Review summary

Abbey House Veterinary Hospital receives mixed feedback from its clients, with a significant number expressing dissatisfaction. While some customers praise the compassionate care provided to their pets, particularly during difficult times, many others report a lack of empathy and professionalism from the staff. Positive reviews highlight the attentive service from specific staff members, such as Scott, who is noted for his caring approach. However, numerous complaints center around high fees and perceived overcharging, with some customers feeling ripped off after emergency visits. Additionally, there are concerns about the quality of communication regarding procedures and costs, leading to frustration among pet owners. Overall, while there are commendable aspects of care, the prevailing sentiment leans towards disappointment and dissatisfaction.

Took my cat to the cleckheaton branch…

Took my cat to the cleckheaton branch as he was struggling to breathe and was prescribed medication and antibiotics for £178! 4 days later took him back to the other site in birstall, same vet, as the meds had no effect, was told it would be best to put him to sleep, the package we agreed was £170. Received a bill a week later for £198! Will not be returning with my other pets

Thank you for helping Sam be at peace.

On Thursday we had our oldest dog Sam put to sleep at Abbey House Morley. This was a really hard decision to make but his heath was declining and he was 14 and a half! But after consultation with Adam his vet it was decided to let him be in peace. On arrival the hospital was busy with owners collecting their pets or attending the vets for a consultations. We weren’t bothered about the small delay we had as it gave us all some extra time to spend with Sam. When we went into the consultation room, Adam the vet made Sam, my partner and I very much at ease his calm approach made the process soo much easier to take in. Adam explained everything to us from start to finish and Sam was just so chilled because he was ready too. The process was very smooth obviously extremely emotional but I felt Adam’s approach made the whole thing seem less stressful and less painful for me and my partner. I would like to thank Adam and the team in the back for Sam’s care over the years and in his final stages of his life. I would recommend Adam the vet and Abbey House to other pet owners in the West Yorkshire area. Thank you

I have just got back from out of hours

I have just got back from out of hours. I think I’ve been totally ripped off. They wanted to keep my dog over night and asked £1200 . I said no . They said to give him anti sickness pain killers etc . £400. I didn’t think he needed anti sickness he wasn’t sick . They gave him fluid by a syringe which I also think was unnecessary and charged me £180 for ten minutes of their time . I will never use these vets again and o will wait for my own vets to open tomorrow. I will also post what they say . I wouldn’t recommend these vets at all. Been to my own vets they gave him antibiotics and inflammation injection. He is much better. Abbey House did nothing but want money. I shall be asking for my money back .

Awful service

We took our beloved dog to Abbey House in Morley to be put to sleep as he was 17 and in poor health. This was already an extremely difficult time for me and my family which in turn was made more difficult when we had to wait 2 hours past our original appointment time. We asked numerous times about wait times and was told repeatedly that we wouldn’t be waiting longer than 30 minutes (which we was). I completely understand that veterinary services are busy however there was only 2 other people in the waiting area and 2 hours late is a joke when the situation was already hard enough. To make matters worse, this evening I went to collect our dogs ashes from the vets and the receptionist couldn’t locate them. This was a result of them spelling his name wrong on the box! This is something for me and my family to keep to remember our dog and this has upset us all massively. Baring in mind this was also 400 pound and they couldn’t even spell his name correctly (when they had this information so had no reason for it to be misspelt). To say we are disappointed with the service we have received is an understatement. I would not recommend this vets to anyone.

Failed To Carry Out Procedures

This practice is called a veterinary hospital. It is also ultimately owned by Mars Petcare. You might think it would be excellent. It is not. I took our Rottweiler there after he developed a skin problem around his right eye. I agreed he be sedated for the skin scraping so booked in for 8.15am in a week's time. Arrived at 8.15am and seen by 8.25am. The previous visit we had to wait 40 minutes and the time before, 45 minutes. The vet seemed pleasant and we agreed to 1. sedation, 2. skin scrape, 3. blood test, 4. nails cutting, so I signed the consent form. The price was £415. Waited all day to be contacted by the vet with the results. She never called. At 6.10pm a nurse called and very briefly said Max did not have mites, they did not know what the problem was and to apply some cream and take a Nexgard chew once a month (for mites/fleas/ticks). No mention of the invoice or the blood tests or the nail cutting but to collect Max at 7pm. Arrived at 7pm and had to wait until 7.40. A nurse called me in and said everything had been explained and the bill was now £473. Telling her it had not and she said she started at 7pm and had no knowledge of Max's procedures. The vet of course had gone home. Asked her about the blood test results and said they had not been done. Why not? Don't know. Asked to speak to whoever was in charge. Seems no one as they don't have admin staff evenings or nights. Even though this place calls itself a 24 hour hospital. After some words I said just get my dog and when he came through he was hardly awake, unsteady on his feet and definitely not himself. She said if I wanted to wait she would get a vet to do the blood test!!! Unbelievable. Went to the receptionist and told her the blood tests had not been done or the nail clipping. She was amazed they hadn't been. There was someone in charge if I wanted to speak to them but one vet was operating and one was with another owner so I declined. By now I just wanted out of the place. I told her I would not be paying the balance and left. We suspect Max was not sedated until at least 3pm due to his weak condition so he was cooped up in a small kennel for more than 11 hours totally unnecessarily. Do not be fooled by the grand 'hospital' name. This is just an ordinary practice with a small reception area. It is chaotically run. One far eastern vet was particularly rude and offhand when coming out to owners and one we saw previously, with a European accent, did not know what a 'tick' was. Reported to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for failing Max. If you care for your pet, do NOT come here.

Took our pug to this vets as it was…

Took our pug to this vets as it was open out of hours. I cannot understand why they have not been investigated for their INSANE prices! 1 night stay and she had sedation £1300! Then had the cheek to charge another 80 on Collection for antibiotics. I went to collect our dog to be sat there for 1 hour 45 minutes waiting for her to be brought out for us. The Chinese vet is exceptionally rude and some of the receptionist need to re think their customer service! Will categorically NEVER use these again. Turns out my pug has mucus on her chest! Wow some vet bill that eh

Pricing out of control

We used to use an independent vets called Croft House on Soothill Lane in Batley, however this has now been taken overby Abbey House. Although we were seen at short notice the pricing is out of control. We were charged £93 for a consultation and nausea injection. After checking with another local vets they confirmed they would have charged £47 for this so we'll be going there in future. We all know vets are not cheap but this is just taking advantage of people who are worried about their pet.

Had to use the emergency vets out of…

Had to use the emergency vets out of hours in Morley, on a Saturday evening, whilst the receptionist was very nice, and it was so busy, we had a distressing time. Sadly our beloved pet passed away, we got a call early sunday morning, we were told we would be called the next day, no call, by Tuesday, so i called our vet in Kippax to ask what the procedure was now, i asked for a call back, Thursday i finally got a call back. Not many options really they weren't very informative on much, i just wanted our pet back home with us. Her family. Bill was paid, then i received a nice card with sunflower seeds in, but it made me feel i only got because i paid the bill, it felt very heartless, and after asking 3 times to be taken to Kippax surgery she was sent to Morley. Didnt want to wait another 3 days to get her back so collected at morley, again reception really kind, she asked if i had a paw print, nothing mentioned in the conversations, yes it would of been nice to of been asked that, i would of said yes. The box from the crematorium was really beautiful and im glad ive got our furbaby home now. RIP I understand that they are busy vets but just felt very neglected.

Very poor empathetic and professional service

Don't use this vets if you're expecting an adequate level of empathetic or professional service. Unfortunately we had to use their emergency service, comprised of diagnosis, overnight surgery and eventually euthanasia, all in less than 24hrs. You'd think going through all of that, that the staff would make sure to apply care and attention. They didn't. 1am call to discuss surgery costs turned out to be wrong when I got the invoice in the afternoon (extra grand on top). A miscommunication between the receptionist and the surgeon, receptionist got the charges wrong. The worst was yet to come though; when picking up the ashes, my partner in tears, this was the time the receptionist chose to inform her that we had an outstanding charge on the account (we didn't), then a week later we got a letter in the post stating the same. I had to explain that I'd paid the invoice so wanted to understand their mistake and remove the charges. They'd created an additional invoice 2 days after our dog passed with a solo charge and their manual process to add bank transfers onto my account was calculated wrong. I was told I'd have a resolution the next day; I said I 100% know I've paid the invoice so the only resolution will be an apology to me. They've not called back, 4 working days later, so I guess they don't want to apologise and are just showing how poor their service is. I have no doubt those actively looking after our dog gave the best treatment, those that didn't should up their game.

My experience related to this practice was a nightmare.

My experience related to this practice has been a true nightmare. With the exclutsion of the Senior Vet Julie Roberts who admitted Falkon, my Persian cat, at the hospital on the 21 of May 2022. The cat was hospitalised 2 nights and 3 days. A Biopsy of the lump of his neck was performed on the right han side of the neck while the infection developed in 2 abscess bursts on the left-hand side only two weeks after he was discharged. The infection lasted 3 months and was eventually resolved in August 2022 with an appropriate antibiotic treatment given by another practice. Don't trust the administration, and the quality of the service as the people working there have to respond to a greedy administration.

Abbey House Vets are simply amazing

Abbey House Vets are simply amazing. My 11 week old French Bulldog hurt his back right leg playing with his siblings and was limping for a couple of days. My regular vet is away and there locum was fully booked so i rung Abbey House and they couldnt have been more accomadating. I rung at 9.30 am and was seen and back home by 12.30. Our little boy has just pulled his leg thankfully and is on the mend. Outstanding vets and the reception staff are second to none. Thank you so much

Night & Day!!

As with Steve HH, I too moved from RH as the quality of service had deteriorated and with no full time vet I was concerned about the support my Luna-puss was getting as numerous visits resulted in zero progress. As I had recently moved to BD19 I signed up with Abbey House Vets and the difference with the quality of service was like comparing night and day. On taking Luna for her first visit to Cleckheaton I was treat with dignity and respect by the staff. The vet was also very understanding and concurred that Luna should have been successfully treated months ago! A further referral to the Morley branch for Dermatological tests was arranged and again, Luna was treat with great care and empathy. I am most impressed with the care that Abbey House Vets provide. Admitted they are not exactly cheap but the quality of service is certainly above what RH are providing these days. FWIW A friend in Dewsbury with a Maine Coon cat and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier has also moved from RH as she too has noticed the quality of service is far superior at Abbey House
