Review summary
Amber Electric receives consistently positive reviews. Customers particularly appreciate service and quality, though some mention concerns about customer service and expensive.
Amber electric have upped my usage charge by 3 times my original costing. Doubling my previous bill. I work full time hardly home with 2 people in the house. When asked why it is so high. They said I used more that month. Not double the amount. I will not use them again it recommend them.
The best electricity retailer I have had for 20 years
This is a great company if you use lots of electricity.
They give you warnings when the price is expensive so you can cut back your usage. The rest of the day your power is less then half the price of other power companies. As they price power on how much the are charged, not what they can get away with like other companies. They also send you details in the beginning of each season on their maximum charge related to peak pricing. They also have an app that shows how much power you are using at anytime and how much solar is going back into the grid.
When you have any questions they get back to you quickly.
Amber is the best electricity supplier I have had in the last 20 years.
Outstanding product. We get our electricity at cheaper price and best of all get great export prices. Customer service has been amazing, explaining each questions answer clearly with the assistance to talk us through what we needed to do. Well done guys
A breath of fresh air, with a company that is allowing solar and battery installers to be rewarded for their investment. Other companies, have reduced solar input to 3 cents per kw, an insult. Looking forward to a mutually rewarding experience, where we are rewarded for our investment.
I've been with Amber for two years now. Initially I was terrified as previously I had been on fixed rates with a large national provider. However, the idea of having variable rates had me a bit nervous. After a couple of months I soon realised that Smartshift was doing its job. Some months my bill was $90.00. If that sounds like a lot then others were large credits to me. I have added all my last 24 bills up and decided them to give me a daily rate. Running my house is costing me about $1.35 per day across the year. That's pretty good.
One Day Cost Me Over $100 – Amber Is a Trap, Not a Saver
Signed up to Amber after being sold the idea that you can “save money by accessing wholesale electricity prices.” What a joke. Instead of savings, got slapped with surge pricing so extreme, that the bill for a single day was over $100 – and no, I don’t live in a factory.
Amber markets itself as some kind of disruptor doing customers a favour. In reality, it just exposes you to the wild volatility of the energy market, with zero protection when wholesale prices spike, which happens often. While they’re busy patting themselves on the back for “transparency,” you’re stuck stressing every time you turn on a heater, wondering if it’s costing you $5 an hour.
Their pitch is that over time it evens out and you save, that simply hasn’t been true. Bills are higher, usage hasn’t changed, and the so-called “smart” tools in the app just tell you to not use power during peak times (you know, like when it’s cold or you’re home from work).
Bottom line: If you enjoy anxiety with your appliances and want a power bill that feels like playing Russian roulette, go with Amber. If you just want reliable, predictable pricing – stay with certainty and no surge.
Avoid Amber.
I've been with amber for almost three months and am totally satisfied with my earnings from the market. I choose to manually control my battery and when I will sell and send power to the grid. You may choose the automatic system that takes care of the selling of your stored energy, but that is not for me. My feeling is that automation is most suited for installation that are larger then mine (16kWh battery system), but that is just a gut feeling. Overall I am hundreds of dollars ahead from the feed in tariffs I've earned compared to the miserable 5 cents a kWh Origin was paying me and in fact I've earned more in 3 months that Origin would pay me in 9. Being on Amber requires a bit of work with an eye on the market prices that show in their App and if working manually, like I am, you need to pay attention to the wholesale market as it can be very lucrative during spikes.
Amber Electric has been a super positive expierence. Once batteries were on boarded the application does the rest! I have generated more credit than I have with any other provider and would recommend people to give it a shot yourselves!
This digital experience company is like others, if you need them expect 7 days wait for any response, phone calls ring out and get flushed to a hang up and email message and the sales team have a call logger to flush anyone trying to divert via the sales team to get more help. If everything works great but when something doesn't expect silence from Amber. They are impossible to contact via email with any resinable contact time and any company which pretends to offer phone support should be more upfront that they just dont offer it. Even their response to feedback takes multiple days. As a new member I would expect some extra hand-holding but sadly once they have your details its into the mixer bowl with everyone else. Even their 'AI Chat Bot' has a very lack lustre guide on finding the correct details or info and when it fails just diverts you to a 'contact us page' which is back to the week turn-around time for any human feedback from this company.
I'm sure the service they deliver is fine, but for when something goes wrong, the 2 guys running the support desk and sales desk are stretched thin
Amber pricing is a dynamic model that reflects real-time energy costs. If you wish one can choose to charge or discharge the battery. Or you can leave it to Amber's algorithm. Most of the time I am in credit.
Incredibly difficult to contact and resolve issues with. Email responses incredibly slow with lots of excuses as to why it is so slow. Same old same old.
One of the most frustrating businesses I have ever dealt with. Phone contact is impossible.

I have been with Amber since they hit the market they were great back then ...now their astronomical price spikes in my area in Melbourne ranging from $6 to $20 kw are just ridiculous and they start at 2pm to 10pm but today it's been all day not once in the green. And their fees of $20 pm add that to daily usage fee and it's $1.41 it's a joke. We are seniors with no more fit we just can't afford power bills of $150 ,to $200 pm and we can't even use power so many hrs of the day. Looking for another provider had enough...could never ever recommend Amber to anyone
