Review summary
Chrysalis courses receives consistently positive reviews. Customers particularly appreciate professional and service, though some mention concerns about communication and expensive.
Sandra our tutor for year 2 has been so supportive and helpful and brings passion and knowledge in abundance. She shares so much and her feedback is thorough and thoughtful and so helpful. She's been amazing and I'm excited to continue the second half of the year and progress onto year three. Thank you so much to the staff behind the scenes and placements team too for always being ready to answer queries and help where they can.
I have been with chrysalis for 2.5 yrs, my 1st year was enjoyable, with a great tutor, my 2nd year not so much, however, on year 3 1st session in January, my current tutor gave me structure, with slideshows & video clips to explain in more depth and giving examples of the different topics, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first 5 modules as I am a visual learner, the guidance given is great by Sarah Jones and she is a real fit for our group, I am looking forward to the rest of my final year with Chrysalis
I have had a great experience training with Chrysalis. The pluralistic content of the course has been very interesting and I believe has put me in good stead for my future as a counsellor. Most beneficial to my experience though is my tutor, Martina. Martina is incredibly knowledgeable, always puts us at ease, fills us with confidence and gives valuable feedback.
Studied with Chrysalis
I was quite shocked to read some of the other reviews below so wanted to give my opinion on Chrysalis.
I personally had a great time studying on the course, the tutor was knowledgeable, the notes were informative and i gained everything i wanted from the course. studying part time worked for me as i have a other commitments so all in all a really positive experience, yes i would recommend studying with chrysalis, in fact i was recommended by a friend myself.
BEWARE THE CONTRACT. DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THREE YEARS.
This company is very misleading in the contract they have you sign if you are wanting to pay up front for three years. It reads as though you are bound to pay only when you have taken the first module of each year but in fact it is if you take the first three classes of the first year you are then not going to get anything back should your circumstances change or alter so that neither they can deliver or you can attend. There is no goodwill or get out clause. So once you have taken three classes in the first year you can wave your money goodbye. I have recently taken the first year up to module 6 before my life altered dramatically and I was away for two modules and was offered the chance to move to Europe and start a new life. I cannot come back into the uk to study due to work commitments with the new life in Europe and they cannot deliver a distance learning alternative. So although I have given them over four months notice of the first year they will not hear of returning any funds from year two and three. My next port of call is Ofsted and Higher Education authorities to see if there is any come back against this company. Please do not sign your money over to this company. Pay for a year at a time if you wish to study with them. You never know what may happen in life and these guys simply don't care.
You may read the reply from chrysalis below but I have been in phone contact and emailed and spoken to my tutor and was left in no doubt that this was their conclusion when a letter arrived on my desk yesterday, hence my writing this review. So itβs bizarre to read that if I have a complaint I should contact them ???
I have and my tale is the outcome. Beware this company. If anyone at chrysalis would like to contact me to offer me a refund Iβll happily take your call or email.
I completed my studies a few years ago with Chrysalis. Thank goodness I had previously completed a 2 year counselling course somewhere else. Theory wise i learnt a certain amount. There was no support for students, I initiated a small group for a few who were within a reasonable distance. We were discouraged from joining BACP and told the NCS was the one to join. However once I finished my L5 I found I could not join the BACP as I had no placement, again not encouraged and not enough tutorial hours. If you want to be taken seriously as a counsellor you need to be a member of BACP. I have since completed my Adlerian Pyschology Course, am a student member of BACP which I hope after submitting my Case Study to become a full member. Chrysalis were not interested in my complaints and concerns. Having a refund or even a partial one would have been the decent thing to do, I feel that I wasted a lot of money that got me nowhere. I work as a counsellor and that is not down to Chrysalis.
I trained with Chrysalis and it was a joke. Our first-year Hypnotherapy instructor said, "I use hypnosis on rare occasions." And it showed! Techniques that I have since discovered are fairly basic and staple inductions for hypnotherapists were either dismissed or explained really poorly, due to the instructors lack of familiarity.
The instructor literally read from the notes each week. As such, she could not answer any questions that veered from her "script."
When I began my second year, the instructor - a different one to the first one - clearly had a very limited knowledge of his subject. He was meant to be teaching a "multi-modal" approach to counselling. Yet, when I asked him about Solution-focused Brief Therapy he didn't know what I was talking about!
Finally, don't be fooled by any responses you get from Chrysalis Not-for-Profit, implying they are somehow a different company to Chrysalis Courses - and therefore can't be held accountable. They are based at the same address!

My experience of Chrysalis has been extremely disappointing and I would not recommend them at all. We have had a poor tutor who was unable to train, and chrysalis refuse to accept the situation or review it. I have spent a lot of money on year 1 and certainly not got any value for my money. I have now dropped out due to the poor quality of training
I completed my diploma in psychotherapeutic counselling with Chrysalis in 2016. The course offered an excellent blend of academic study with classroom learning and practice. The tutors were extremely knowledgeable and experienced in their own fields and were able to bring this into the classroom. I am unsure why Chrysalis have had such bad reviews as that was certainly not my experience of them.If you want tutors with massive egos who teach you how to make money out of your clients then I accept Chrysalis may not suit you. However, if you want to know how to put your client first and learn academic theories and models then it IS FOR YOU.
I now run my own successful private practice.
Chrysalis Adv. Dip. is an Ideal course for those who have undergone counselling skills training previously, and want to complete their studies (to diploma) but need a part time course due to busy life. It is important to recognise that you will greatly benefit from personal therapy whilst undertaking this course - unfortunately Chrysalis does detail this as a requirement and leaves it to individuals to choose. There is a reasonable support system in place i.e. tutor and main office and regional support. But please be aware that final year placements are difficult to find which is exacerbated by the lesser well known National Counselling Society. So you will need to secure a placement well before you start your third year. My rating of three stars pertains to not only course content and teaching but the more challenging aspects mentioned in this review.
They try to act professional, but when problems arise they don't take responsibility or look after their students. They expect the students to carry on without feeling. They miss spell emails and course work regularly. If you are prepared to take the journey with them you will get results eventually but it can be a bumpy journey. I'd say they are good but not excellent based on my experience so far. Also allot of people drop out throughout the time.
Chrysalis have been wonderful, right from my application they have been hugely supportive. Everyone I have spoken to has been helpful and encouraging. Jaswinder is a fabulous tutor! She has endless amounts of experience and is keen to share her knowledge with us in a safe and encouraging environment. I am so excited to continue my progression and development with Chrysalis
