Review summary
Amber Electric receives consistently positive reviews. Customers particularly appreciate service and quality, though some mention concerns about customer service and expensive.
Amber electric have upped my usage charge by 3 times my original costing. Doubling my previous bill. I work full time hardly home with 2 people in the house. When asked why it is so high. They said I used more that month. Not double the amount. I will not use them again it recommend them.
The best electricity retailer I have had for 20 years
This is a great company if you use lots of electricity.
They give you warnings when the price is expensive so you can cut back your usage. The rest of the day your power is less then half the price of other power companies. As they price power on how much the are charged, not what they can get away with like other companies. They also send you details in the beginning of each season on their maximum charge related to peak pricing. They also have an app that shows how much power you are using at anytime and how much solar is going back into the grid.
When you have any questions they get back to you quickly.
Amber is the best electricity supplier I have had in the last 20 years.
Outstanding product. We get our electricity at cheaper price and best of all get great export prices. Customer service has been amazing, explaining each questions answer clearly with the assistance to talk us through what we needed to do. Well done guys
A breath of fresh air, with a company that is allowing solar and battery installers to be rewarded for their investment. Other companies, have reduced solar input to 3 cents per kw, an insult. Looking forward to a mutually rewarding experience, where we are rewarded for our investment.
Initially signed onto Amber in January and it was great, summer was cheap and power was wonderfully green and abundant. However this was very short lived and for the past 2 months I have been faced with continual price spikes (although not classified as a spike to them I feel like anything around 40c/kwh is a spike!). My partner and I have found we are continually sitting at home after work in the dark and cold, trying to avoid these sparks. Have just come to my senses and thought why the heck are we wasting our life in the cold like this! Am moving on from amber and going to find a normal main stream retailer that charges ~20c/kwh consistently so we can enjoy our evenings again.
Amber has a great marketing hype that you will save $$$ because they consider themselves as a wholesaler.
However, in the first 6 months everything was running great in terms of saving electricity bills. But after that I've been receiving 'Price Spike' every day. It starts off with a couple of price spike a week, then they gradually increase it once you're with them for over 6-8 months.
They will tell you about the time of the spike and will let you know to avoid using too much electricity during the spike hike, but I noticed that the price spike happens during peak hours... so how do you avoid that when you need electricity ...
I have 40 solar panels (12kw system) and was saving energy from another provider more than a year ago. I used to pay between $20-$60 a month, but ever since I moved to Amber Electric, it's just a catastrophe. Only in one day my usage cost spiked to $43 and some other days are usually between $3 - $20.
According to their site, price spikes are rare events that occur for 30min- 2hours (refer to their site under price spike).
In fact, it happens every day and you will get price spikes twice or three times a day. You might find you will save $$$ in the first 3-6 months after you sign up, but after that they will hit you multiple price spike and that's how they will recuperate their money back from you.
This is a complete 1 year experience with Amber electricity, so I would consider going somewhere else.
So we moved houses and decided to move to Amber from Origin to see if we could save some money on power. We were paying 28c per kwh so paying wholesale sounded like music to my ears. First month I had one price spike which fits inline with their 0.1% price spikes, bill was ~$400. We normally paid between 400-600 a month in power previously, so this met our expectations. We are a family of 5: 2 parents I wfh, wife is at Uni + working pt as well as 3 teenage kids. Its fair to say we use alot of electricity, everyone has their own PC/laptop, lights are left on, washing machine is constantly going - you get the picture. I have the amber iphone app send me notifications when the price spikes above 33c. And boy the last 2 weeks its been blowing up my phone. $100 for 3 days? Seriously! Going from $14-16 a day on average to $29-$42 a day? I'm not just talking about price spikes between $10-20 per kwh but also ~35-49c per kwh during most of the day? WTH?
Be warned, any big electricity users or big families look elsewhere. The wholesale spin is not worth it. Best to find a capped rate as the potential savings are wiped out with only a couple of horrendous days of spikes.
I know you're gonna say conserve power during these spikes/rises but do you want to have a cold breakfast on a winters morning? Can't I have a hot meal for dinner from the oven or slow cooker? Can't I turn on my reverse cycle AC when its cold at night? How do I get my clothes dry in a wet spell without my dryer? We do our best to turn appliances off but how do you accommodate multiple price spikes (above 33c) throughout the entire day? I mean the cheapest rates over the last few days have been between midnight and 5am. Whose awake then?
I know people will probably respond saying I'm exaggerating. You're just lucky I can't upload the screenshots from my phone. Anyway we are moving onto another provider with the transfer completing in 2 weeks now as I'm tired of the price gouging.
It's a great idea – and maybe it will work out lower cost in the long term BUT in Sydney currently you get the 'price is spiking' around dinner time almost EVERY night. So while, you can defer dish and clothes washing, stove/heating/lighting to make dinner feels scary when the App tells you it could be up to $17kWh!
So there are a few issues with this provider. Firstly they don’t like sending bills. Apparently they have issues with their billing system and the saga continues. Next, the billing when you do get it is damn impossible to make sense of. And finally well the claim that spikes only occur 1% of the time is simply false!
You are best steering clear of this awful provider in my view!
