AVOID COLLINGWOOD AT ALL COSTS! Take into consideration all negative reviews and don’t overlook it like I did!!! Before purchasing I called them to double check everything and was mislead over the phone, which made me go for the worse option. I misunderstood the fine prints because they were not clearly written, and are also misleading. Not to mention the spelling mistakes over the emails exchanged. I purchased learner insurance for a set amount of months, passed my driving test before the policy ended and they are refusing to refund the money for the months I will not use the learner insurance (which I have no option but to cancel). I’ve lost £160. They are claiming I never spoke to one of their agents which is a lie. Why would I have bought a policy over others without having spoken to anyone? Do not recommend them in the slightest! Go for reputable insurance companies instead, cheap becomes costly and it’s not worth it! Regardless of policy you go for its clear that you will be at loss!

So, we took out a Collingwood Learner policy for my daughter on our car. She passed her test yesterday and as per their instructions, I cancelled the policy. The next thing I get is an email telling me I owe another £40 cancellation fee (Tax). But they force you to cancel the policy, and then tel you you have to pay an admin fee. Ok, it’s in the T's and C's. But they know full well no one thinks that will apply to them, because why would it. So not only do they get 2 months risk free for the policy, they get a nice little bonus in the process. It's an absolute disgrace. They justify this by claiming there are two parts to the company and one demands the fee off the other....but don't just take my word for it. Here is a copy of their justification. They have you over a barrel. Thank you for your email and I am sorry that you are unhappy with the cancellation process. We, as the insurance intermediary, are a separate company to your insurer, Collingwood Insurance Company Limited (CICL). Your insurer stipulates within their Terms and Conditions that the policy must be cancelled once our policyholder has passed their practical driving test. This applies to all customers, and I can also confirm that had we not been informed that you had passed your practical driving test, we would have conducted verification checks when processing a renewal invitation, at this point we would have been notified by the DVLA that you had passed, the insurer CICL, would have enforced cancellation and charges would still apply, therefore you have not been treated any different to any other customer who notifies us or doesn’t, the same charges apply to all. Upon cancellation, we Collingwood Insurance Services UK Limited (CISL), apply a non-refundable £40.00 cancellation processing fee as outlined in our Terms of Business Agreement, our fees allow us to maintain policies throughout the policy term. I look forward to their generic condescending reply.
As experienced by others who have noted the same, the £40 'cancellation' fee is just another way for Collingwood to make money. I see no way a £40 fee for cancelling a policy can be justified, particularly when you are forced to cancel once your driving test has been passed. It is simply an additional, unavoidable cost of the policy that should be more clearly documented when you apply. BEWARE - if you purchase an annual policy, factor in this additional £40 fee. I should have read the reviews before purchasing as - when this fee is factored into the cost - other companies offer more competitive pricing and better customer service.
AVOID !!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you’re a learner driver avoid this company at all costs ! My partner set this up for me, biggest mistake ever. If you’re planning to pass your test within 1-3 months they will charge you 75£ + 100% to 90% of the oustanding policy. Passed onto IFB and RSA.
The insurance process was fine and we didn't have to make any claims so I can't comment on that. But when you take an annual policy and you pass your test or simply don't want to renew at the end of the year they charge you £40 for the privilege of doing this. As far as I can see there's no work involved, so who knows what the £40 is covering. It's in the small print, so my own fault for not reading this, but I've had years of insurance before taking this on for my daughter and never had to pay a cancellation fee for not renewing or for cancelling if you paid the policy in full. They effectively get a few months free from you when you say you've passed your test (as you don't get any refund on your annual payment) and also get £40!!! Ridiculous. After Collingwood's response I want to clarify the point of my review. I am warning new customers of this fee. You can't avoid it so it's effectively a hidden fee and I fee it is an underhand way of charging, that most new customers won't be aware of. They would charge it upfront if it was a logical, fair fee, because it can't be avoided on an annual policy. Let's be honest, no one reads every single sentence of the small print - for a start you need a legal degree for some of it and you'd also need a lot of time! So I am warning new customers to add this £40 to your budgeting, or avoid Collingwood altogether.
Good service , especially my last call with a young lady , she went above and beyond to sort my issue and call me back within timescale she advised, which was fantastic that she took ownership and followed through , wanted to give her a personal compliment but not sure of her name .. pls look it up and say thankyou
I certainly won't be using Collingwood again. Please be aware that if you cancel your policy for any reason after month 9 they charge an extra £40 fee to the card that you took out the original insurance on. My son passed his driving test with enough time to actually claim some money back on his policy but I forgot to cancel. I spoke to a Collingwood advisor today and it seems that they actually monitor the driving licence status of the learner (so she told me) which is why I was sent a reminder in the last 3 months of the policy. If you act on that reminder and cancel the policy at that point a £40 charge is due. If they have all the information about when you've passed your test, then as far as I am concerned there's nothing stopping them sending a reminder to cancel the policy in good time. This would not only to save the £40 fee but also allow you to claim any rebate owing for the unused insurance. In my opinion this company is dishonest in not sending the reminder sooner and they know full well that if people receive a reminder in the last 3 months of the policy they will enact upon that reminder and cancel thus making them liable to the £40 charge. I have 2 other children who will eventually need to take out learner insurance and I certainly won't be insuring with this broker due to their devious business practices. BE WARNED, EITHER CANCEL IMMEDIATELY IF YOU PASS YOUR TEST WELL BEFORE THE LAST 3 MONTHS OR JUST LET THE POLICY LAPSE IF YOU PASS AFTER MONTH 9. Don't let these Charlatan's take more of your hard earned money than they're entitled to! Here's a list of all the fees they charge as a Broker for anyone contemplating Collingwood Learner Insurance as of 26/07/2024 by email from Collingwood. 1. New Business and Renewal Insurance services processing. Fee £75 2. Insurance services monthly administration Fee (administration fee when paying for the policy by monthly automatic card payment option). Fee £4.50 3. Card processing fee (all card payments). Fee 0.00 (Only because it's been illegal since 2018) 4. Mid-term adjustment fee. Fee £35 5. Cancellation fee. Fee £40 6. Hard copy of policy documentation. Fee £35 Their trumped up excuse for charging all these fees in their email to me was stated "We, as the insurance intermediary have our own fees, which includes our non-refundable cancellation processing fee of £40.00" Neither the actual Collingwood Learner Motor Insurance Policy Document on the Collingwood website or the Product Info Summary on the Collingwood Gibraltar website show any cancellation fees whatsoever. Because Collingwood UK is acting as a 'so called' intermediary Broker for their own insurance company based in Gibraltar they think that it's OK to add on Brokerage fees to administer their own policy! The real insurance company is Collingwood Insurance Company Ltd, 7.02 World Trade Centre, Gibraltar, GX11 1AA. I have copies of their full Policy Document and their Product Summary for the benefit of the Financial Services Ombudsman. There is a Telegraph article entitled "Insurers Flock To Gibraltar" which requires a subscription but you can read the Cached version. It's interesting reading. Companies like Collingwood do this primarily as a tax dodge but more importantly they can also side step the heavy regulation UK based Insurers are subject to and the solvency requirements they're obliged to carry in the UK.
