Review summary
Square receives consistently positive reviews. Customers particularly appreciate service and reliable, though some mention concerns about customer service and communication.
Square is not a company I would trust with handling business finances. They play with people’s money by freezing accounts, holding funds without warning, and offering little to no explanation when you try to get help. The customer service is vague and often just sends scripted responses.
If you’re a small business that relies on regular cash flow, be very careful — Square can freeze your money for weeks under the label of “risk review” with no real recourse. You do everything right, and they still shut you down or delay your funds.
This is unacceptable behavior for a financial services company. Businesses deserve transparency, reliability, and real support — not silence and stress.
Setting up and using Square is incredibly simple! It has saved me so much time in keeping my inventory accurate so my customers always know what I have in stock.
By me being a new business owner I can say the Square team has help me out tremendously!!👍👍 especially dealing with refund issues from time to time so far they have made my customer’s happy and I looking forward to have a good reputation with my small business and also with my square account . I am glad and bless that I am dealing with the Square team 👍👍 and looking forward to grow my business even more.
I Love square. It has helped so much by making it easy to take credit cards without having to go buy a bunch of expensive equipment like I thought I would have to. This app has been such a big help in my business.
Beware of chargebacks. Even if you do everything right, Square will not have your back. Completed a service for a client. Received TAP payment in the customer's driveway for that service. Client filed a chargeback saying that they never received the service. Square allowed the client's bank to recoup the money. It was $99, so there's no point in filing suit against the client. White collar theft is allowed, and you have NO protection. Good luck!
Update: PayPal offers seller protection. Maybe this is something that Square should look into.
I'm extremely disappointed with Square. Today, I received a completely false statement from one of their representatives when I asked why my funds were being held longer than usual — something that has been happening more and more frequently lately.
I clearly have official reports showing two transactions processed yesterday — one at 5:36 AM and another at 9:06 AM. However, the representative claimed:
"YOUR money is not being held by us, as YOU made the transfer after 5 pm local time... YOUR bank does THAT... it's posted for up to 2 business days."
This is not only inaccurate but also insulting to anyone who keeps track of their finances. I made the transfers well before 5 PM, so their excuse doesn’t add up. It's frustrating and unacceptable to be given misleading responses when asking valid questions about my own money.
I expected better from a company handling financial transactions. If Square can't provide transparency and accountability, how are customers supposed to trust them.
Update:
I STILL never received an email notifying me, let alone explaining why, my account was closed.
If i was doing something against policy or incorrect I would love to have known about it so I could correct it. But the lack of communication by square support is absolutely ridiculous. Just canceled my account with zero notification or explanation of why or the opportunity to correct. Also couple of different emails that said I would be hearing from somebody within square one to two business days and it's been almost 2 weeks!
I went to Square Community to ask for help, and Square has blocked me from there, too! They won't let me post on the boards to ask for help.
Totally non-existent customer service...
Canceled my account without any warning or reason. Said they sent an email, but did not, except saying my checking account is closed, but no reason why. (But they kept my money that's in the savings account that they collect high interest on while giving us 1% btw)
Called customer service who said they couldn't disclose anything, transfer me to anyone to talk to, and I would have to wait for an email describing thier decision after being on the phone for a hour! Like i had received an email in the first place.... lots of them, for marketing trying to sell me more product! But no email explanation as they say they sent.
