A Service Plan that rendered No Service when Needed

Through the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, I have been paying for a Water and Sewer Service Line Protection Program since the year 2013. On January 24, 2024 I called American Water Resources and told them that sewage was coming up through a drain in my driveway. According to the Plan I could only use a plumber that they sent and they sent a worker from Joseph L. Balkan Plumbing in Richmond Hills NY. That worker just looked into the water/sewer pit and said that some cement was covering a pipe and/or trap and that I must hire someone to remove that cement. Then workers at Balkan said that I must send a picture by phone text of the pit with the cement removed. They they said, do not send a phone text, but send a picture to an email address. the worker who had done the work and put the picture on his cell phone said that he did not have an email address. Then they said he could send the picture by a phone text. When I asked workers at Balkan if they received the picture, they said yes but wanted the worker to send the picture again. Balkan workers said they would call me but did not. My lawyer said that Balkan was just giving me a runaround. On Friday, Jan. 26, at 7:43 a.m.I called Balkan and they said they said that a worker, Kevin, would come to my house between 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Instead, another worker from Balkan came, unannounced, around 11:30 a.m., looked into the pit and said that it was half full of water. About 2 hours later, a worker from Balkan said on a phone call that their plumbers do not pump water. I then hung up and called another plumbing company. This efficient company sent a worker within an hour to inspect the pit. The workers from this other company came at 8:00 a.m. and completed fixing the broken sewer line by 1:15p.m. I had to pay this efficient plumbing company $3500. which is about the same amount that I had paid American Water Resources during the 10 years I had the Service Plan with them. Naturally, I have since cancelled my Plan with American Water Resources.

Worthless policy

In September 2023 had a water line leak. My back yard looked like a lake and no water pressure inside. I called my plumber and he came out the next day and replaced water line. I called this company to file a claim, not knowing that they pick their own plumber. I was told that someone would call me. Four days later someone from AWR did call and told me that they could fix it on October 4. When I told them it was already fixed they sent me a reimbursement form. I obviously could not take pictures of before and during but I send pictures after the repair was made and also a picture of some of the pipe that was damaged. Other than the call in September, AWR has not contacted me at all. I called in October, November, and December. I was always told that everything was moving along and to be patient. On January 12, I called again. They told me that they had sent me the wrong reimbursement form and would send me another. When it was received it was the same form that I sent in in Septermber. I called eto see what was going on and this is the first time I heard the word 'denied.' Evidently my claim was denied in October. I was told that someone would call me and explain it all to me. That was five days ago. No call. I have had this insurance since 2016. I trusted these people. It was nothing but a scam from the very beginning.

Scam

My husband was going to sign up for this program, however, I told him to wait because I wanted to check it online to see if it was legit. I think everyone for the reviews because after I read through everything and found out, they were not associated with any utility company. Definitely showed red flags. Be careful with what you sign up for especially when they want to do an automatic withdrawal from your account, I am so happy for everyone’s honesty that I picked up everything and threw it in the trash. Always do your research. We will find the answers that you want from real people and not the company.

They’ll screw you!!

I called to get assistance and I’m told that a year ago (11/2022) a credit card charge was rejected (they billed a defunct cc), but they’ve been billing me and I’ve been paying every month since then. But 1 unbilled unpaid charge from a year ago (with no email or other notices that it was unpaid) means I can’t get any service until it’s paid. AAARRRGGGHHHH!! Avoid this company at all costs!

I have two accounts and the price went up 30% on both of these. I asked the rep why and he just replied everything is going up. The offer 50% of the rate on both accounts but I was so mad, this is price gouging. Weird how you can call and get the reduced rate. I refused the offer. I can't believe American Water has their name associated with this company.

American Water sold American Water…

American Water sold American Water Resources to an investment firm called Apax Partners LLP in 2021. As part of the deal American Water and Apax have a rev share deal where American Water does the billing and collections. Because American Water pushes auto-pay and paperless billing this creates an opportunity for Apax and American Water to raise rates and change people's plans without their consent; thinking that no one is really paying attention - it is a tactic that works well. Additionally Apax tries to stop people from cancelling and American Water helps them by not allowing you to cancel thru them. It is a very deliberate plan to rip off American Water/American Water Resources customers. If you have been scammed by Apax/American Water Resources (and if you signed up then it's most likely that you have been) I would encourage you to reach out to both the Utility Board and Insurance Regulatory Authority in your state. And please do yourself a favor and set yourself a reminder to occasionally review your auto-pay bills. AWR owes me about $300 that I will likely never recieve

I’m actually surprised by all the one…

I’m actually surprised by all the one star reviews- I’ve used AWR for my house as well as my rental property. Yes their customer service sucks. However when my rental property had a leak in the water line it was covered by AWR and only cost me my 19$ fee that I had been paying for a year or so. They had someone fix it right away, rip up the concrete out front and also fix the pavement. Granted that was 5 years ago. They also fixed a waterline brake in my house that I was selling days before I closed . They were hard to deal with ( AWR not the plumber) but again only cost the 19$ a month I spent- rather than the 5k it would have cost

Typical Bait and Switch Tactics

I just received their brochure in the mail and instead of filling out the application I decided to call the listed number and enroll. What I discovered is the annual price was double what is offered in the flyer/application. $41.88 vs. $82.56 annual fee. I also checked out their online portal and received a different annual price of $65.88 annual price. Nothing like dealing with an obvious scam operation.

Awful Customer Service

Their customer service is the worst I've ever dealt with. They did not process a phone renewal payment and never notified me when they had the accounts canceled. Two accounts for plumbing. I'm being charged an auto monthly fee, that after 3 phone calls, they still did not know why. They put me on hold and do not come back to the phone! I have no idea what this charge is for. So....I give them a one star! Carla from Ocala, Fla

Dubious Scam Company

Dubious Scam Company. Sends out fake and scary mailers under the name of the Utility company using their logos and doesn’t disclose that they are not affiliated with the utility company. Total waste of my time trying to understand why it is so important for me to get their coverage since they are making me think that it’s my Utility company who is reaching out. Come to find out, they are just after money under disguise of insurance program without actual service or value to offer when the need arise. Good I read these reviews before getting sucked into their fake marketing plan. Always research a company before signing up.

Save your money…

This is the worst company ever all they do is take your money and DO NOT provide any services. Was told it would take 24 to 48 hours to find a provider in my area, called them back after waiting 5 days and still no service. Wanted me to find my own provider pay them and then send them the bill. I toke out this insurance to avoid out of pocket expenses and the hassle of looking for a plumber. SAVE YOUR MONEY I paid several months of premiums and got nothing,

This company is a JOKE!

This company is a JOKE!! I'm reporting them to the BBB. Three attempts to obtain water/sewage protection. No one knows their job. They try to upsell services, they keep you on the phone with their nonsense, and never follow through with anything. They are a SCAM company. Stay away at all costs. Additionally, the customer service reps barely speak English. Very difficult to communicate with them.
