to do ourselves and it'd be "easy". It hasnt been easy at all and we cant actually get to the start of the tour. So then we just try to use the flights we do have to make our own tour, but they said that we now forfeit the flights if we're not on one of their tours.... Their customer service has been taking days to respond to emails and the phone is hard to get through on. This has been dragging out for months ... I could go on. Would recommend that you try alternative companies.
My wife & I are Australians and have been to Asia many times but not to Japan. We had heard good things, so we jumped on to an Intrepid trip in April, 2025.
Our Guide was Shizuka Yoshimura who, while being born in Japan, was a well-travelled, knowledgeable and enthusiastic woman who was fun to be with and proved very capable in leading 9 of us, aged between about 30 years of age to mid-70's, from 4 nations around her own country. Shizuka was very fluent in English which was brilliant.
Experience counts, both in the present, coping with transport & other issues which always arise, and in the planning and communicating the next stage of the tour with the group.
Shizuka adapted to both the more able-bodied and the less physically able with care and good grace, always making sure that all members of the party were happy and comfortable with decisions regarding , e.g. whether or not to climb a few hundred steps to see a castle, shrine, etc. Everyone was always looked after and meeting points along the way were well spelled out, so no one felt abandoned in any way.
Our accommodation was as advertised, so in the case of staying at Hacone in a traditional style (with really low beds and no seating above floor level), Shizuka arranged for standard kitchen chairs to be placed in our room which was great - it's always the little things that matter.
Our trip was based on traveling most of the way by Shinkansen (bullet trains) and sometimes the ticketing was not straight-forward, but it was well explained all of the time and Shizuka's planning smoothed out the bumps every time.
Shizuka's "local knowledge", being Japanese, assisted our group many times along the way when things may not have been going according to plan and we always felt looked after and confident that "The Boss" would quickly resolve any hiccups.
Equally, Shizuka often gave us our own space and when a group dinner was not a part of the agenda we sometimes shared meals with her apart from the group or vice-versa - there was a good, relaxed feeling in the group that we were our own mature travellers as well as being a part of the group.
Look, I know that things can go wrong whether you are hiking out in the bush or traveling at 300 kp/h, but in our experience our Guide Shizuka was very well equipped personally to adapt and overcome, and we had a beaut trip.
Highly recommended.
Be wary of Intrepid Travel and read their T's & C's
A travel company's true quality is revealed when things go wrong—and how they respond in those moments. Unfortunately, this is where Intrepid Travel falls short, very short. Their terms and conditions make it clear that they go to great lengths to avoid accountability, even for life-threatening decisions made by their group leaders and any costs resulting from those decisions.
I experienced this firsthand while trekking in the Himalayas. Falling ill, I was advised to join two other ill trekkers in a trek to the next town at a lower altitude—a journey that was supposed to take 2 to 2.5 hours. In reality, it took five gruelling hours, four of which were spent trekking in a blizzard at subzero temperatures, guided only by head torches in complete darkness. The consequences were serious, landing me in the hospital.
When the group leader finally caught up with us, he couldn’t even meet my eyes. It took over ten minutes before he even asked how we were. Instead of taking responsibility, he resorted to excuses, failing to acknowledge the gravity of his poor decision-making. If I had stayed where I was, I would have been OK, and could have made the trek down in the morning with the remaining group.
I’ve travelled extensively, yet I’ve never encountered treatment like this. Before choosing a tour company, do your research thoroughly. There are far better options than Intrepid Travel.
EDIT:
As per Intrepid Travels request, I have contacted them with my trip code HNXE250411. I will update this post with their response when I receive something back.
EDIT:
I heard back from Intrepid Travel. As expected, their response was an attempt to twist their actions. Unfortunately, they got their facts wrong, leading me to believe there was no investigation, but a fabricated summary.
Maybe this is the reason they only get a score of 2.1 on productreview.com.au
Very well organised trip to Borneo.
The guide Aldrin was exceptional, knowledgeable, caring and responsive to any situation, he is a good ambassador for the company.
Only downside the Bilit riverside lodges need urgent attention as health and safety issues need to be addressed. The boardwalk to lodges is unlit and failed lightening outside lodges meant using only your mobile phone is unacceptable.
The planks to negotiate when using the boats is an accident waiting to happen.
Had a great experience with Intrepid visiting Eastern Europe. Very well organized from start to finish with a fantastic group leader Peter. I can highly recommend it for those travellers who want to do their own thing but at the same time want to be part of a group.
