Review summary
48 Mobile has room for improvement based on customer feedback. Customers particularly appreciate service and great value, though some mention concerns about customer service and expensive.
The worst operator I've ever used. The internet is absolutely unstable. The speed is 0.2mb/s and this is 4g coverage? According to diagnostics, it feels like they're "scattering" it across different servers, like some kind of parasite. Ping is crazy. +- normal internet only at night. I don't recommend it
False Advertising Buyer Beware.
You have to purchase a plan by contract before you get your free month and then you have very little data as they say it's a FAIR USAGE POLICY.
Absolutely A Disgrace.
It Looks like a great deal but it's not.
Beware.
Absolutely terrible. Indescribably useless. Data rarely ever works, and if it does, it’s 3g. There is no roaming despite what they say. I’ve tried everything and even got in contact with 48 to fix the issue and still nothing works. On top of that, you are not able to call non Irish numbers. UK, Spain, America etc. Complete joke. I don’t understand how something can be so useless. I am not usually the type to leave reviews and complain about things, but holy god 48 is terrible. The price is good, but the quality of services needs a serious overhaul.
If you are going abroad, get a Three or Vodafone SIM, even if it's just while you are abroad. 48 internet will not work. Texts and calls work and connection to WiFi works. There are issues with the APN, even if you try reconfigure it. Disaster. Nearly spent the night in the street because of no internet and also had to purchase an Italian plan and phone here.
Regret not reading the reviews here before signing up.
**If you travel at all, don't use these guys.**
One week trip to Italy, almost missed late-night pickup and entry to apartment because no network.
Several hours over two days wasted trying to connect with network before agents decided to come clean and admit there are known issues with roaming. Dishonest as hell.
Seriously damaged the remainder of my short trip being unable to get work-critical SMS messages, auth codes, etc
Leaving this hopeless network immediately. Absolute disaster for anyone who travels.
Don't sign up with 48.ie if you will need to access the internet abroad. I am a developer and I sometimes need to check on our online systems while abroad so when I signed up with 48.ie I did it on a second SIM and a second handset so that I'd have my current phone as a backup. The first day I arrived in Hungary, I realized I had no internet on the 48.ie phone so I spent a couple of hours with the help of my other phone looking up help pages and community groups and finally got it working by changing some APN settings. This shouldn't be necessary, if I was a non tech person with no backup phone, I wouldn't have been able to fix it. Already my conclusion would have been that this is not a service i should rely on for roaming purposes. I have been mainly using my backup phone since but now a couple of days later i decided to test the 48.ie phone again and low and behold there was no internet service available on it again. The APN settings are still the the way I left them. I couldn't be bothered spending any more time trying to get it to work. I will just cancel it when I get home. It was cheap lesson, only cost me €10 for one month. From my own experience and reading the experience of others On-line, I would recommend to anyone considering 48.ie for roaming to stay as far away from them as you possibly can.
Do not use 48 if you ever leave Ireland!! Arrived in Italy to no service. Tried various fixes, but could then only make and receive calls- no data at all. Luckily my companion had my travel documents on their phone. Back in Ireland and still no service. Spent a considerable time on to agent. Solution- send for a new sim which will take 5-7 days to arrive. Absolutely ridiculous. Repeat- if you go abroad with 48 be prepared to have no boarding pass, no COVID cert and no passenger locator form- AVOID!
Honestly can't stress enough how bad this network is. Switched over last year based on the price and it's been nothing but issues ever since. Never had any problems with my previous providers, now anytime I go abroad or return to Ireland I don't have service despite it being covered in my plan. The coverage is dreadful. I urge anyone in Ireland just go with another company, pay the extra few quid a month or whatever it is, 48 is not worth the stress it will cause you.
Tragically slow 4g and inconsistent everywhere I go
Garbage with regards to mobile internet. Calls and texts are fine but that's hardly noteworthy these days. Mobile data is abysmally slow and even worse is that it's inconsistent. I could sit in the same spot and get a meager 50kb/s and then a spike up to 1mb, only to drop to zero within a minute. Offering 100gigs a month is easy when your speeds make it impossible to get through even a tenth of that.
Great if you never roam. We were in Italy for a few days, had messaging and standard dialing but no data. It caused us no end of problems, so much so that we couldn't catch our return flight to Dublin ( no data so couldn't file the Covid locator) in Bergamo Airport so weren't allowed board the flight. Essentially it's my fault for assuming that roaming with 48 would be the same as when I had a Virgin mobile account. The moral of the story is that if you roam 48 are appalling, that's without going into the technical details about ANN'S etc.
I'm a very competent tech guy, take it from me if you leave Ireland you've lost all Web connectivity using 48. Better to use one of the better options, Virgin, Vodafone or Eir.
Very poor customer service - contacted through the online sites -chat box; had no service at all after changing phones a week after monthly top up.
Tried each evening to resolve the problem with the customer service 'agents' online - all had either very poor understanding of English or evaded responsibility to deal with the issue playing 'pass the parcel' and handing over to a 'technical expert' - each new chat session or dealing with the 'tech expert' I had to re explain the issue and this sapped up time; a running down the clock tactic; they 'knock off' on the chat box customer service in whichever Asian country at 8pm GMT, so often at 7.40pm theyd terminate the chat box session.
All attempts to get them to refund the 3 weeks I had no service at all came to nothing - they seem puzzled as to why I ask for this, and equally perplexed as to why I had to.move service providers....
Avoid this company if you rely heavily on your phone to stay in contact; as soon as you encounter a technical problem with their service they give you the stonewall/ gaslighting/runaround treatment....
I have been a customer with 48 probably for a year now. I was scared initially as I didn't know about them. Now I am so glad I moved all my family numbers to 48. Many thanks for the service and price! Don't be ripped off by the big telecom companies!
