I’m aware that Intrepid responds to reviews, so here’s my updated take.
I paid approximately $1,800 USD for a 9-day trip to Costa Rica. However, between the arrival and exit days, plus two days spent on a 10-hour public bus ride (costing just $11 USD each way), this effectively left only 5 days of actual activities.
On those activity days, expect to stay in 2-3 star B&Bs, often located out of town, budget, and very basic. In one hotel, there was no air conditioning as standard, which I only realized on the final night when it was too late to address since reception was closed after 7pm. For reference, I checked the room rate on Booking.com—it was just $30 USD per night.
Most activities are not included in the tour price. The most expensive one, rafting, costs $99 USD per person if booked independently. It’s clear Intrepid is profiting significantly, likely paying much less per head.
Meals were generally not included. On the first night, we received a sandwich and a small juice box, both of which seemed to be the cheapest available options.
In summary, your $1,800 USD quickly evaporates, leaving you with minimal value—budget accommodations, lengthy public bus rides, and extra out-of-pocket expenses:
Tour: $1,800 USD
Food: $215 USD
Activities: $300 USD
Flights: $900 USD
Guide Tip: $80 USD
You’d be much better off booking a 4-star hotel (around $100 USD per night) and relaxing on your own terms. If you’re looking for a social experience, consider companies like Selina, which offer flexibility without hidden costs.
Intrepid does offer premium tours, but I challenge you to request the accommodation list and compare the costs. You might be surprised at the profit margins.
In 2024, booking tours like this feels outdated—I was lazy, and I regret it. I feel like I need to experience Costa Rica all over again.
Verdict: I want my money back, I am really not happy with this company and urge everyone to reconsider using them for anything.
