2nd year tutor has been incredible

Sandra our tutor for year 2 has been so supportive and helpful and brings passion and knowledge in abundance. She shares so much and her feedback is thorough and thoughtful and so helpful. She's been amazing and I'm excited to continue the second half of the year and progress onto year three. Thank you so much to the staff behind the scenes and placements team too for always being ready to answer queries and help where they can.

Great experience …

I have found crystals to be great training Especially silly with Melanie Phelps, great teacher

Chrysalis/tutor

I have been with chrysalis for 2.5 yrs, my 1st year was enjoyable, with a great tutor, my 2nd year not so much, however, on year 3 1st session in January, my current tutor gave me structure, with slideshows & video clips to explain in more depth and giving examples of the different topics, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first 5 modules as I am a visual learner, the guidance given is great by Sarah Jones and she is a real fit for our group, I am looking forward to the rest of my final year with Chrysalis

Great experience!

I have had a great experience training with Chrysalis. The pluralistic content of the course has been very interesting and I believe has put me in good stead for my future as a counsellor. Most beneficial to my experience though is my tutor, Martina. Martina is incredibly knowledgeable, always puts us at ease, fills us with confidence and gives valuable feedback.

The course itself is good

The course itself is good, subject matter is there. The issue is that the level of support you get is dependent on the tutor, hich can be hit and miss. Our first year tutor had very little interest in the students, and basically just told us to read the notes and left us to it with little guidance. Our second and third year tutor is much more engaged and I feel like I'm getting way more out of these classes than the previous ones. The other issue is finding a placement. No help is given on this and dependant on where you live there may not be enough organisations who take chrysalis students ( they want BACP or ukcp accredited students) I had nine rejections before finding one to take me, and a couple of people in my class still haven't gotten one. Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying this course but don't do it unless you are prepared to organise yourself!

Superb training, a great foundation to a great career!

Over the past 3 years I have learnt so much. It’s strange as I wasn’t really looking forward to the first year of Hypnotherapy training but now I run my own successful business providing Hypnotherapy and was able to give up working for someone else within 6 months of qualifying! Admittedly I have completed further training throughout the course but I’ve always seen Chrysalis as a great foundation to my development as a Psycho-therapeutic Counsellor and have no complaints, remember this learning is your own experience and it’s well worth a try, don’t let any negative reviews put you off my self employed business is booming and now I can offer so much more to my clients, I love my job and wouldn’t be in the position I am now if it wasn’t for Chrysalis training. The two tutors I had over the three years were professional and very knowledgeable. I highly recommend Chrysalis training!

The Real Chrysalis Course

Looking back, I can now see that the interview was just a sales pitch, and it was sold very well to me. I didn't want to do the hypnotherapy course, however it forms part of the three year counselling course, and was only for a year. It was interesting at first, and I was qualified to practice at the end of that year. However, the tutor was terrible. She constantly told us about her personal life, however didn't know the name of anyone in the class, which started as a group of 28, and finished as a group of 16. Her teaching style was to read out the notes in the handout she had given us. It is scarry to think that after a year of this that someone is qualified to work with people in a professional way. Hypnotherapy is becoming increasingly popular and therapists charge a fortune for their services, however, I would be wary that these people might have had as little training as I had. The two years of counselling is being provided by a completely different tutor. Who learnt our names, and a little about us in the first session, which she remembered when she next saw us, 2 months later. This was a massive improvement, and her teaching style is amazing! She observes, assists, and gives constructive feedback in our practical work, giving real examples of her work on any subject that we are learning about. However, I feel that there is alot of theory, and not enough practical work within the course. I am in my 3rd and final year now, and have been trying for 4 months to find a placement. We have had 7 more people drop out, mainly due to the difficulty of finding a placement, which Chrysalis do not assist with. The main issues that people are having is that a) the Chrysalis course is not recognised by many organisations, and b) we are obliged to be members of the NCS as part of the course, however many placement providers (the big organisations that we all want to part of) will only accept students who are members of the BACP or UKCP, who will not accept us as members, as we are on the Chrysalis Course... The other reason that so many drop out is that we were told at the start of the course that it would only take up 8 hours a week, and could be completed while working full time. This is a lie. I would say at least 18 hours a week study, and then 2 - 6 hours a week practice. I have had to go part time for the final year, and am now worried about the cost of insurance, and a supervisor this year, aswell as the compulsory annual membership of the NCS, that they do not tell you about, and the cost of books that are not available at the local library. Not forgetting the annual AIM awards fees, that are not included in the cost of the course, and you are not reminded to pay, and then are charged extra for late payment. We also have had issues receiving the AIM awards certificate, which is in addition to the certificate that says you have passed that year, and shows that you have completed an accredited course. No one actually knows why we need this extra certificate, or why it's cost is not added to the course fees, as we are told that we must have it!? Good luck to anyone concidering this route to becoming a counsellor, as you will need it. I would recommend that you spend a little more money, and research to find a course provider who will provide you with a more recognised starting point to your career.

Not enough!

I feel we are not getting enough on this course in terms of learning hours, I think once a month is just not enough, i know it is an affordable course which is why i committed however the content is just skipped through, we don’t have hardly enough practice time and im sorry to say sometimes i feel embarrassed to say i am studying with chrysalis because no one has heard of it or people have heard of it but dont hold it in high regard

Excellent value course

Excellent value course. Good course content but sometimes variable tutor quality. Course materials are essentially good but definitely need a good and thorough proofread! If you are motivated to do this then Chrysalis are excellent and if you do want to do this then you should be self motivated anyway! It would be useful to see exemplar case studies though, as this causes a lot of unnecessary stress. Also not being approved by BACP can make placements harder to find. Loved doing hypnotherapy first - gives a different approach and angle that is very useful.

The course content was excellent and…

The course content was excellent and challenging, my tutors were brilliant, and delivery, one face to face study day a month fitted well with my need. However some Chrysalis systems and administration were very frustrating, time consuming and difficult to manage.

Have a good think first...

If you are thinking about enrolling onto this course please make sure that you carry out prior investigations to ensure that this is really the right thing for you in terms of your career or life goals. The course runs once per month and you are required to meet up with other students weekly to practice, this was useful, however more practical classroom based lessons would have been beneficial, it was felt as though we were teaching each other at times, and we were not always sure that we were getting it right as we were all learners… what do we know?! The tutor was very good, experienced and very entertaining. The Chrysalis course material wasn’t the best, there wasn’t enough emphasis on producing scripts, you were sort of left to go away and write your own and when the occasion called for it a few of the scripts would be marked and feedback given. But this was nowhere near enough learning - excellent scripts are key in becoming successful as a Hypnotherapist. We were provided with a list of books which were required reading and were to be utilised when writing essays and case studies I think they cost me approximately £60 - £70, I received very little benefit from these books and found more useful information online. Lastly, I wish I had considered more before I enrolled (this is my own fault for not investigating properly) some of the costs of being a Hypnotherapist. I work full time and will do for the foreseeable future, to start up my own Hypnotherapy business (a second job essentially) would mean I immediately hit the 40% tax rate (for money made via hypnotherapy), there is a yearly subscription fee to be listed on the National Hypnotherapy Society Register which is £100+, you need insurance and you also need a supervisor that you are required to speak to monthly and I believe the going rate is approx. £50 per session. This obviously doesn’t include all other costs of running a business. Although I have passed this course and have the certificate I feel in no way qualified or ready to treat clients, and I am undecided on whether this was the right course/ course provider for me… I self-funded the course (some received funding via their workplace) and I can’t face the fact that I may have just wasted a lot of money. Some positives (so not to end on a negative) - I did enjoy learning how hypnotherapy works and how people think, I supposed its made me more conscious of human behaviours and why people may behave is such ways. I am also very conscious about how impressionable children are and how their early years can affect the rest of their lives. Also, met some amazing people who I have kept in touch with.

Chrysalis Studies

I had a brilliant tutor for my Level 3-5 Counselling course. She made the course work come alive and we had a really supportive group. There was a core group of us that had started with the Certificate of Hypnotherapy that were together for three years. Amazing to go through this growth in knowledge and self development. I would recommend this experience. Mary

I have enjoyed my experience with chrysalis.

I have enjoyed my experience with chrysalis, due mainly to my teacher. He made the teaching interesting and engaging, though doing all the studying and assignments have been challenging, I have learnt so much about myself.I would recommend chrysalis to others , and am grateful to my teacher who has been supportive, humourous and encouraging.
