WARNING!! Do NOT rent an Electric Vehicle in Southern Italy. There is no infrastructure to support it. It doesn't function. Charging points are few and far between, and then you have to find one that is compatible with your vehicle and that the rental company have an account with. You can use up all the charge just trying to find a compatible charging point - in our case 50 km from our house - then wait 4 hours for the car to be (almost) fully charged.
When we booked the car 9/3/35 we chose the cheapest which happened to be an EV. There was no advice or warning about checking charging facilities in the area we were going to. We could have booked a petrol car at the time - for a little bit extra - but there were only two of us and we just needed a car, nothing special. We knew there was no EV charging point at our destination - as we were staying in our own house in the countryside - and have only 6KW power for the whole property. It should be safe to assume that if you rent a vehicle, it will be possible to refuel it, however the car is powered, particularly as the rental was for 15 days. We had no idea of the problems we would encounter until we arrived at Noleggiare rental desk. We were warned at that point that EV does not function in the South of Italy, that charging points are few and far between. She said we would find them on a map but she didn't give us a map showing where we could charge the vehicle. She said that as it was a/ difficult to find charging points, and b/ it takes 4 hours to charge the vehicle, we could pay an additional 40 Euros to avoid refuelling surcharges as we may have to bring the vehicle back empty. She said that we could change to a petrol car....at an additional cost of 170 Euros...on top of the £394.56 we had already paid up front. Staggeringly higher than if we had booked a petrol car in the first place, which would have been around £20 more. We also had to fight for the Free Additional Driver which was clearly stated on our booking confirmation. She told us that the car was in perfect condition but fortunately the mechanic corrected her as there were 6 points of damage which we might have been charged for on return of the car. We found 4 EnelX charging points around Ostuni. One was out of order. We had to scan a QR code and register, create an account to use them...but it wouldn't accept our details, UK or Italian. Fortunately, a supermarket 10km from our house had a promotion, 45 minutes free charging, but that only gave us 1/8th of a tank, and we used 20km of charge for each return trip. Had this not been available, we would have been stranded. Our house is 6km outside town and there is no mobile network reception. On day 3 of this, we drove to Noleggiare at Brindisi airport and by the time we arrived, we had only 14km charge left. We asked if we could use their EV point to charge the car, happy to pay for it, but they said it "wasn't for public use". They then told us - which would have been really helpful had they told us when we picked up the car - that we should use the EVWay fob on the keyring to charge the car at an EVWay charging point - as Noleggiare have an account with them. He found on a map on his mobile a compatible charging point at a shopping mall 10km away. We drove there and could not find it. We had 4km charge left in the car. We asked Information at the mall if they knew where the EVWay charging point was. They said there wasn't one. My husband managed to find a map of EVWay points on his mobile and we drove to it. It didn't say EVWay on it, it said Electrip. Fortunately, using the fob, we managed to charge the car...but we had to wait 4 hours to get 85% charge, then drive 50km back to our house. We lost around 2 days of our trip on this fiasco, time we needed to work on the house, run errands, see friends, have a couple of trips out. We honestly don't find this acceptable and would not want others to have this experience. It was very stressful. Which is why we feel that our warning and complaint is absolutely justified.
