The 2026 Sports & Recreation report
Fitness and recreation is the category where the cost of customer disappointment compounds over months, not days. A gym member who feels misled about cancellation terms spends six months trying to leave, files a credit card dispute, leaves a 1★ review, and tells every running-club friend they have. That cost-of-churn structure shapes the 2026 ranking: the operators at the top are not always the lowest-priced or the most equipped — they are the ones whose members report frictionless joining, transparent billing, and easy cancellation when life circumstances change.
CrowdTrust's 2026 rankings weight reviews from membership cancellations, equipment failures, injury-related disputes, and contract renewals more heavily than reviews of routine class attendance. This reflects how members actually evaluate operators: the daily training experience matters, but loyalty and recommendation are determined by what happened when the member needed flexibility, refunds, or accommodation.
Across gyms, sports clubs, recreation centers, equipment brands, and outdoor operators, 2026 was defined by a continued shift away from long-term contracts toward month-to-month and class-pack models. Operators who eliminated initiation fees, cancellation penalties, and auto-renewal traps saw measurable rating gains. Operators who tightened those terms — or who maintained them while raising prices — lost ground in every sub-category we ranked.
