I had planned to take my third trip with Intrepid this year.
However, based on my overall experiences with Intrepid, they have definitely lost a customer now, and I cannot recommend them to anyone looking for a reliable travel company, especially when traveling alone to a foreign country.
1. First trip: The first time I booked with Intrepid was a trip to Madagascar. Since it’s a distant destination, most people need to leave their home country 1-2 days before the tour starts. On the very day I began my journey to this beautiful place, I received information that Intrepid had completely changed the itinerary – the tour now ended on the opposite side of the country.
This was a disaster because I had already arranged further travel plans after the Intrepid tour. While on my way to the airport, I had to book an additional flight at my own expense, and since domestic flights in Madagascar are not available daily, I lost two days of my onward trip. Fortunately, the local Malagasy tour operator with whom I had organized the onward trip was flexible, adjusted the itinerary, and didn’t even charge for the lost days. Intrepid, on the other hand, did not even apologize for the last-minute change, claiming it was within their rights and covered by their terms & conditions.
Additionally, I had paid over €3,000 for the 15-days Intrepid tour. With 10 participants on the tour, that amounts to €30,000 in revenue. Generally, this wouldn't be an issue, but considering the very basic accommodations offered – some with room prices as low as $8-$10 per night – and the low cost of living in Madagascar, I don’t believe the tour was worth the price, and I felt ripped off. I doubt they pay their guides and drivers enough to justify these prices. Nevertheless, Madagascar itself and its people are incredibly beautiful, and the local guide was fantastic.
2. Second Trip: Since the local guide in Madagascar was excellent and since things can always go wrong, I decided to give Intrepid a second chance and booked a 10-day trip to Bolivia. The only negative aspect was that our guide didn’t have a seat in our car as the tour was fully booked and had to ride in other vehicles from non-Intrepid tours. An additional car wasn’t provided. Apart from that I enjoyed the trip a lot.
3. Third Trip: As the Bolivia trip went smoothly without any major issues, I decided to book a camping trip to Western Canada with Intrepid this year. Due to the long journey to North America and because I wanted to explore Vancouver before, I arrived three days before the tour started. I enjoyed the first few days and was looking forward to the beginning of the tour. But just 1.5 days before the tour began, I received an email informing me that the tour was canceled due to wildfires. Although I completly understand the reason for the cancellation and the fact that the situation was out of their control - I was deeply disappointed by the way it was handled and the lack of support or assistance from such a large company as Intrepid. All I got was a “We’re sorry.”
I believe the Intrepid staff I contacted via chat were personally sympathetic and genuinely sorry, but there was nothing helpful from the organization itself. They offered no alternatives or local support.
As one night in Vancouver was part of the tour, they didn’t even consider offering me this one night as emergency accommodation as I had already arrived and was at risk of being left without a place to stay. When I asked them to share my contact information with other tour participants so we could connect and possibly organize an alternative trip together, they refused as well. At least I got a refund for the tour price.
When I desperately tried to arrange an alternative myself at short notice during peak season, I found out that other travel agencies had adjusted their itineraries or offered their guests some local assistance.
I have traveled a lot in my life, been to all continents, and visited many fascinating countries. Almost all of them are exciting, beautiful, and most local guides are very dedicated -and usually there is always something that doesn't go as intented or planned - this is part of the adventure.
Regarding traveling with Intrepid, I would say that, aside from the below-standard accommodations, the company has great guides and performs well when everything goes smoothly. However, the real test comes when things go wrong. It’s precisely when you need a reliable tour company the most that you find yourself left completely on your own with Intrepid.
On 2 out of 3 tours booked with Intrepid, I experienced a lot of stress, had to organize alternatives at the very last minute, lost valuable vacation days and a lot of money. Therefore, I will not give Intrepid another chance and definitely cannot recommend them to anyone.
